Ground Zero, NYC. -Still Significant?
diablopilot replied to ACMESkydiver's topic in Speakers Corner
There is a small Tribute/Museum on across the street on the south side of the site. Free to visit, a $10 donation is suggested. They have boxes and boxes of Kleenex, you'll need some. Two things really set me off in there. One was a Red Cross worker's ID badge on a lanyard. The lanyard was covered with pins from around the world showing support, and the clip in the end was FULL of laminated photos of loved ones lost. The other thing was one handwritten letter on a huge wall of cards from friends and family of loved ones. The one handwritten letter that stuck out to me was in crayon, and from a young boy, I think about 7 or 8. It said something like "I miss you daddy, I hope you're having fun in heaven." I'm not religious, but I lost it there, and was starting to be embarrassed about bawling like a baby. That was till someone handed me a box of Kleenex, and I noticed there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Downstairs there is an exhibit where you can write your memories of the day down. I highly recommend a visit. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -

Every DZ I've worked for has had a different policy and they are changing from time to time. It's usually because of that one deadbeat that uses the same Freefly suit for six months and starts to bitch at the staff when someone else is using it. Then they start hiding their favorite demo helmet in the back of the gear room. You know the guy/girl who's got a 100 jumps but doesn't own an alti. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -

There is another thread around here that kinda sums up my feelings about the newer generation and state of AFF instruction in general. I know my AFF instructors took the time to cover WAY more than freefall. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

I willing to bet that you would be forgiven for creeping her out if you offered to rub your boobies against hers. In an effort to help you make the peace with Beth, tell me where I should send the baby oil. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

Same thing happened to me once on a road trip. Those Gatorade bottles mouths are too small. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

The British Parachute Association's magazine "Skydive the Mag" is pretty good for pictures. The articles are alright most of the time, though your likely to read about the giant party each DZ has as much as the skydiving they do, but that might have something to do with the weather. There's a German Mag, but I can't read it. I like the APF's newsletter myself, but no pictures.

Different ways of learning...
diablopilot replied to HillerMyLife's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
You know, that brings to mind a story. I had probably around 35 to 45 jumps and was eager to try every piece of demo gear that the shop had. So I rented the 150 Omega they had just recieved (about a 1.2 loading at the time, too much too soon but that's a different story) and packed it up. Just as I was going to manifest one of the DZO's, Dan O'Brien came up to me and asked what I was doing on this jump. I said "Not much." and he asked if I wanted to do a high altitude hop and pop, which I hadn't done before. I was excited! He got out the student radios and said let's plan something. So we did, basically a dive flow to get me comfortable with the canopy for the first half of the dive, and then follow him if I could for the second half. What fun, and I learned alot. I still think of that and hope instructors and DZO's are still taking the time to know what's happening around them and how to help people stay safe. -
Why should I buy new French links ? Soft links are better. I have 3 sets of hard links on 2 gears. I have no plan to change them. If I have to change them I'd go for soft links. I love Soft links, but to play devils advocate they have a problem that French links don't. They wear. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are.
