I won't speak to any specific threads or comments, but overall I'd say if someone called another poster a homophobe, it might be as a slightly more specific and polite alternative to calling them a bigot. I suspect most people who argue against gay marriage (how exactly did we get on this topic??) would object to being called either one, but then again how many bigots like that word? I didn't claim this is misinformation -- just that I GENERALLY suspect everything that I hear in the news. I'm a skeptic, not a dogmatic disbeliever. And I wouldn't say that I don't want to know -- I'm just not all keyed up to get reflexively excited about it. I don't spend my days worrying about them but I suppose I could find their plight interesting if I pondered it a lot. I doubt I'd identify much with them though. To be fair, I don't identify with the homosexuals in the gay bars across town either. First Class Citizen Twice Over

I'm not a conservativephobe. What I am is a hypocritophobe. I'm an idiotophobe. I'm a bigotophobe. Why has this conversation turned to my personality? First Class Citizen Twice Over

Since I don't live in those places, and since I believe the news that filters down to me is horribly twisted by people with axes to grind, I believe that I know next to nothing about the arab world. However, it's entirely possible you're right. If so, that really sucks for them. Why again did you bring up this non-sequitur? First Class Citizen Twice Over

This was in South River, Ontario, waaay out on the other side of Canada... It also happens about 1000 times per year in Canada. In Newfoundland there are even huge signs on the highway that say: "Number of cars destroyed by impact with moose so far this year: [XXX]". First Class Citizen Twice Over

I am 110% certain that if the political parties were switched in this situation, you'd switch your principled approval to vitriolic disapproval. Note: Of course I could post this in response to nearly every Speaker's Corner post. First Class Citizen Twice Over

Atheist, what do you think of Anthony Flew's change of mind?
narcimund replied to steveorino's topic in Speakers Corner
I have no idea who this guy is but I gather from context he used to preach atheism and now he's preaching non-atheism. It's always entertaining to watch loud people suddenly switch positions. It's a lot like when rabidly homophobic politicians or preachers get caught sucking off a prostitute. Or when a flaming queen goes negative. It makes one wonder what was fueling the original loud behavior. Overcompensating for some inner conflict? First Class Citizen Twice Over -
This sort of sophisticated and nuanced understanding of world affairs explains a lot about how america got where it is. First Class Citizen Twice Over

In the US (and those other minor little places like Canada, Europe, Central America, Australia, etc...) christians are 99% of the homophobia problem and muslims are the remainder. Does that answer your question why islam isn't "attacked" in the western world as much as christianity? Did I really let you goad me into using the word "attacked"??? *sigh*... The answer seems likely to be yes. After all, that's exactly what happened with every single other weapon ever developed. So why not this one? First Class Citizen Twice Over

I'm endlessly amused by people who rigidly preach the etymological origin of "homophobia" rather than the current, common usage. It's as if they think by proclaiming English speakers are incompetant, they can make everyone forget what they were talking about. "Lay off the haters of homosexuals! Your word is poorly constructed by historical standards so the whole notion you're referring to is off limits. Stop discussing the idea!" First Class Citizen Twice Over

Shall we all bet how long it takes for the inevitable response that it's hypocritical of non-christians to stop christians from destroying cultures -- when it's central to the christian culture to do so! First Class Citizen Twice Over

Transporting rig on motorcycle?
narcimund replied to floridadiver81's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
There's a very easy solution to the problem of leaving safety pins on during a jump. Pilots have had this problem for 100 years and they've solved it perfectly. Every safety storage device on an airplane has a large red flag marked "Remove before flight". The extra pin on a rig shouldn't be just a pin. It should be a pin attached to a long red streamer. Make it huge! Make it glow in the dark. Make that streamer sing loudly. Make it blink! Make it twice as long as the rig itself. Nobody will miss it. Trust me. The problem with base jumpers leaving rubber band and pullup cords on PCs is they don't have big red flags on the safety devices. That's all there is to it. First Class Citizen Twice Over -

I'm not sure what I think about this sprinting approach. The first reading is usually spread out over weeks or months. I wonder how this will turn out. By the way, as long as you're so deep into it, I'm of the very firm opinion that the science fictiony bit should be firmly ignored. Nobody cares about the fabulous motor or Project X. They're simply symbolic of innovation for good or for bad. First Class Citizen Twice Over

The more the power is concentrated in individuals (and the american model is doing that more and more as the years go on,) the more the people are at risk of intentional evil. The less the power is concentrated in inviduals, the more the public is at risk of mediocrity and the dictatorship of the majority. But in neither case does it do any good to "consider something else." You're at the mercy of large, unstoppable forces. If you don't like it, move. If you can't find anywhere worth moving, just lay low and try to live such that they don't stomp on you too much. Good luck. First Class Citizen Twice Over

Actually, that's EXACTLY how the american system works. Parlimentary systems work differently. Perhaps you wish the american system was parlimentary. First Class Citizen Twice Over

I've read it probably 5 times over the years, introduced it to a dozen people, and probably spent a cumulative full week discussing it. It's generally considered the second most influential book in american history. Unfortunately recent converts sometimes lose their humanity for a while until they realize the MEANING of her philosophy can be achieved without becoming inhuman in the STYLE of her characters. In the same way, people who hate the style of her characters discount the philosophy. Both are flaws and both weaken the reader. I caution you not to fall for either trap. What is your favorite alcoholic drink? Or top 3?
narcimund replied to normiss's topic in The Bonfire
Criminal's that's just wrong needs @ least 5-6oz Bar booze in British Columbia IS criminal. It's astounding how it works. * No free pour -- every drop must be measured * 1.0 ounce shots -- not 1.5 or 2.0 like everywhere else * No fire -- try making a spanish coffee without fire! * No more than 3.0 ounces of booze per drink -- EVER! * And the prices? Ooooey! Yes, the Long Island Ice Tea has 1.0 ounces. That's 0.2 ounces each of rum, vodka, gin, triple sec, and tequila, a squeeze of lemon, and a glassful of coke. It's revolting and pointless I tell you! First Class Citizen Twice Over -
