A mark for threads we've posted in
narcimund replied to narcimund's topic in Suggestions and Feedback
Sangiro, Here's an alternative that doesn't require much db change at all: Watched threads currently send an email. They could instead leave a visible mark on the browser. For instance, the little paper symbol could be modified to show "You've marked this thread". A new color? A bug? Something akin to the flames. It could be a user preference whether watched threads trigger emails, visual signals, or both. (I believe that would require a db change, but it would be the only one.) Ouch! I had 200 jumps, including 6 demos, a 4-stack, a 10 point 4-way, a night jump, an emergency exit at 1800', 30 round jumps, two reserve rides, and a cutaway before I ever applied for a USPA certificate. First Class Citizen Twice Over

Cross-posted from another thread: I don't think anyone's mentioned it, but Drew has been back out at the dropzone recently. He was at Eugene Skydivers last Saturday. He says he's been healing far faster than the doctors expected. He attributes that to having been in really good shape before the accident. He's now up and walking, although with a cast on one leg. His scars are horrific, but his body is back together enough that he looks like good old Drew. I'm glad to report that his spirits are high, he's enthusiastic about jumping again in a few more months, and it's a pleasure to see a strong will overcome adversity. If only more people had a fraction of the strength Drew is showing, they'd live their lives instead of seeking out pity. Good going, Drew. I admire you. First Class Citizen Twice Over

I'm reminded of a news photo from last winter. It showed a little Afgan girl at an airport presenting a bouquet of flowers to her heroic American saviors as they arrived in her country. Oddly the bouquet of flowers was wrapped in clear cellophane and tied with a pretty mass produced bow. Obviously brought by the Americans from an American flower shop. Just one more sincere moment brought to you by the image producers behind most American perceptions of the world. First Class Citizen Twice Over

One of my clients has 4 of these Pinzgauers. In fact, he used to be the head of the Red Bull marketing. You can see his website dedicated to this vehicle at http://www.pinzgauerus.com First Class Citizen Twice Over

Narcimund: Contraction of "Narcissus and Goldmund", a novel by Hermann Hesse. The two characters are polar opposites but very close friends. Narcissus is (in the novel) an abbot, strong in leadership, scholarship, and given to accepting responsibility at the expense of his own personal experiences. Goldmund is his student given to impulsiveness, sensuality, wanderlust, and very personal satisfactions. Many years ago I read the novel and identified strongly with one character, but though I'd be a better man if I had the benefits of both. So I chose a joined name to remind me not to be just one at the expense of the other. First Class Citizen Twice Over

Oh lord, here we go. Now it's getting complicated again. What is block time? Is that somehow "shared" with strangers? Do I pay $600/hour then stand around idle for 12 minutes out of every 15 watching other people fly? What kind of ridiculous, complex hidden pricing structure is this? Why can't someone give me a clear answer that doesn't have crazy conditions and tangled jargon? Is this like hotels that advertise "$50/night" in great big letters then in tiny print say "per person based on double occupancy"? I.e, the room costs $100 but they try to trick you into believing it's less. Screw this shared time/per minute/block time nonsense. I give up on wind tunnels. Skydiving is easy to understand: $16 for a ticket to 13,000 feet. Buy your ticket, ride the plane, get out, have fun. That's the kind of thing my simple mind can understand. Now THIS is what I was hoping for. Simple "dollars per minute." Thank you! I don't understand WHY these things need to be so complicated. The only thing I can think of is when companies make things unnecessarily obscure, they're trying to hide something. Skyventure will get my business just for being straightforward. This is what I'm talking about. It's so ridiculously complex. I get spam emails about pyramid schemes less convoluted than this. This isn't a consumer pricing model, it's an S.A.T. logic problem. First Class Citizen Twice Over

advice needed - skydiving and relationships - how do you manage both??
narcimund replied to Newbie's topic in The Bonfire
My very close relationship of 3 1/2 years is 1000 times more important to me than skydiving. I consider it nothing more than a pleasant bonus that he likes to skydive with me! I would give up any entertainment or activity for the right relationship if it was necessary. On the other hand however, any partner who took it on themself to regulate my hobbies wouldn't be the right relationship. First Class Citizen Twice Over -
I'm not clear on why you'd end up in jail. If you had a rig and no experience and a friend with a plane and a farm, what's stopping you from jumping? I don't have my FAR AIM handy, but I know the FAA expects you to notify them before a jump, carry two approved parachutes, and avoid congested areas. Aside from that I don't think anyone cares. We missed the freedom jam, too. I have an excuse though. I biffed my tailbone a couple of weeks ago under a downwind reserve ride. I'm finally better and I'm going jumping this next weekend again! :) We'll be in SF from Sept 7th - 11th for a conference. It's not the vacation we hoped for, but hey! You take what you can get. I cook big dinners at least a couple or three times per week. My boyfriend and I have dinner parties at least two or three times per month. Today I spent five hours smoking chickens in sugar maple and grave vine smoke for us and another couple (a baptist preacher and his wife.) A few weeks ago I bbq'd (real bbq -- not grilled!) ten pounds of wild boar spare ribs for a big summer picnic. I'd rather spend an evening cooking up something innovative and original than just about anything else. Sometimes it's elegant, sometimes primal. But it's always fresh, honest food made from ingredients. You won't find any canned, boxed, or frozen food substitutes in our house. Sometimes it's a challenge to find enough people to eat it all, but nobody we invite ever complains and nobody who's been here once refuses a second invite! First Class Citizen Twice Over -
I totally agree! I seriously doubt anyone wants to know how much sex I have, and if anyone did then that's probably exactly who I wouldn't want to tell. But it's fun to think about the fact that this weekend I went to two county fairs and ate two corn dogs, drank two bottles of champagne with my lover last night, and had two other couples over for two dinners I cooked. Today I smoked two chickens in two different wood smokes (sugar maple and grape vine) and served two wines and also two sorbets for dessert. Numbers can be fun. First Class Citizen Twice Over
