That's pretty cool. If the state allows one religion to place a monument, how can it deny a different one the same right? We had something of a "kerfuffle" a few years ago here in Wisconsin. The state allowed a variety of different religions to place "holiday" displays in the Capitol Rotunda during the Christmas season. But when the Freedom From Religion group decided to place a banner reading "Church and State - Keep them separate", the Governor decided it looked too much like a "Hockey Rink" (his words) and made them take it down. So, of course, it went to court and the FFR group won. They've had their banner up every year since. And this year, there's a Festivus Pole. The "Airing of the Grievances" is scheduled for the 23rd. http://www.nbc15.com/news/headlines/Wisconsin-Capitol-gets-Festivus-pole-for-holidays-234985371.html "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." It's called "meteorology", the science of predicting weather. Where are you? You might fill out your profile. Most places have reasonably predictable weather patterns. Learning your local patterns and how to predict the weather is a reasonably straightforward process. Depending on where you are, the easiest way to predict the weather is to know which way it usually moves and look that way to see what's happening. I'm in Wisconsin, and most weather here moves west to east. If I want to know what the clouds are going to be like in a couple hours, I look at an overall map to see what's happening (fronts and airmasses), how it's moving (normally or not) and how fast. There's a few other ways, like looking at the temp/dewpoint spread (in the METARS) and using that to guess cloud heights, comparing that guess to the actual reports to get an idea of the temp gradient, that sort of thing. It's a science, not magic. Some research on the web might help, but your best bet is to talk to the pilot at the DZ... On one of those crappy weather days when everyone is standing around. At my DZ, if the weather is iffy, someone has the satellite or radar pic up on a laptop or tablet, or is bouncing around the sites getting an idea of what's going on in the area. That's a perfect time to ask questions like: "What are you seeing?" "What are you looking for?" "How is it going to move?" "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Really? Are you aware of the atrocities committed against the Tories and Loyalists? There were atrocities committed by both sides, neither was blame free. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo -

And what I replied to her: "Have fun. If he was still alive and showed up at my front door he'd be leaving in a body bag anyway. ;-) " Girls with dirty minds. You dirty girls do know that they make rechargable batteries nowadays, right? 2 sets and a charger and you're good to go for a very long time. Well, I'm guessing they were stealing it to sell. As a "Celebrity Death Souvenir" it has some attraction, but even as a "Car Part", the roof panel from that car is a $10,000 part (yes, ten thousand). OTOH, I have little problem with his friends keeping a momento. A piece of the car or something like that. The piece of mulch is a little creepy, but not too far out. I have an empty cartridge case from the "21 gun salute" that was fired at a close friend's funeral. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." well, in the "Sick people profiteering off of tragedy" department, 2 guys stole the roof panel from the car (took it off the flatbed it was being hauled away on), and another was trying to sell bark from the charred tree on E-Bay. More of the crap about "The Scary Government is Buying All the Bullets"? Please. Really. Here's a little fact for you. ONE nuke plant here in Wisconsin goes through 250,000 rounds of .223 (AR-15/M-16) each year. Plus pistol ammo. How many nuke plants are there in the US? It's not too hard to burn through incredible amounts of ammunition when you are training all the extra LEO that are now working. Most of those new LEO were put in place under... (wait for it) GW Bush. And most calibers are back on the shelves. The only thing that's still hard to find is .22LR. That's been one of the hardest to find all summer long. It's going for two to three times normal price through the resellers. A lot of stores aren't jacking prices up, and it is gone from the shelves the instant it's put out. What government agency uses large quantities of .22? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

Unarmed Man Is Charged With Wounding Bystanders Shot by Police
wolfriverjoe replied to ryoder's topic in Speakers Corner
I agree that cops often have to make very sudden life-or-death decisions just like this. And if they guy was reaching for a gun, for the cop to wait until he actually saw the gun coming out of the pocket would be too late to adequately defend himself. That's why I don't completely disagree with it either. There have been numerous cases where a cop shot an unarmed person who made a move that was misinterpreted as a threat. There have been cases where the cop didn't shoot, some where there was no threat, others where there was. And some of the cops that were holding fire in the face of real threats died. That is the nature of the job. And I would guess that just about anybody, including cops, would be pretty jacked up on adrenaline under these circumstances. Its an instinctive reaction that is very hard to stop. The fact that this particular cop opened fire with civilians in the background pretty much rules out "In complete control and making a very clear and rational decision" And I agree that if a cop is pointing a gun at you, telling you to stand still, it's a pretty good idea to do that. Argue right or wrong, legal or illegal, all that crap later. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Wind direction during deployment
wolfriverjoe replied to SansSuit's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Yeah... Seriously, unless there is a very strong wind shear, right at or before opening (8 sec ~ 1500ft) there will be zero horizontal component to the relative wind (unless induced by the jumper through tracking or similar). Unarmed Man Is Charged With Wounding Bystanders Shot by Police
wolfriverjoe replied to ryoder's topic in Speakers Corner
Felony Murder is still around. It was originally intended to place responsibility on peripheral participants. For example, if a victim was killed during a bank robbery, the driver of the getaway car, not even in the building, could be held responsible for the death. Conspiracy or accessory either weren't strong enough charges or were being defeated because the peripheral participants would claim that the original plan was that no one would get hurt. It's been expanded to include the death of perpetrators, and that's cool too. You go into a crime threatening to kill someone, don't be surprised to face murder charges. In this particular case, the police shot the dude because he "reached into his pants." I don't completely agree with it, but I'm not surprised by it. If you get a nervous cop pointing a gun at a suspect, don't be too shocked when the suspect gets shot for making a sudden move that can be perceived as threatening. The cop shooting without paying attention to the background (make sure of your target and what's beyond) needs to go back to basic gun safety training. But that's true of a lot of cops. 2nd Jump (AFF) - Hard Opening?
wolfriverjoe replied to corpkid's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Because when you throw a folded up bunch of nylon into the air at 120 mph, it gets a little chaotic. Some things can't be completely controlled. Proper maintenance, correct packing, correct body position and a forgiving canopy all help mitigate hard openings. But any canopy can spank you at any time. Nothing is guaranteed. Mike "Sparky" Owens has been quoted: "You can do everything right and still die in this sport." "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Vector micron w/ pulse 170 for a first rig?? Yes or no?
wolfriverjoe replied to Spiffycop's topic in Gear and Rigging
What is your exit weight? If your stated "160 lbs" is "stepping out of the shower" weight, then your "street clothes" weight will be a bit over that and exit weight (how much you weigh with all your gear on) will be well above it. Probably 185-195. Which would put you at ~1.:15 W/L. I would think that would be a bit much. If you look in "Swooping & Canopy Control", there's a sticky that is Brian Germain's W/L chart. It's a good read. There's nothing wrong with a Micron for a first rig, other than that it won't fit a big enough canopy. And search "Rigger as Escrow" for the suggested purchase procedure. Short version: Seller ships it to an agreed upon 3rd party for inspection. Inspector ok's it. You send money to seller Seller tells inspector to release rig to you. Scammers won't agree to this because it's impossible to scam. Some of the smaller dealers won't either, but they usually have a good reputation. If you are concerned about a scam (and a rig like that for that low of a price does raise some red flags), post a link to the ad and get some opinions. I'm constantly amazed at the utter absurdity of the shit you buy into. How many time-shares do you own? I stopped being amazed by the gullibility of people. Not just on here, but everywhere. The absurd crap some people believe (mainly because it supports their agenda) is hilarious. Ridiculous. But not amazing. I get the "Snopes isn't always right" garbage too. In this particular case, the first couple lines of the page are what stick out to me. P.T. Barnum was right. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." General rule is height minus inseam minus 20" So I come up with a 21 for you (6'6"-37-20) If you have a freakishly long neck or big head it might be different. Again, you can take your measurements according to the manufacturers procedure and ask them. That would give you the most accurate answer.
