Not to highjack the thread, but is there a handy gadget or program that you know of that makes the process easier? I have a bunch of albums I'd like to throw away because they take up so much room. Are you asking how to back them up? Or how to digitize albums full of printed pics? You can scan the pics one by one through a good scanner. It takes a pretty good scanner to make a good copy though. It also takes time. The easiest way I've come across (not my idea) is to get a reasonably good camera with a decent lens and just take digital pics of the prints. Set the camera for the highest resolution, zoom to make the print fill the viewfinder and take the pic. You want a location with good, strong, "clean" light. A room with strong sunlight is good. Artificial lighting (especially flourescents) not so much. It helps to have a tripod that you can mount the camera on and point it straight down. You'd be surprised how well they turn out. Children's Hospital. Best place in the world for them. They can be safely sterilized and then used to comfort kids who are seriously in need of it. ^This. How many times is the B/F-Husband the "last to know." And as Lucky noted, my real friends would want me to know that I'm being cheated on. I don't know if I'd give the girl the first chance to tell him or not. It's a huge 'can of worms.' But if I did, I'd seriously cover my own ass with a voice recording of that conversation. Indeed. As well as the fact the asshole has a history of abusing and injuring the stuntmen who has the misfortune of working with him. Don't forget about the mob connections. http://articles.latimes.com/2003/feb/08/nation/na-seagal8 "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Well, a study sample of one is hardly conclusive. Self-studies even less so. You may be an anomaly. I agree that there were a lot of biased studies put out by the "Anti" crowd. That's why I didn't link any of them. The Wiki link was the easiest to find. But there are a lot of unbiased studies that show pot use reduces capabilities and that it lasts for more than just the time that the user "feels high." Can you cite one that shows any different? Not just that use builds tolerance. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

Strange conclusion. Learn to read. None of the volcanic eruptions in the Wiki link (Pinatubo, Krakatoa, ect) could be considered either "small" or for only a "couple of days." Can you back that up at all? A quick search showed that there are measurable cognitive effects (negative effects) for some time after smoking. It depends on the amount and frequency, but it most definitely affects the user the next day, and longer (up to 28 days) for heavy or frequent use. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effects_of_cannabis There are other results out there, the wiki link was the easiest to find, and it has citations for the studies. Bingo. Evasive and incomplete answers to direct questions. And complaints about being picked on. That hasn't changed That is enough answer for me. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

^This. It will most likely be a repeat of the mid-90s, when the "Government" was just a collection of warlords, who spent most of their time fighting each other. As in actually waging war against each other. Including shelling parts of Kabul. Imagine Ted Cruz using the Texas Air National Guard to bomb Nevada because he was pissed at Harry Reid. That's what Afghanistan was like after the Soviets left. That's what made the Taliban attractive. As reprehensible as they were, they were better than what they replaced. Easy - How many degrees above or below standard times how many days. It's used to calculate heating and cooling needs. For example, if it's 20 degrees above the standard for one day, that's "20 Degree Days." Or, if it's 5 degree above for 4 days, that's also "20 Degree Days." The theory is that you'd need the same amount of A/C use over both time periods. A lot on the "hot" day; less each of the "not so hot" days, but still the same total amount for the 4 days. It actually works over longer periods of time and bigger temp swings. The local fuel oil companies use it to figure out how often to come and fill the heating oil tanks. They know if it's been really cold, they need to come sooner. If it hasn't been cold, then they don't need to come as soon. The "Degree Days" allows them to calculate it. They figure out each customer's "Gallons per Degree Day" based on past usage, and then only come out as often as needed. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Maybe. Or maybe he still doesn't understand how some of us feel about his behavior. I think we all hate seeing someone come on here and pretend to be an expert, offering bad advice, potentially getting someone hurt. I'd like to think he didn't understand how that could happen. This sport is one of a very few where bad advice is: A - Hard to spot for rookies B - Potentially fatal if followed As DaveLepka pointed out, "This isn't an X-box or Chevy Truck forum." And I'd hope that his new attitude is real, not just "playing nice" to get back in our good graces. But I don't know. If he has any real desire to be part of this community, then he needs (IMHO) to be open and honest from here on in. He needs to stop giving advice about stuff he knows nothing about (including FAA medicals) and learn. He might become welcome here, in our weird little on line community. Or maybe not. My point was that he was asked about his credentials. He never answered. He was "outed" as a newbie. He sort of admitted it, but not fully. He was "outed" as a B License holder. He hasn't commented on that, as far as I've seen. If he is sincere about wanting to be a part of us, then I would like to know from him what the truth is. And I'm rather curious to see what, if any, response this gets. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Didn't you get the message in the open forums? People were asking you to tone down your vitriol for some time and you responded "Its just the internet." In case you didn't notice, most people on here are reasonably polite, at least in the serious discussions. You were asked repeatedly for your jump numbers, licenses held and home DZ. You chose to ignore those requests. I still haven't seen you admit your jump numbers, just that you don't have a lot of experience because of financial constraints. And I've seen some speculation that ranges from a couple student jumps a long time ago and a recent tandem to a B license. So I will ask AGAIN: WHAT IS YOUR LICENCE LEVEL? HOW MANY JUMPS HAVE YOU MADE? WHERE DO YOU (DID YOU) JUMP? If you want to redeem yourself at all (at least in my eyes), answer the questions. And given what I said above: What good would a PM have done? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." He may be trying, but he isn't being very successful. He's asked to be shown where he was wrong in his facts (acting surprised when it's pointed out that he was shown this before). He also isn't changing anything of his own volition. The only reason he's changing is because he was clearly outed as a newbie. Not just ignorant of the facts, not an "anonymous jumper & instructor" but a 1 jump wonder. He was given a bunch of chances to tone down his attitude, shorten up his posts and stop pretending to be an expert. He didn't do any of that until he had to. I think he's worn out his welcome here and any changes he shows are too little and too late. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Well, the next time they ask when you are coming back, or why you haven't come back in a long time, you have your answer. "I'm not spending that much money or that much time to be treated like shit." older but cheaper rig or a newer but more expensive rig??
wolfriverjoe replied to Spiffycop's topic in Gear and Rigging
Is that weight a "stepping out of the shower" weight? Or a "Street weight"? (street clothes and shoes) Or an exit weight? Exit weight is what you weigh with all your gear on. As in "stepping on the plane" weight. That's what wingloading is based on. I go 155-160 "stepping out of the shower." And around 190 exit weight. That would put you around 1.15:1 under a 170 and around 1.2:1 under that 160 reserve. Your instructors may think that's ok, but Brian Germain's W/L chart disagrees. Something to think about. Fair enough. Too many "keyboard cowboys" think that pulling out a gun would have helped in that situation. Some seem to think that because you can "stand your ground" that you should. Running away, when possible, should always be at the top of the decision tree. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." It comes with a cable, looped on both ends with a swaged connector. The nanovault has a cutout in the side that locks the cable in place, and you loop it on itself around something reasonably strong. The seat mount works. I agree with Beowolf that it is better than the glove box, but not by a whole lot. It's just sheet steel. What it does is prevent a car prowler from simply grabbing it and running away. Most of them get in, grab what is available, and take off. They usually don't want to spend much time getting into a lock box (at least that's the theory). I've seen fairly serious "Car Safes," usually 1/8 or 3/16 steel welded up with a real hasp. Those get bolted down (bolt heads are inside the safe) and a "No Shit" padlock. But again, it just makes it harder, not impossible. It hopefully makes the thief look elsewhere for an easier target. And Regulator - Just out of curiosity, how would you have acted in your "Car Wreck" situation if you had been armed? Read Winsor's post (#22) and tell me what good a gun would have done in that parking lot. More importantly, what would you have done with one? I don't know your state rules on permits and what training is required, but I very strongly suggest that you get some decent training. Not so much on the "gun" stuff, but on the legalities of use of lethal force. When you can and cannot use it (or even the threat of it). And especially the legal aftermath of a DGU. Different places include more or less for their "AFF Packages." There's some variation, but usually not a whole lot of cost difference, especially in the same region. Some are just the First Jump Course and the actual first jump, others include more than one jump, it can be hard to make a direct comparison sometimes. Elsinore is a well known DZ with a good reputation. In that area, Perris Valley is also a good place. Beware that some DZ websites are for places that don't actually exist. There's a scam that makes sites for just about every city in the US and then sells gift certificates that you may have to travel several hours to redeem. If they try to sell you a gift certificate, ask where they are located, and be very careful buying anything over the phone or online. If you find a place that you aren't sure of, post a link to the site on here. There are a few people who know these scamners fairly well and will be more than happy to help you steer clear of them. Again, Elsinore is a very real place and you will not go wrong with them. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit."
