That was a decision made by the Iowa courts! Blind Liberty. Sounds like a good action movie. Too late. Blind Fury And, on a serious note, "legally blind" is simply a definition. It's a level of vision that is the legal threshold. Legally blind people can get driver's licenses in many states. And have been able to for a long time. Where's the outcry on that? Sure about it? No. And I agree that most places, even "up north' run for longer than 120 days, so a single repack back then wouldn't (legally) last the season. But it's something that can possibly account for the low number of repacks. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." It kinda depends. Keep in mind that some DZs (especially "up north") only operate part of the year. For a DZ that opens on Memorial Day and closes on Labor day, one repack would get through that season, even under the old 120 day rule. Since the 180 day rule went into effect, I've had only one repack per season most years on my own rig. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Help!-WW2 bailout question
wolfriverjoe replied to tmac1397's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Yes. It's possible for two jumpers who "exited" at the same time to end up that far apart. In general, if the two aircrew had deployed at different altitudes, they would have been under canopy for different times and drifted different distances. I don't know a whole lot about how they were trained, but my understanding (and I welcome correction if I'm wrong) was that they pulled fairly quickly after exit. If one crew had his container clipped to the harness before exiting and pulled right away, he could have opened quite high. If the other went out with it not clipped on, and had to get it attached properly before opening, he could have opened a lot lower. If one was more afraid of the opening (openings with the bailout rigs can be brutal, especially at terminal freefall speeds) than any enemy fighters in the sky, he could have opened higher. If the other was afraid of getting shot by the enemy, he might have delayed opening and opened lower. There are other scenarios that would have resulted in one crew member opening significantly higher than the other. A 3 minute difference in time under canopy with an average wind of 20 mph would give a mile of landing separation. Hope this helps, good luck in your search. I've seen a meme on FB that the Secret Service is going to address their budget shortfalls by using "thoughts and prayers" to protect their charges rather than actual agents. Sounds good to me. Not really. My point is that there was that database. And it was completely useless. As Phil111 noted, there was no way to use it to identify a gun. There's no way to identify a case found at a crime scene with one in the database other than to look at each and every one. In theory, if the cops had a suspect who had a gun in the database, they could go in and compare, but in reality that never happened. Fingerprints, OTOH, have a classification process where each characteristic is given a number. That allows potential matches to be identified, with a fairly small number that have to be actually examined. And it's not terribly difficult to alter a gun without telling anyone. First off, bolts, barrels, firing pins, ect aren't serial numbered. They are totally unregulated as "parts". Unless you intend to extend registration and recorded transfers down to that level of parts, it would be impossible to track. Also, a simple file or screwdriver can easily be used to alter the bolt face, firing pin or even the rifling in a barrel. There was a case where a little .25 was used in a crime. The gun was given or sold and the recipient was informed that it had been used (and fired) in a crime. He took a screwdriver and scuffed up the rifling with it. The gun was later test fired, with the bullet compared to the crime scene bullet and it didn't match. I don't have a link on this, IIRC it was an episode of Forensic Files on TV. That happened in Maryland. Millions of dollars spent. Zero crimes solved. None. And how would that affect 'mass shootings'? I asked that before. How would any of these proposals have thwarted any of the recent shootings? Possibly, Roof in Charleston, had the background check been done properly. But all of the others involved guns that were legally purchased, with a background check. I don't think that even the "mental health" background check would have prevented any of the shooters from passing the checks (could be wrong on that, I didn't research it). They were all "ordinary people" to the legal system. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

Just out of curiosity, which of these would have prevented any of the recent mass shootings? Would the background check that was part of the "License the Person" be adequate for purchase? Or would it need to be done a second time. In some states, having a carry permit satisfies the 'background check' for purchase and a second one isn't required. Also, the idea of "Mental background check" has lots of issues. Involuntary commitment to a mental institution (called a "72 hour hold" here in WI) only takes a cop and a doctor to agree to it. Denying a right based on that level of "conviction" (or lack of it) is problematic. It's really easy to say 'dangerous mental condition', but defining it and quantifying it (how dangerous is "too dangerous"?) is a lot more difficult. School locker searches OTOH are not a problem. There have been a few court rulings that the locker is the property of the school, and searches (with or without probable cause) are fine. Wisconsin isn't the "heartland"? And the act of protest in burning the flag isn't "Free Speech"? I don't agree with the Professor Gowlerk on a lot of things, but you seem to want free speech to mean "I can say what I want, but I don't want you to say things I don't like". Which isn't how it works. Edit: Oops. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

Well, I do believe he's a Canadian truck driver who comes to America to deliver his freight. It's a bit complicated, and somewhat obscure, but that "progressive, liberal" idea of free trade got us NAFTA, which allows for reasonably easy and free trade across the border. Canada is the US's 2nd largest trade partner and the largest consumer of US exports. Part of the NAFTA agreement is that drivers from each country can deliver and pick up freight in the other country. But not transport within the other country. So he can bring Canadian freight into the US and deliver it, and then pick up freight in the US to take back into Canada. I drive truck as a US citizen and can do the same thing in reverse. My routing has changed and I haven't been "up north" in a couple years, but it was always interesting and somewhat fun to go into Canada. Seeing different people, a (slightly) different culture, beautiful scenery and pretty good coffee were all educational and informative. Being exposed to different experiences can be eye opening, if one is open minded enough to appreciate it. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Left wing bigotry and xenophobia... wtf??
wolfriverjoe replied to Justincblount's topic in Speakers Corner
Well, first off, who is this? I've never heard of them before. Did a quick search and found a fairly obscure group. And there's always been 'this type of crap' from all sides. Liberals have had Alternet, Common Dreams and a host of others. Conservatives have Breitbart, InfoWars, Fox News and a host of others. To judge an entire political spectrum (any group for that matter) based on one group is pretty foolish. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." There is a difference between Mass Shootings and Gun Crime
wolfriverjoe replied to DJL's topic in Speakers Corner
Most people have no clue of the difference between a semi auto AR-15 and a select fire M-16. A couple years ago, during the "open carry of rifles" idiocy, there were a couple guys who walked towards the farmer's market with AR-15s over their shoulders. Numerous calls to the cops were made, most claimed 'two guys with machine guns' were walking down the street. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Well, compared to pistol rounds, any centerfire rifle round is "high powered", and yes, the wounds are far more serious. There are some rather dramatic effects that are created by the higher velocity of rifle bullets (pistols go somewhere between 900 and 1300 fps vs rifles well over 2000 fps). It's the physics where energy is a function of the square of velocity. There's also the fact that very few civilian "bulletproof" vests will stop a rifle round. Again, the velocity gives the energy to penetrate them. It just seems like those who are in favor of more gun control choose to over dramatize their statements by calling them "high powered" or "high caliber" rifles when they really aren't. And for all practical purposes, .223 and 5.56 are the same round. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Right. You proclaim your 'righteousness' because of your faith. You proclaim you are 'saved' because of your relationship with Jesus, yet in your social and political values you completely ignore all of that. You seem to think that how you act in church and in regard to your faith can be completely different from how you treat others and how you act out in the 'real world'. A good example is the fella that showed up in your church a couple weeks (?) back. The one you though had 'been on the road a while.' You 'interrogated' him, snitched him out to a retired LEO and stood out of his direct line of sight, watching him. Most likely with your hand very close to a gun the entire time. While a certain level of caution is reasonable, did you ever ask if he was hungry? Did you ask if he had had a chance to bathe recently? If he had a place to rest? Did you offer him any of these things? Or did you just make it clear he wasn't welcome in your 'enclave' while telling him "welcome to our church'? It's called being a hypocrite. You said a number of posts back that you weren't a 'gun guy' and were going to get some details wrong (paraphrased). One common misconception is that these 'assault rifles' are 'high powered'. They aren't. Not at all. They actually shoot a very low powered (for a rifle) round. Part of the reason is that the recoil is far less on, say a .223/5.56 that on a .308/7.62x51. This allows faster follow-up shots and more controllable full auto (for the real military rifles). One other reason is that the smaller cartridge allows a soldier to carry a lot more ammunition at the same weight penalty. Something like 2:1 or so. They also really aren't "high velocity" rounds either. Some loads push 3000 fps out of the longer barrels, which isn't slow by any means, but really high velocity stuff is well in excess of 3500 fps This isn't to argue that they aren't effective rounds, or that they do a lot of damage, especially at closer ranges. But the 223 has long been derided as a "mouse gun" caliber. It has been widely criticized for it's lack of penetration. Things that are decent 'cover' from 223 will easily be penetrated by a 308. Cover meaning stuff you can hide behind that will stop the bullet. Things like brick walls and trees provide cover from a 223, but not a 308. And even a 308 really isn't "high powered" either. Hunters going after dangerous game (particularly African game) use real high powered rifles. Usually .375 or bigger. Stuff like .300 WinMag, .338 Lapua Mag, and the .400+ stuff (.458 WinMag, .416 Rigby, and some of the proprietary stuff) is seriously high powered. They also have the noise and recoil levels that accompany that much power. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Stolen Gear: Farmers Branch, TX

The last shipment of canopies that I received from PD had, in the largest letters on the shipping document, 'Signature Required.'* FedEx just left it on my front porch. * This may not be the absolutely correct, perfect wording on the shipping document, but I think you and others get the idea. Jerry Baumchen Hi Jerry, You aren't the only one to experience that. I've had the same thing happen with UPS. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." My fear was that a communist trained socialist and community organizer would become POTUS. And, they came to fruition. Please tell me this wasn't in the video. If you have to "compensate" for the rings ovalling, then you need new rings. This goes back a long time (before my time) where there was a batch of soft rings. They would pull to oval under stress and lock up the 3 ring. Oval rings won't flip through. People would check for oval rings by rotating them. This was caught and fixed and hasn't been a problem in a long, long time. OTOH, making sure the 3 ring releases properly by pulling the handle and checking it occasionally is recommended by the manufacturers. Well, first off, Obama never "removed the National Prayer Breakfast." Pure and unadulterated bullshit promoted by those who hate him. He treated other religions with tolerance and respect. We can't have that And don't forget that Obama was President when the Supreme Court ruled that gay marriage was legal. And Obama appointed two of the sitting justices that were part of that decision. So gay marriage is all Obama's fault. And of course, Trump admitted on tape that he committed the crime of sexual assault. He's also had multiple credible accusations of it. And was facing a lawsuit by an underage girl (criminal charges were not an option due to the statute of limitations). "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Do you mean actually Funks (before he got banned)? Or all the "hot chicks" he pretended to be? His actual presence is before my time, but I've seen a few of his "hot chick" sockpuppets. There is no way of knowing that one way or the other. Stating that we clearly know they didn't is just as wrong as stating we know they did. If the Russians were able to mobilize people to protest, which we know they have successfully done, it isn't too far-fetched to assume they have changed a mind here or there. Whether they changed enough minds to affect the outcome of the election is impossible to ascertain. We do know they very much focussed on swing-States. There's also the very simple fact that it doesn't matter whether or not their actions affected the outcome (although it's almost a certainty that they were one of many factors). The actions of the Russians, the subterfuge, the fabrications and falsehoods, what they did and how they did it, were illegal. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." He left the police force while he was still active here. My understanding was that, as part of his job as a cop, he became a qualified 'accident re-constructor', that is, someone who does all the calculations and re-creations to determine exactly what happened with the vehicles involved in an accident. Heavy duty physics. As he became more and more involved in that part of his job, he started doing it on a wider scale as a consultant. And reached the point where he could do it full time. He was writing "zombie apocalypse" fiction at the time. Also he was an accomplished photographer. Good to see that he is continuing with those. You maybe. Everyone else, not so much. The way Obama's statements were blown out of proportion (or outright fabricated) compared to stuff Trump has actually said and done is ridiculous.
