  1. That's precisely what it means. Committing assault requires only to threaten harm. One can also be convicted of assault for threatening to punch someone. It doesn't imply they actually used their fist (which would be a different crime). Well, often the news reports on an armed robbery say something to the effect of "The suspect used a gun, but no shots were fired and no one was injured." One can 'use' a gun to threaten or intimidate someone. It's a far more effective tactic than using a finger. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 2. Unless they're playing the Patriots. That doesn't mean you don't hate the Cowboys. You just hate them both. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  3. Are you saying the guns are used as blunt instruments in ~90% DGUs, or are you saying the guns were not actually used (thus not a DGU). I'm saying the guns were not fired. That doesn't mean it wasn't used. In most places, simply pointing a gun at someone is considered "assault with a deadly weapon." The gun doesn't have to be fired. In other places, 'brandishing' (showing the gun in a threatening manner) is a crime. Both are generally considered "defensive gun uses" if someone does it to prevent or stop a crime. 4. I do not agree with the judge on that one at all. Can't deny service because someone thinks differently than you do. On the subject of tossing people for wearing a message the bar manager disagrees with. It seems like something that would be way to touchy to get into these days. What if a white truck driver comes in and gets kicked out for a MAGA hat, but then a gay black man comes in wearing one? After all, we're talking New York City, where anything can happen. Then the white guy would have an argument that there was a racial aspect to it, and it's illegal discrimination. The same as if a Muslim was booted and a white guy was permitted to wear, say, a turban. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 5. First off, beware of jumping with any sinus congestion. If you are 'stuffed up' the pressure can build up and do damage. The pain can be really intense (and distracting). Not being able to see out of your goggles because your nose is bleeding really bad is not a good thing to have to deal with (guess how I know those ). Yes, all jumps count, but tandems quickly reach the point of 'diminishing returns.' Toss in the congestion (which always lasts longer than you think) and I'd stay on the ground over there. The plane ride should be ok. Airliners are pressurized to around 5k, we go up to 14k. And we climb and especially descend a lot faster. OTC decongestants work, but I only use real Sudafed (the stuff you have to sign for) for jumping. The others can make you drowsy. To a large degree the 'wuffos' (people who ask "What for (whuffo) you jump from an airplane?") will never get it. A few will be sorta interested, but not enough for you to go into real detail. Some will say 'I've always wanted to do that someday', but if you offer to bring them out with you to the DZ to do a tandem this weekend, they will say 'no, I meant someday, not today.' 6. Maybe. But some places refuse service to anyone wearing a hat. Remove it or leave. Or a shirt with profanity on it. Or bike club colors. Or a variety of things. As long as the policy is enforced evenly, as long as it isn't an excuse for legitimate discrimination (and no, there isn't 'discrimination against white Christian males', no matter how much they cry and whine about it), then it's usually legal. I'm the first one to stand up for (real) free speech. But this isn't that. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 7. They have made it very clear that they don't believe the law applies to them. And if it starts getting a bit close, then Daddy just pays off the prosecutor, like he does for himself. It may get a bit more difficult here, because I don't think Mueller is running for any office, so 'campaign donations' aren't an option. 8. I do not agree with the judge on that one at all. Can't deny service because someone thinks differently than you do. I was wondering about that. Can bars in New York tell people to leave based on something like this if it weren't Trump related? Does this happen? Ever hear of a place requiring men wear a jacket and tie? Or a bar refusing to allow bike club guys to wear their 'colors'? As long as the same rules apply to everyone, this sort of dress code is usually legal. 9. I do not agree with the judge on that one at all. Can't deny service because someone thinks differently than you do. He didn't. He denied service because he was wearing a "MAGA" hat. He was told to remove the hat or leave. That hat expresses a political stance. One than many find 'deplorable.' Would you feel the same way about a place denying service to someone wearing, say, a Swastika shirt? (obviously, if the Nazi removed the shirt, he might no longer have a shirt on, so would fall under the 'no shirt' rule). "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 10. You're 100% wrong about this. If it were so easy you'd lose one every other jump you went on. They take way bigger hits in the course of a skydive and normal handling. They are not wrong. The gopro is pretty easy to intentionally brake off a helmet. Even more so when you have longer attachments. Sure they will. They break off really easily. Quickly too. Note: 7 seconds at terminal velocity (belly speeds) is around 1200'. Remember that the adhesive on those 'stickers' is strong enough to hold trim pieces onto cars. The glue pulls loose pretty easily at first, but let it set for 24 hours and try again (this is in the instructions on the adhesive). 11. Do you really think KJU is going to give up his nukes? Or offer any real concessions? He gets quite a lot of hard currency through his counterfeiting operations and by smuggling drugs through the 'diplomatic bag'. Trump is an idiot, especially when it comes to foreign affairs. KJU is fairly good at this. The fact that he's still alive and in power is testament to that. I'll bet fairly heavily that KJU knows exactly what he's doing. Don't be too surprised if Trump gets taken to the cleaners. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 12. I was pondering on where to put this. I think it goes well here. The Mango Mussolini has a new admirer. Kanye West. Nevermind that Trump has the support of the KKK. Nevermind that the staff at his casinos reportedly 'hid' black people so that Trump wouldn't have to see them. I guess they both need inordinate amounts of attention. They are both self-proclaimed 'geniuses'. Oh my. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  13. Corrected to reflect reality. Well, to imply that only the gun rights crowd spins the info is naive. The ways the anti crowd demonizes guns with inaccurate rhetoric, aided by the 'liberal media' who usually only report one side of the story, and sometimes even broadcasts outright falsehoods (CNNs story on "assault weapons" shortly before the '94 ban is one of the better examples). The recent posts on self-defense use of guns is another good example. NRA claims that it's a couple million per year (which is likely bad data). VPC claims its in the 'tens of thousands' (which is also likely not accurate). NRA's data comes from a survey that collected anecdotal information. Much of which was 'self reported' and unable to be verified - If someone brandishes a gun to frighten off an intruder or street thug and never calls the cops, it's still a 'defensive gun use', but there's no way to establish whether or not it ever happened. OTOH, the VPC claims numbers a lot lower. Going by their past behavior, it's likely that their numbers only include incidents where attackers were actually shot and wounded (or something like that). While those numbers are probably accurate and verifiable, the reality is that DGUs rarely involve shots fired, let alone dead or wounded attackers (last claim I heard was less than 10% of DGUs involve shots fired). So it's likely that the VPC numbers are far lower than reality. The correct number is probably somewhere between 'millions and tens of thousands.' But it's doubtful you will ever get the NRA to agree that they are lower. Or the VPC to admit they are higher. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 14. Depending on what you mean by "sick", it's fairly unlikely it was from jumping. One thing to keep in mind is that students need to stay current (well, all jumpers do, but students have a shorter time frame). You need to jump at least once every 30 days or go back and repeat the last level. If you are going to 'be out of town' and unable to jump, you may want to hold off until you are able to jump on a regular basis. Don't bother 'trying not to become obsessed.' It's far, far too late for that. You can read through the SIM, it's available as a free download. https://uspa.org/Portals/0/files/Man_SIM_2018.pdf You can also read the "Skydiving Duck". http://tailotherat.blogspot.com/2011/08/sky-diving-duck-ii-chicken-of-sky.html Try not to spend too much time on here. There is a lot of good info, but there's stuff you won't really understand, and a bit of bad info here and there. Until you have some experience, it's hard to tell the difference sometimes. 15. It can be done without costing the school system anything (or very little). A high school near me has a phys ed "Life Sports" class. The idea is exposing them to stuff they will actually continue to do once they leave school. Rollerblading, frisbee golf, laser tag, weightlifting & other workouts, archery and guns (and a lot more). It's usually a day or two for each activity. Kids pay the fees for each thing. Both the archery and guns are taught by a local hunter's safety teacher, who volunteers her time. Archer is free, she has the bows & arrows and there are a couple local municipal archery ranges. Guns cost the cost of the ammunition (which is paid by the kids individually, not by the school). The local shooting range allows the school to bring the kids down for no charge and several of the range staff volunteer their time. Guns are usually 2 days per term. 1st day is spent with 22 bolt action rifles, teaching basic safety, range rules and marksmanship. 2nd day they have the opportunity to try a wide variety of guns. AR-15 & AK-47, larger caliber bolt action hunting rifles, and pistols ranging from 22 up to 45 cal. No student is required to shoot anything, and while we encourage, we don't 'push' anyone to shoot anything they don't want to. There's usually one or two each time that have never even seen a real gun up close, are frightened and intimidated by them and are very uncomfortable. But they listen, pay attention, do what they are taught and really enjoy themselves. Those are often the kids who are most disappointed the 2nd day when it's all done. We've been doing this about 10 years (I am one of the range staff who volunteers to help). No problems, no issues. When it all started, the teacher who was putting the class proposal together called the then-president of the range (who is also the husband of the Hunter's Safety instructor) and explained the idea. He didn't know about getting access to the range, or finding guns, or ammunition or instructors or anything. The president basically said: "You get permission to do this, get the kids down to the range and pay for the ammunition we use, we will take care of the rest." 16. You're warning me? I've got someone telling me not to post about eBay and I'm off? You know, do whatever you want. This is getting childish and weird. Did you actually read what he posted? He didn't say not to post about it, he said find a seller who wants your business. E-Bay is full of scams and misrepresentations. I haven't bought anything off of there. Ever. 17. They aren't. They are advanced canopies that should be piloted by people who have the skills and experience to do so. I have no clue who you are, so I have no clue if you can or cannot pilot it safely. You may well be able to. However, if 'professional swoopers' are warning you that you are being unsafe under it, then you may want to park your ego and think about it. And I cannot delete my previous post, as you have requested. There's a time window for editing on here. That has passed, and it takes 'moderator powers' to do anything about it. 18. I guess the above is what bothers me the most. Something like a Katana isn't a canopy that should 'find you.' It should be a conscious, deliberate choice. And why does your profile show a lot more jumps than your post? Is it just the swoopers who are giving you grief, or is the DZ telling you you can't jump there with it? Generally, the swoopers have seen more than a few accidents. They've also seen the DGITs, and tried to persuade them to take a slower, more conservative path. Some listened, some didn't. Some who didn't paid the price. The ones I know are doing it to save the jumper from his own bad judgement, not just to be a dick. 19. And the important thing there is that you apparently know they make up 7% of all jumps. Most DZs don’t have that kind of data about non-incident jumps. I’m curious, how do you gather that? If filling out accident reports is so onerous that people complain about it, imagine providing that data for every jump. The data is there. Waivers usually have the info on H/C type, Reserve type & size, main type & size. Also gender, age & jump numbers. Manifest will usually differentiate WS jumps from other jumps. Not so much for angle, belly or FF, but it wouldn't be all that hard to sort out with a bit of asking around. SDAZ, where Bryan is the S&TA, is likely the busiest DZ in the world (it isn't 'most DZs', not by a long way). It's to their benefit to keep tabs on stuff, if for no other reason than to give themselves some indication of who to watch out for. If they simply fill out a short report for every reserve ride, with who it was, the rest of the info is already available. The big issue (as was noted) is taking all that raw data to get a baseline established, and then applying it to all of the incident data to develop something valid and usable. 20. Trolling for the NRA much. Or just a stooge for Breitbart? "That’s almost as catchy as “guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” The problem is: The 2 million figure — often inflated to 2.5 million in N.R.A. literature — is bogus. Defensive gun use is actually quite rare. A new paper from the Violence Policy Center... You dismiss (correctly) a report on Breitbart, but post an anti gun piece from VPC and expect it to be taken at face value? Please. 21. Points 1 and 2 in that piece have at least some basis in fact. Points 3 to 6 are simple rehashed conservative talk show host opinions. Well, I think #2 is a very long stretch. I have very little doubt that Comey & Trump discussed classified material. I also have very little doubt that Comey's memos contained classified material. But to conclude that the info that Comey released to the press was classified? Do you really think he is so stupid as to: 1 - not know what's classified and what isn't in his own memos? 2 - share classified material with people who aren't cleared? Please. 22. You don't see how the President of the United States publicly making disparaging comments about someone could be damaging to that person? Comments from the pulpit of a position described as the most powerful position on earth, don't have any impact? Interesting. What harm can be shown? Not just "he's the president, his statements must have impact." Comey would have to show that he lost a job (already gone), couldn't get another job (don't think he's looking all that hard), couldn't get a book deal or sales of the book were harmed (exact opposite on that one), or some other form of demonstrable harm. And, on the defense for Trump that he insults so many people that nobody takes those insults seriously, the NY Times has compiled a list. 446 people, places and things since announcing his candidacy. 23. No. I don't see any real problem gathering as much info as possible, other than making the form longer by asking for more detailed info may result in fewer people willing to fill out the forms. I just don't see any real benefit to it. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  24. Well, Trump found a lawyer. Rudy Giuliani. His role will be "limited", and he will focus on interfacing with Mueller, who he knows personally. He plans on getting a list from Mueller of what is needed to comply with the investigation, and thinks it will be a 'few weeks' to do that. I'm kinda curious how 'complying with' the investigation will bring it to a close, but he seems to think that's the case. Interestingly, he has taken leave from the firm he's with, for "matters unrelated to the firm or it's clients." It's noted in the story that many lawyers and firms have declined to work for Trump, for a variety of reasons. One of those reasons is the potential backlash from other clients or potential clients. 25. Not really. In part, the sample size is very small. Not only the total number of incidents, but the number of gear related incidents is miniscule.* In part, there's no baseline. We can say that (for example) a Vector H/C was involved in "X' accidents, and "Y" percentage of total accidents, but without knowing how many Vectors are in use, or the percentage of H/Cs that are Vectors, the X & Y are useless. I don't think we should 'skip the whole thing', mainly because you never know what info is important. But the sorts of things that statistical analysis reveals are usually already known from the accident investigation. It's pretty rare that the cause of an incident, particularly gear related ones, isn't understood. While there have been a few things that were caused by faulty gear, every one that I can think of had a cause determined and a fix implemented before the number got high enough to show up in the stats. * - If every incident, every malfunction that resulted in a cutaway was reported in full detail, then we might have enough data to draw conclusions, even without the baseline.
