The Continent’s Consensus on Climate?……Crumbling
wolfriverjoe replied to brenthutch's topic in Speakers Corner
He's having a hard time with it because HE WANTS TO BE OFFENDED. So he makes up shit that offends him, and then argues about it. The fact that it has NOTHING to do with reality doesn't matter. It's a standard propaganda technique. Very similar to what Brent does with EVs. Make up or deliberately misunderstand something, then argue against it. -
I'm guessing, that like so many other conservatives (on here and elsewhere) his ability to deny reality ran out. And he had ZERO ability to admit he was wrong. So he ran away and hid.

The Continent’s Consensus on Climate?……Crumbling
wolfriverjoe replied to brenthutch's topic in Speakers Corner
Oh please. This isn't even close to his most convoluted mental gymnastics. He's made much more ridiculous proclamations in the past. -
This was actually a large part of Dause's (attempted) defense. He claimed he had allowed a subcontractor to teach an independent class and took him at his word and reputation that he was a current instructor. However, it's a not that hard for even a non-USPA DZ to check credentials. And very foolish not to. Just about EVERY jumper who came out of Lodi has said very emphatically that Dause was 'king of his kingdom'. That he knew everything that was going on there. For him to claim that 'he didn't know' was ridiculous. For him to claim that the TI class was not part of the DZ operations and he didn't have anything to do with it is even more so. I heard a jumper who had started at Lodi that it wouldn't surprise her that Dause had the TI/E shortcut the course to get the TI candidates through faster.

AFF is the current preferred way to advance to your license. As noted, you go through several hours of ground school, then go up with your own rig, with 2 instructors holding you from both sides. There's a bazillion videos of it out there. Some DZs require a 'working tandem' (where you have specific goals to meet and tasks to accomplish). Some require tunnel time. Both of those are for good reason and give you practice and experience at things you need in the air. Some places are pretty good at giving 1st time tandems the 'Hey, if you want to do this for real, here's how' speech. Some, not so much. Is it possible to fall in love with it that fast? Oh yeah. My first jump was a static line (older method of training). I landed from it, took a couple of breaths to get my head straight and said "I am SO doing that AGAIN". And I did. A lot.

I don't think Benedict Arnold nominated anyone to the Supreme Court who would overturn 50 years of precedent (in part because the SC didn't exist) I don't think Benedict Arnold openly talked about nullifying the Constitution (also didn't exist) or becoming a dictator. OTOH, Arnold was deeply in debt and pretty much sold out the Americans for money. Trump is desperate financially and has likely sold out to the Russians. I would say Trump by a fair margin. But mostly because of the opportunities he had as President, opportunities that Arnold never had. All he had was a plan to let the Brits capture West Point. It would have been a huge setback for the Americans, but not likely one that would have led to defeat.

The 'success' part is evacuating something like 120,000 people in a matter of weeks. Not everything went perfectly or even well. But it still stands as one of the most successful evacuations in modern history. And, as far as 'caring about dead American servicemen', how about when Putin put bounties on dead US soldiers? Trump was well aware of it, yet said... Nothing. Because he wouldn't/couldn't say anything bad about his master.

I think it would be better in Gear & Rigging. If a moderator feels strongly enough about that, it may get moved. Note: My response may appear a bit sarcastic or snarky. Apologies in advance if it seems that way. That is NOT my intent. Sometimes its just hard to convey accurate emotions in a text response. It is a great question. However, it's been asked and answered in a number of different ways over the years. If you're new, you weren't around to see/hear those answers, so I think it's great you are thinking about this sort of thing and asking these sorts of questions. I heard this a while back, and have repeated it a bunch: There's no need to apologize for your ignorance, unless you do nothing to correct it. (I TOLD YOU I was stealing that, Sandy) With any sort of thing like this, a couple things have to be asked and answered: What benefit does it bring? What hazards does it add? How much does it cost? In the case of the double sided RSL, a few different solutions have been used. They aren't used much today, because they really aren't needed. RSLs work as intended, and either premature release or a 'hang up' due to a riser breaking happens very rarely these days. While not exactly what you are asking, the Collins Lanyard achieves pretty much the same thing. A quick search found this: (note who created the thread ) If you search more, you will find more.

Well, let's look at the facts of your assertions. Afghanistan: The deal to withdraw the US was negotiated by Trump's minions. It was done without any consultation with the Afghans. Same with the release of 5k Taliban prisoners. Trump withdrew all but a couple thousand US personnel before leaving office. Trump himself bragged that he left Biden with no choice in the situation. And Biden really didn't have any choice. He could continue the withdraw and leave Afghanistan to the Taliban, or he could try to send enough troops back to thwart the Taliban's intentions to take over. But that would have basically been an invasion. The Taliban would have had the ability to stop the US from sending in troops by air (they would control the airports) and a ground invasion would have been a HUGE mess. As far as the economic policies: The Dow Jones Industrial Average has hit 40,000. Inflation has been brought under control. The Fed has decided to not raise interest rates. Job creation has blown every existing record completely out of the water. Unemployment has been at levels not seen in a long time for longer than any time in the last 75 years. Last, Biden has a stutter. A speech impediment. Anyone who understands what that is also understands that Biden's speech patterns are completely consistent with a stutter. He's shown a lot of intelligence and mental acuity. His State of the Union addresses have been works of art. His handling of the hecking by the 'Freedumb Coocoos' was masterful. He HASN'T confused Jimmy Carter with Jimmy Connors. He HASN'T expressed admiration for a fictional cannibalistic serial killer. You, however, have done a very nice job of confirming my opinion.

Ok, I thought I replied to this, but either I screwed it up or a glitch didn't let it post. Being uniformed about women's fashion or TV shows (I am not informed on either of those) doesn't have any effect on the future of the country. If someone is so uninformed that they don't realize how evil Trump is, and especially if they vote with that level of ignorance, the they are... Fucking idiots.
-
If someone votes for Trump, 'tuning out' all the corruption and fascism, misogyny and hatred that he represents, then they are either fucking idiots, or truly evil. "Biden's too old" - Well, Trumpty Dumpty isn't much younger, and he's evil. "What about Hunter's Laptop" - Giuliani lost a defamation suit because of that laptop. And nobody with any expertise who's looked at it has said it has any chance of being real. What about Jared's 2 BILLION from the Saudis? The list could go on and on and on. But Trump is still evil. And anyone who supports him is responsible for supporting that evil.
-
Right. There's very little that honest, decent conservatives can do to stop the MAGA morons. The only real upside to it is that Trumpty Dumpty has control of virtually the entire R party. His daughter in law is now head. So, in true 'Trump Inc' fashion, she's looting the coffers. Spending every last dime paying Trump's bills. So the amount of money left for any other candidates (national, state & local) is virtually nothing. The big 'Mega Donors' (Koch bros, Griffin, Walton) are also backing away from Trump, and supporting primary challengers to the Freedumb Coo-Coos.

Meh. Like everything else in this world, Apple has pluses and minuses. So does Microsoft/PC. An old (like late 90s old) joke is that half the world thinks that Steve Jobs is the Messiah, and Bill Gates is the Anti-Christ. The other half thinks the exact opposite. I prefer PC myself, but a friend is a die-hard Apple user. For me, the pluses of the PC outweigh the minuses, and the minuses of Apple outweigh the pluses. For my friend, the opposite is true.

The Continent’s Consensus on Climate?……Crumbling
wolfriverjoe replied to brenthutch's topic in Speakers Corner
Ok, I hadn't heard 'Obiden' before, that's very silly, But wouldn't it be 'Obiden lover'? -
Except this is a bit more than standard 'stereotyping'. I'm 'painting all Republicans' WHO SUPPORT TRUMP with that brush. I'm not lumping all conservatives together as Nazis. But Trumpty Dumpty controls the Republican party. The MAGA morons have enough power at the primary polls to scare away any candidate willing to stand up and call Trump what he really is. Look at McConnel. Look at Graham. Look at the border bill recently. It gave the Rs everything they wanted. It didn't have everything the Ds wanted. It could have passed, it would have helped. But Trumpty Dumpty had his little bitch Johnson refuse to bring it up to a vote because he wanted to continue to pretend there's a crisis at the border. A crisis so severe that nothing should be done about it. And the MAGA morons ate it up. His daughter-in-law is in charge of the party and looting the coffers to pay the Mango Mussolini's bills. At the expense of 'lesser' candidates. Right now anyone who says they 'support the Republican Party' are supporting TRUMP. Period. And, after the 9 years we've had to see and evaluate his behaviors, ANYONE who continues to support Trump is either a fucking idiot or truly evil. Fortunately, his support is dwindling. He's had to make ridiculous claims about the cops 'closing off the streets' to try to rationalize the fact that he's had virtually no supporters outside the courthouse (like in the single digits). Funny how, despite the cops keeping everyone away, the line to attend the actual trial was long enough that people were lining up at 3am. And the "Freedumb Caucus' was able to stand outside, on camera, and spout their loyalty to him.
-
What the actual fuck are you talking about? How is the Republicans openly talking about this being the last free & fair election NOT like Hitler taking over Germany in the 30s? How was Jan 6 NOT an insurrection? How is EVERYTHING the Rs are doing to take over and destroy our democracy NOT a very clear parallel to the Nazis? And what is the comparison to calling blacks a blatant racial slur?

The Continent’s Consensus on Climate?……Crumbling
wolfriverjoe replied to brenthutch's topic in Speakers Corner
Only when it's inaccurate. -
Seriously? Hitler didn't start off exterminating people. Or even putting them in camps. He started with the 'blaming' rhetoric. Calling certain groups 'vermin' and saying they should be controlled. He rallied people to his hateful verbiage and called for them to follow him. He got himself elected, and then had his minions keep him in power. Any of this sound at all familiar? Last but not least was 'Kristallnacht'. When the SA, SS, Hitler Youth and 'interested onlookers' trashed Jewish property. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kristallnacht I had a really bad feeling that the 'Unite the Right' crap in Charlottesville was supposed to be something very similar. All the Nazi & KKK thugs rampaging around the town, destroying black or Jewish (or Muslim or Latino) owned property. Fortunately, the Governor of Virginia saw the potential for trouble and shut it down the second day. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unite_the_Right_rally You say you are 'exhausted with the Nazi bullshit'. I agree, but from a slightly different perspective. You seem to be tired of the comparisons between Trumpty Dumpty and Hitler. I'm scared to death of the similarities. The MAGA morons are following Hitler's playbook page by page. There seems to be a real chance they're going to pull it off. The 2025 project and some of the statements from CPAC are deeply disturbing and very frightening. The apparent fact that 2 of the 9 Supreme Court justices are bought and paid for MAGA stooges is worse. As long as Trump, the MAGA morons and the Alt Right people continue to act like Hitler, I'm going to keep calling them Nazis.
-
Well, considering that the head of the Republican party and defacto nominee for President is very clearly racist, sexist misogynistic and doing his damndest to imitate Hitler, it's hard not to. Considering that a bunch of his sycophants, including the Speaker of the House of Representatives (you know, 3rd in line for the Presidency) went to New York to support the Mango Mussolini, it's hard not to. Considering that the Rs themselves have ostracized anyone who criticizes the Orange Idiot, calling them 'traitors' if they point out how much of a piece of shit Trumpty Dumpty ACTUALLY IS along with calling for him to be held accountable for the CRIMES HE HAS COMMITTED, it's kind of hard not to paint them all with the same (rather broad) brush. I had some brief hopes that the Lincoln Project would take hold. That honorable Republicans would have an 'off ramp' to continue their platform while distancing themselves from the wannabe dictator. A few (a very tiny few) did. The rest fell into lockstep behind their Furher.

EV's / hybrids as a hedge against natual disasters
wolfriverjoe replied to billvon's topic in Speakers Corner
Yeah, the Anit-EV bigotry and hatred is pretty intense. I read a lot of articles before buying, and still read some here & there. The comments are simultaneously hilarious and disturbing. The level of stupidity, self righteousness, and certainty in them is very similar to climate change or even Covid precautions & vaccines. -
Well, human drivers struggle with those too.

Post trump Legal Actions, Including his Enablers
wolfriverjoe replied to Phil1111's topic in Speakers Corner
You mean Robert Costello, who's behavior was so egregious that the judge sent the jury out of the courtroom to yell at Costello? The jury was removed to prevent any sort of 'prejudicial action' because the judge basically laid into Costello for being a contemptuous douche. https://www.newsweek.com/maga-trump-witness-robert-costello-judge-merchan-1902929 Of course, the MAGA world is having a conniption about it. Because acting like a 3 year old, being disrespectful towards a judge in a trial, generally being, you know, a douche is what those people think is 'manly'. -
A quick search suggests Iran has a variety of Russian/Soviet helicopters, including Mi-17 transports. Some of them fairly new. Yet the Iranians choose a 'decades old' Bell 212 to transport the President. Hmmm... I wonder why they made that choice?
-
Nah. Let him go on demonstrating his true self. Back 'on topic', reports are that it was an old Bell 212 (commercial version of the military 'Huey'). The 'hard landing' was a bit more of a 'crash & burn'. No survivors. In addition to the President, the Foreign Minister was also killed. Considering the weather (blizzard conditions were reported during the search) and the state of Iranian aviation, it's interesting that both President & Foreign Minister were on the same aircraft. And, predictably, Iran is blaming the US for imposing sanctions that make it difficult to keep their aircraft flying.
