  1. I must assume your husband is Scottish; to most ears the Scottish accent is as smooth as a cheese grater. No matter how beautiful the woman; if she speaks with a Scottish accent, my mind goes to "Willy the Groundskeeper" from the Simpsons - not sexy. My vote is French or Russian. 2. Got to love the NRA "selling points" and descriptions on those items. Best one was: NRA Under the Desk Holster For those who need a firearm handy while checking email or paying bills ...Because logging into your Gmail is so dangerous "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  3. You seem fond of quotes, here’s one: “All seems a bit fucking arbitrary to me. Something good happens – praise God. Something bad happens – the Lord works in mysterious ways. Al Pacino “The Devil’s Advocate” Seriously though, we see some idiotic posts, but this one is repugnant. "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  4. I commend that you want to learn more about finance and economics. However having a little bit of information and “running with it” can be worse than having no understanding at all. Start with the basics and build on a foundation; don’t start with an assumption and merely seek supporting material and opinions. Literally, what is money/currency? And how is it measured? (for the USD it’s M1, M2 and M3). If you want to discuss inflation, understanding the difference between monetary and fiscal inflation is a start. This is skydiving website, by no means a source for economic understanding (have you been reading some of the posts here on the SC thread?) Here’s a cut/paste of a few books that are written in laymen’s terms that I think stand out: Want to learn about boom/bust read: Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds - Charles Mackay Want to learn about the Federal Reserve read: Secrets of Temple – William Greider Want some insight into the stock market and its movements read: Reminiscences of a Stock Operator - Edwin Lefèvre Dropzone.com: Got a skydiving query; get a skydiving answer. Want to learn about the global economy – You’re in the wrong place mate. "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  5. I've lost track of what this thread is about - Obama's birthplace, Sarah Palin's 55 IQ, or standard issue "Fire & Brimstone" Jesus talk. Your country could be that little bit better if less time was spent preparing a battle from your fortified bunker, return of Jesus or spacecraft to take you away. Maybe spend that time/effort to make things better. Some of the statistics thrown around here - fuck?? Google some stats on percentage of Americans that believe in Sasquatches or think they have been abducted by UFOs. "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  6. Agree with Ian & TK. With just simple numbers; population of 330m and someone as dimwitted as Palin is the best you have? It would have been an international embarrassment to have her in office. "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  7. Today’s Google homepage has a tribute/links on the 194th birthday to Léon Foucault. To save web searching, he was a scientist that showed, by his pendulum experiment, that the earth spins. However, in the first couple, links is this dimwit’s 12min video on how he thinks (supported by bible scripture) that the earth doesn’t move. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vz1XAgH4iGI He even posits that this is how the Coriolis Effect works. 8. Most fun I've had with a Halloween costume consisted of a pink shower curtain with polyester fibrefill stuffed underneath with arm/leg holes to make me blob. Then made a small wooden chair from Balsa wood to wear on my head. Won a contest and all evening people were seeking me out to ask what I was supposed to be - the answer "bubblegum under a chair" "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  9. That does look to be a poor design. Made in the USA? I thought Americans were supposed to be good at this gun stuff? Have the Blackhawk/Serpa guys talk to some proper German engineers; they'll sort them out out with something that works (and less likely to cause you to shoot yourself in the leg) "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  10. In the late 90’s and into the early 00’s, I was heavily into offshore & inshore yacht racing. Being a bit of a purist, I didn’t originally like the idea of the America's Cup moving away from monohulls, but quite like the cats now. I’ve previously been able to do some racing aboard some America's Cup boats (IACC Class, 25metre); they are some impressive machines. Tacking is done on a 5 count, with the crew listening to their number to move (example: I was runner grinder and didn’t start until I heard “three”) One thing you’d never notice unless aboard are that on America’s Cup yachts, the port side winches are wound counter-clockwise as opposed to clockwise – to keep the sheeting angles just perfect. For the America’s Cup Jubilee (150th anniversary of the first America’s Cup Race in 2001), the Aussie’s got permission to bring “Australia II” (12m boat that took the Cup away from the Americans in 1983) out of the museum and container ship it to the UK for the race. The museum curators came with the boat and ensured nothing could be changed on the boat – as it was exactly as it was the day it was removed from the water. To use modern instruments, they couldn’t drill any holes, so everything was held on by Velcro. There was some liquid in the bilge; it was removed and put in Ziploc bags to be put back in after the race. Aussie thoroughness and out of curiosity, they sent a sample for testing – the unsurprising result was a mix of seawater, hydraulic fluid and urine. 13. curious what is meant by ...A “Movie Rotate” feature also makes it easy to rotate a video right-side-up Will we be able to mount it lying flat on top of helmet as opposed to thinking up creative way of sidemounting? "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  14. As I’m not the first person to buy a new camera and ask about using it, I’ve revived this thread which still has relevant info. I have a Canon 700D (US model T5i) and am working out my settings. My planned settings setup would be: Setting: Tv (shutter priority) between 250-800 AF Operation: AI Focus Metering: Evaluative metering Drive Mode: Continuous shooting Image Type: RAW Two queries: 1. Using Tv, it doesn’t seem that you can disable the flash popping up. Is that possible? (camera setting, not using tape) 2. Is it generally better to disable or enable the “Autocorrect Image Brightness/Contrast”? "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  15. Thanks for the info. To keep this thread on just these specific cameras (Canon EOS 700D/T5i & 100D/SL1) and not drift it, I’ll take my “how to” queries to this thread: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=2878945;search_string=settings%20for%20still%20camera;#2878945 One feedback on playing around with my 700D (T5i) is that I find the burst rate is consistently higher than the specs say – nearly always 6 fps or higher. I’m using a 100MB/s card, so assume that helps. "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  16. I opted for the EOS 700D (T5i) as I’ll use it more on the ground than in the air. However, for a dedicated helmet still cam, the SL1 seems quite nice. Is there a thread or article that gives some info on settings for the camera when jumping? I’ve never jumped a still camera, so open for advice. Re my setup, my helmet is as TonFly CC1 (with ZKulls on top & side). After doing some searching, I'm tentatively planning on buying: Conceptus Tongue Switch http://www.conceptusinc.com/tongueswitch.htm (seems most users end up biting/chewing through bite switches and I don’t really see the benefit of a blow switch) ZKulls Camera Plate http://www.rcb-lab.com/stills-camera-brackets-and-plates (already have ZKulls on helmet and like them) Silicone cover for camera http://www.enjoyyourcamera.com/Camera-Protection/Camera-Protection-Cover/easyCover-Silicone-Camera-Cover-for-Canon-EOS-650D-and-700D-Customized::5922.html (they’re cheap and will keep camera from getting scratched up) Would also be interested in the choice of switch, if anyone finds the tongue switches not useful. Feeling useless...

I note from your prior posts that you understand the difference between a job and a career – I definitely see you in the latter, which is about developing yourself, not just the action/service you provide the company. At some point in your career, you will be guaranteed to work within a company/setting that is dysfunctional. However, the first question to ask yourself is what do you want to achieve personally. Is it the money, respect, autonomy, admiration? Not meaning to go “Zen” on you, but what do you want? Positive feedback on your benefit to a company doesn’t have to come from within the company itself; it can also come from the business community and your industry sector. Example: If you feel you have useful insights, why not write some articles for industry publications or get yourself known as a speaker/panellist at industry conferences. Albeit, this is not entirely altruistic for your company, but given the choice to do something that benefits the company vs. something that benefits the company & Nataly, I don’t think it’s selfish to opt for the latter. 18. I'm also looking at the T5i vs SL1 (EOS 700D and 100D for Europe) right now. Also, maybe looking at the new 70D coming out imminently. Attached is a comparison sheet I made from the Canon UK site. I compared the 700D and 100D in a shop and was surprised at how much lighter the 100D was. However, one note re skydiving the 100D has bottom card access whereas the 700D has door on side. Anyone have feedback/thoughts on jumping the SL1 vs T5i? Seems the only real differences are the SL1 has 4fps vs 5fps of the T5i, non-tilting LCD screen and bottom access to card. "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  19. I also hate the form factor. GoPro have done everything sans added hooks to it to make is snaggy. The silly thumbscrew makes it worse. Looking at the Sony HDR-AS15, but can't figure out a clean way to side mount (as it can't lay sideways and I don't want to top mount it vertically) "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  20. At 20ish jumps, you’ll probably find an indicator light is a distraction and could be dangerous. Probably better to ask the jumper seated next to you to tell you if your camera is turned on or not at this point. "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  21. The app Aeroweather Pro is by far the best I've found. Works globally and useful for pilots or any other air sports. "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  22. Pardon, I overestimated the level of comprehension of the SC thread faction. “This” was in reference to any simple ordinary everyday encounter between members of the public (examples such as standing in line to order a chicken sandwich or going for a parking place) ending up in a shooting because everyone is packing. "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  23. No matter what you think, this kind of event seems prevalent only in the US. http://www.outsideonline.com/news-from-the-field/Missouri-Man-Shoots-River-Runner.html "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  24. My wife met Keith Richards on a flight. Instead of sitting in his upper class reclining bed/seat, he spent most of the flight sitting in front of his seat on the floor. My wife smiled and asked “why are you sitting on the floor?”. To which he had the best reply “Darling, I’ve spent most of my life on the floor”. 25. Agreed; I was more so making a point re the thread title of “Wall Street” inferring the whole financial markets, instead of “SAC”. Of course, some may know that SAC is a multi-strategy hedge fund as opposed to a single-strategy hedge fund. A point that is lost on those who, without Googling, couldn’t actually tell you what a hedge fund is. "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
