  1. I really like Elsinore's bunkhouse. A bunch of rooms with 2-4 beds each, common kitchen area, bathroom/showers right around the corner. Right next to manifest, and pretty close to everything else, too. Cheap, and comfortable. I also really liked Skydive Carolina's. Similar to Elsinore's, except the mattresses are a little less comfy, the bathrooms are in the same building, and there's no kitchen. Brian
  2. Here's a video showing both an inside and outside view of the method Chuck described: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOXjateu_4s Forgive my cheesiness and inexperience; it was my first skydive. Brian
  3. These are the 4 I know of in Oregon: Eugene Skydivers Creswell, OR Review Skydive Oregon Molalla, OR Review Central Oregon Sky Sports Madras, OR Review Skydive Eagle Creek (no web page) Eagle Creek, OR Review The first two are USPA dropzones, the last two are not. I have physically been to the first two, and have actually jumped at Skydive Oregon. I'm pretty sure Central Oregon Sky Sports still exists, but have no idea about Eagle Creek. You can find out where it's physically at by searching google maps for "skydive near:eagle creek, or" Good luck, and don't forget to have fun! Brian
  4. This is what makes skydiving such a great community. Bravo! Brian
  5. I read the whole thing a couple days ago, just didn't feel like posting. Sounds fun! Good story, too. I'm glad it worked out well, even if it wasn't perfect. I loved how you mentioned forgetting to brief "the cut." Congratulations! Brian
  6. You can crash at my place if you need to. I'm pretty much on the way, between IAH and Spaceland. I can pick you up if you need, but I may or may not be able to take you to the DZ Friday morning. I have to check my work schedule on Monday. We get a 4-day for Memorial Day, but I don't know if we get Friday off or if it's Tuesday. Brian
  7. They had an R44 at Skydive Houston all day today. They did 10 loads out of it, at $50/jump. We got 6,000 ft on my viso, and I think the bird's alti read slightly higher than that (6,250 I think). I can't comment for certain on forward speed, but it was low enough that I didn't notice it. Turnaround was about 15 minutes between loads, when they were back to back. The user ar5000 here organized it. If you shoot him a PM, I'm sure he can give you specifics. ETA: Here's a link to his thread on it: Helicopter Jumps near Houston Feb 21 Brian
  8. The only times mine has shown incorrect exit altitude is when I pull right out the door, or if I track up the hill right out the door. Both times my descent rate isn't what it expects for a freefall, so it doesn't count it at first. I think it would work fine if I set it for student mode, but I haven't tried that yet (I forgot how, and haven't bothered to look it up yet). Brian
  9. Try this webpage: Doc's Diving Medicine Homepage. It's about ear pressure stuff for SCUBA divers, but the information works for sky divers as well as for water divers. The video is about an hour long, so you might want to download it from one of the links on the page. The author is "a Board Certified Diving Physician and Diving Medical Officer for the University of Washington, Medical Director for the Divers Institute of Technology and Director of Hyperbaric Medicine for HealthForce Partners." Brian
  10. Okay, my mistake. Since it didn't specify, I thought "life flight" was a typo for "live flight." I've edited out my original post. Brian
  11. Edited because of a misunderstanding on my part. Brian
  12. Is "near Houston" at Waller, Spaceland, or elsewhere? Brian
  13. LOL, yeah its brand new, i think it was inducted in 1971. =D, its not a personal helicopter, its a military flight, so im sorry guys, no jumping from the helo :(...im still trying to get permission to jump from the fucking thing. maybe i will just leave randomly over some desert, but i hope they pick me back up if i do :). I'm active duty, so it'd probably be okay to take me for a whirl ... with my rig on Brian
  14. That's why I said "maybe." Because I was guessing, based on USPA.org's distance measurements. This brings up an interesting question, though ... how far from your target cities are you willing to travel for a DZ? Brian
  15. Las Cruces is a bust, as far as I can tell. I tried to plan something when I drove through there a few weeks ago, and got nothing. As for Austin, try Skydive San Marcos or Skydive Aggieland. Maybe Skydive Temple, too. Oh, wherever you go, you have to let people jump from your helicopter. Especially me. Brian
  16. This is probably the best response in this thread. It encourages continued use of the search function, as well providing some guidance in *how* to search for threads on the requested topic. Baksteen's post illustrates the issue, BIGUN's demonstrates a solution. Brian
  17. Thanks for the advice. I don't have kids or anything, so I don't much care about the schools; except better schools imply better neighbors. Thanks :) Brian
  18. Baytown is home to numerous chemical and refinery plants, and is generally considered to have a bad odor in the air because of that. There seems to be an industrial accident of some type about once a year in that area, sometimes spewing toxic chemicals into the air, sometimes causing evacuations. Welcome to Baytown! Ahh. Well, I don't have a choice for Baytown. Where I live I have some choice in, but I have to work in Baytown. Brian
  19. The industrial look? What do you mean? For anybody: Anyways, I've got a mashup of potential homes in a google map. Any opinions or recommendations for it? Brian
  20. Cool, I was afraid traffic would make the drive a lot worse. I've heard horror stories about Houston-area traffic. Brian
