The UK monarch has been essentially powerless since Charles I was beheaded by order of Parliament in 1649, and the English Bill of Rights passed in 1689.

I'm not clear why these "no kings" events and slogans are so popular. Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, UK, Netherlands, Belgium, Japan . . . all have monarchies and democracy seems to be doing better there than here in the US right now.

Sorry to hear that, but it is still not a sound basis for national policy. It is also a fact that if you are walking down a dark street at night, the person most likely to rob or kill you will be a citizen, not an undocumented immigrant.

Yes, Liz Truss lasted what, 7 weeks, before being thrown out. We have to put up with Trump, who is even more incompetent, authoritarian, and certainly more evil, for another 190 weeks.

The Supreme Court lifted a lower court order that blocked the Department of Government Efficiency from accessing the Social Security Administration’s data systems. Since Social Security tracks data from cradle to grave, here is just some of the information DOGE will now have access to: Your name, Social Security number, date and place of birth, gender, addresses, marital and parental status, your parents’ names, lifetime earnings, bank account information, immigration and work authorization status, health conditions if you apply for disability benefits, and your use of Medicare after a certain age. Before the ruling, Social Security data was always tightly restricted. Anyone see a potential for abuse here?

Here's an alternative view: The three-judge panel at the US Court of International Trade ruled in favor of a permanent injunction on Trump's global tariffs, one that would block the tariffs TACO announced on “Liberation Day”. The ruling will also prevent Trump from enforcing the tariffs he placed on imports from Canada, China and Mexico earlier this year.

Wall Street's trendy new acronym: TACO—or “Trump Always Chickens Out.” The TACO theory was coined earlier this month by Financial Times columnist Robert Armstrong, adding a name to the practice of loading up on stocks when Trump first announces the tariffs and then selling when he ultimately backtracks on enforcing them.
