I am pretty sure the flow is going to be fully turbulent. The velocity is fairly high. The characteristic length is relatively small. Reynolds number for freefall will be on the order of 300,000. In a wind tunnel it is well over 1e6. The flow in freefall is turbulent. If it were not, there were be little or no burble above you!

Not as much fun, but I take lessons in a Cessna 172 that has tail number N172WF. That's all I got!

I had that poem modified for me, since I am a Fluid/thermo engineer. e to the x. dy dx, e to the x, dx secant, tangent, cosine, sine, 3.14159 pi, i, square root of 3, flow, rho, delta T.

Recent Experiences with Carry-On Bags in USA? (Feb 2009)
sxc replied to mdrejhon's topic in Safety and Training
On Feb 5-7th, I traveled to Skydive Jamaica. I brought my rig carry-on. I passed through Milwaukee, Atlanta and Kingston. I never even got a second glance. The TSA guy in Milwaukee wanted to know, in a casual conversational way, where I was going. Another TSA guy commented that skydiving is on his bucket-list. I invited him to the DZ! Honestly, nobody cared! It was WAY less hassle than I was expecting. -
I have a life policy with West Coast Life. I specifically have it cover skydiving. $35/month for $100k for 10 years.
-
I didn't tip the instructors after each AFF jump. But I would advise that you become very familiar with the beer rules and stick to them! Being a newbie skydiver, almost every time you go to the DZ you will have a 'first', so just bring the stuff with you when you go!!

Do you really believe that? Frozen water will displace liquid water equal to its own weight, this is the reason ice floats (1 gram of ice takes up more space than 1 gram of liquid water). Imagine an ice-cube, floating in a glass. Then imagine that you remove the ice-cube and are left with a "hole" in the glass of water where the cube was. If you then melt the ice cube, the resulting water will exactly fill the hole. You can easily test this at home by putting some ice cubes in a glass and see if the level changes as it melts. As long as the water isn't frozen solid the volume will not change. That is not entirely true. Water expands when frozen and so your experiment with the ice cube removed and leaving a "hole" in the water, will not be completely filled with the water from the melted ice cube. Water has a maximum density at 4 degrees C. It is one of a few substances that expand when frozen - most contract when they get colder! And the ice-cubes in the glass would overflow the glass if you could completely fill the glass with the same volume of ice. A better test would be, to fill a container with water and freeze that. If the container cannot expand, it will break when the water freezes.

Also, the phrase 'Saved by the Bell' originates from reviving the dead. They used to tie a bell onto the dead person's finger with a string that was placed outside of the closed coffin. If the bell sounded anytime before the burial, it was because the person inside was still alive and moving. Hence the term' 'Saved by the Bell'

It is sad how many Americans refer to them as Euro-dollars.

well, you know, when you are sky-godess at 50 jumps you can do things like that!!!
-
but at least I can type! oh, and pack, and pay for my jumps. Blue skies.
-
That was not necessarily directed at JUST ME? Wow, I don't think I have ever seen anyone insult a whole user group in one fell swoop like that before! You really are talented.
-
"Everyone on here thinks they're a 'skygod' or whatever - we're all mortals here." Excuse me, but I take offense at this. You were looking for a way to make some money to skydive. I alerted you to an job opening at a DZ and THIS is what I get in return? Thanks. May there be a low cloud ceiling every day you set foot on a DZ!

Go read the Classifieds. There is an ad for office personnel in Eloy.

I almost bought a rig from this guy in August. He answered any questions I had about it. I sent him $50 via paypal for shipping the rig to my DZ. The rig arrived from an address in NY. The rig arrived with all the added stuff the ad said it would have. The rig was what was advertised. It was brand new. It was too big for me. I shipped it back to him. (actually, he wanted me to ship it to the next prospective buyer, but I sent it back to him at his address in Florida.) It all seemed legit to me..... but I am just a newie.... I eventually bought a rig from another person here on dropzone.com. Same procedure.

You might also want to travel a little further south and try Skydive Midwest! It is a fun DZ!

Landings ... I am frustrated beyond belief!!!
sxc replied to OlympiaStoica's topic in Safety and Training
I have far fewer jumps than you, but my landings also leave a LOT to be desired!! I was hoping to do a canopy course this summer, but it does not look like I can mange that, so it is a definite for next summer. But thankfully, I am not hurting myself - I am a PLF Queen!! I am hoping that it is just going to take practice. Like driving a car - you probably couldn't pull up to a stop light and stop at the line perfectly the first few times. Every landing I try and get it right, but so far, all I have managed is some spectacular grass stains!! If you figure out any great insights, please share! -
So, a female engineer...do you think your fellow engineers suck at dating too? I have learned 2 things over the years regarding dataing .... (i) there is no accounting for taste! (ii) there is a lid for every pot! I work with a guy who was far down the line when the Lord was giving out good looks. His hobby is playing with model trains. He is, to me, downright strange! However, he is happily married with 2 kids. Which means, when I (who I would like to think was further up the good-looks line!) was single, he was getting some!! He found his other half and she loves him. So the guy I thought would be useless at dating was not as useless as we all thought!! As to Shah's question about a guy calling all the time etc., well, personally I like to hear from a guy often. Before my boyfriend moved in, he would call me at 6am every morning because that was the only time we had to talk! It worked for us. At least she will not be any doubt as to whether he is "just not that into her" or not!!! Give the guy the benefit of the doubt for a minute and see what happens.
-
Oh, quit with your logic. It's all about the game! Sorry, I can't help it with the logic thing ... I'm an engineer!!

How do you know the girl does not like the constant texts and the 2 dates-in-2-days-thing? Maybe she would love to go couch shopping with him....

If it were me, and I really wanted a "fix", I would go hang out at the DZ, do a Tandem or two. Or just go for a ride-along on the plane. They are much less expensive and they are good for an altitude fix. And bring beer to the DZ!

This topic has been covered a number of times, so a search might show you some more information. I triple checked that my company provided health insurance covered "adventure/high-risk" sports. I am in the process of buying a life insurance policy that specifically covers skydiving. The premium is usually increased by approx. $2.50 per $1000 of coverage from companies that will take on the risk. Many of the larger life insurance companies do.

I am in the process of buying a policy now. The increase in the yearly premium is $2.50 per $1000 of coverage. This includes skydiving and scuba diving.

You might also want to check out Skydive Midwest. It is on the IL/WI boarder along I-94 with nice views of the lake and Chicago and Milwaukee at altitude! They are a fun group of people and excellent instructors.
