Do you oppose same-sex marriage for religious reasons?

I think that's the best answer: National Geographic News: Homosexual Activity Among Animals Stirs Debate Edited to add: Nice to see you, Richard. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb -
I loved the pictures my daughter brought home from school, but they weren't art, as we define art. I'm no longer sure what the argument is about. You seem to have this point you want to make, but it still has nothing to do with the topic, as constituted. You will recall that this whole to-do began, Walt, because I said that threads like these are a bad idea--someone always ends up with their feelings hurt. (This was in a PM, which is why no one will remember reading the latter part of that statement.) I haven't changed my mind about that, because most people do not understand "hot" by your definition, and this is not a discussion about "beauty." It is a discussion about eye candy. But you wanted the thread to be okay, and your argument for that is that all women are beautiful. But it's not the point, and it's still not what the thread is about. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

Totally agreed. Your question to me was (paraphrased) "why aren't gays supporting polygamy?" I think the answer to that is simply that we (meaning all of us) support and advocate for what is near and dear to our hearts. As for the question that GTA answered on my behalf, let me say this. I grew up on Heinlein, and so my curiosity about all the possible kinds of marriage was aroused at an early age. The purpose of marriage is for the protection of children. I support any arrangement that does this. I do not support people who hate each other or who simply cannot get along staying together for that purpose; therefore, an institution that protects children while preventing a life of misery for their parents seems to me to be ideal. Extended families serve a very important function, but with our increasing mobility, we are fast losing that structure of support. In addition, lifetime marriage to one person in an age when lifespans are long is probably not very practical. If we permit some form of group marriage, we may find that people are more inclined to build than to tear down. Those who prefer to be in a monogamous one man/one woman relationship should, of course, be permitted that choice. I just don't think it's good for the children. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb -

It's the easy statement to make and very politically correct and very lazy. All statements are easy to make. There's nothing politically correct about it. Very few people support polygamy and other non-conventional forms of marriage. It's very lazy to say something is lazy without saying why it's lazy. IMO, I don't think that married couples should have special privileges. If you can't extend the same benefits to all people, then it's not very egalitarian to have those benefits at all. So let's take them away from everyone and start from there. We'll distribute everything to individuals, not to couples. And I think the tax breaks should go straight to the education fund for the children. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb -

Quite right, old testament... But what about gay rights organizations? I'm not entirely sure that one has anything to do with the other, except that both are proscribed in this country. For the record, I support any type of marital arrangment that works, particularly when there are children involved. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Many polygamists are also deprived of their 'right'. God supports the right to polygamy. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb -

Gay marriage isn't progress. You say that "gay marriage isn't progress" and you go on to say "Civil unions? No arguments from me" so it at first looks like your argument is merely with a word. Unfortunately, you then say "But I'm not thinking only of myself; I'm thinking of the USA that grandchildren and great-grandchildren, etc. will live in. We have a responsibility to them. Family is all-important. I realize that many who grew up in dysfunctional families disagree about the importance of the concept (of Family)" and now I'm trying to figure out what you really mean. Children will be forbidden to those in civil unions? Children in civil unions will have to be cautioned not to call their living unit a "family"? I resent your saying that those of us who grew up in dysfunctional families disagree about the importance of "family." "Family" is a basic human need, MB, and those without one sorely feel the lack--sometimes pathologically so. From personal experience--self and others--most of those I know who grew up in dysfunctional families spend their lives seeking to construct a substitute family in place of the original, non-working, family unit. Furthermore--because it seems to be the implication--I don't believe you will find (if you take the time to do the research) that gays come from dysfunctional family units in any greater numbers than do straights. Please avoid making assertions that fly in the face of both the facts and of elementary human psychology. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Your child won't have withdrawals from skydiving. Your child won't get addicted to skydiving. While I wouldn't let my wife skydive while pregnant I consider it less risky than smoking. Women who smoke while pregnant are trash and don't diserve to be mothers. IT just makes me angry as hell to think about. People who aren't able to spell and use proper grammar don't deserve to be parents. Control freaks don't deserve to be parents. People who can't control their temper don't deserve to be parents. rl P.S. I smoked--less, but I still smoked. My daughter had a healthy birth weight, and she had no problems related to smoking. I don't appreciate being referred to as "trash." If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb -

You're assuming, of course, that He made them and that other humans did not. Uh... Science has advanced that much while I wasn't looking? Oh wait. Are we offering up weird psychological theories for gayness? Believe me, Michael, if these were applicable, I'd be a lesbian. Did anyone read the links I posted? Anyone? rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb -

You want a massage too, Keith? This is nuts. I only argue in these threads for the entertainment value--it's compelling in a gory accident kind of way to watch some of these folks twist themselves into knots, because one thing I know for sure: Reason and logic have nothing to do with it. The historic record has nothing to do with it. Basic human decency has nothing to do with it. Edited to add: Biology has nothing to do with it. Sometimes it's just too much to bear. Nice post, Rob. I enjoyed the clarity of thought, even if it won't do a damn bit of good. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb -
Don't forget to take some doggie treats for the beasts. Just don't drown her, okay? She's the only daughter I've got. Edited to add: I missed the edit, you asshole. What're you gonna do? Tell her stories? Show her pictures of you spinning me around in the sky? What? Of all the people in the world that I'm not afraid of her being around, Vinny, you are number one on the list. I'm sorry if that wounds your ego but it's the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. rl P.S. How did she know it was you?
