According to the review I read, "the 160-page, coffee-table quality book features exposes on 20 Red Bull athletes." According to the web page for the magazine, it features the "20 greatest athletes now," including "base-jumper Miles Daisher" and "freeskiier Shane McConkey." Russel is a public relations icon for BASE. He is also an object lesson for anyone who has ever said "I can't." Parents of small children are not going to point to basejumpers on waterskis and say "See what is possible," but they will point to Russel and say, "Look what he can do." But just as the other guys use their legs as their normal mode of transportation, Russel uses his wheelchair as his normal mode of transportation. It seems to me that the mere ability to be in control of ones own exit does not compare with a stunt. Without reference to the additional precautions that were taken by Russel's crew, the comparison of Russel's wheelchair jumps with waterski exits is an invalid analogy. It is also narcissistic and, to at least one of us--me, that is--obnoxious. BTW, nice job, Russel. You're my hero. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. CIA Member Reveals Clinton & Bushes Behind JFK Jr. Assassination?

My mistake, you're correct. However, I think Clinton is equally to blame as Bush Sr. for the mess. Bush left the people, Clinton didn't do anything more when he came into office. They both fucked up the situation really bad. Seems to be the name of the game for every president. Desert Storm was the answer to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait (and the fear that Iraq would then move into Saudi Arabia). When the stated goal of the coalition was met, the participants returned to their respective homes...in Afghanistan, Argentina, Australia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Egypt, France, Greece, Hungary, Honduras, Italy, Kuwait, Morocco, The Netherlands, Niger, Norway, Oman, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, South Korea, Spain, Syria, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States. (The Japanese and Germans sent money, not soldiers.) I agree it would have been better to clean out the viper's nest at the time, but the coalition refused to back such a move, and the US elected not to go forward without its support. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Proposal: Parks need an update Officials warn against national park development at the expense of natural-resource protection By PARIS ACHEN Mail Tribune A set of proposed revisions to national park policy could open Crater Lake and other national parks to cell-phone towers, snowmobiles and private water craft. National Park Service employees warn the changes, proposed by the Department of the Interior, would alter the main mission of the agency by rolling back protections for wildlife and natural resources and ushering in development. The changes "would allow uses that could impair parks permanently and change the entire purpose for why national parks were established," said George Buckingham, former chief ranger at Crater Lake National Park. Park Service officials in Washington, D.C., say the proposal is only one of several sets of revisions they are considering to help bring national parks up to date. Specifically, it was intended to provoke dialogue about management policies, said David Barna, a Park Service spokesman. The changes are the creation of Paul Hoffman, who oversees the park service as deputy assistant secretary of the interior. Hoffman was appointed to the position in January 2002 after serving as executive director of the Cody Country Chamber of Commerce in Cody, Wyo., and state director for then-U.S. Rep. Dick Cheney from 1985 to 1989. Crater Lake National Park officials declined to surmise how the proposed revisions would affect Oregon’s only national park, located on 183,224 acres in Klamath County. "Until you actually take the regulation and put it in practice, you don’t really know how it will affect Crater Lake," said spokesman Michael Justin. But former Park Service employees say the changes would conflict with much of the work happening at Crater Lake, including a project to relocate parking away from the rim to improve the view of the lake. If Hoffman’s proposal is adopted, "you could put ski boats on the lake," Buckingham said. "There are already people who object to concession boats on the lake. "Snowmobiles could potentially go on every paved road in the park." Park Service management policies are based on congressional intent, case law and the 1916 Organic Act and have given parks the most natural resource protection of any federally managed land. Since 1916, the Park Service has been charged with maintaining parks "unimpaired" for future generations. Park officials have the authority to ban an activity they determine may lead to impairment. Under Hoffman’s proposal, the definition of impairment would change from "an impact to any park resource or value (that) may constitute an impairment" to one that can be proved to "irreversibly harm" resources. The Tucson, Ariz.-based Coalition of National Park Service Retirees, headed by Bill Wade, former superintendent of Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, is opposing the potential changes, which were leaked last week. The coalition has about 400 members. The move to revise the policies was prompted by a congressional request in 2002 and increasing public demand for modern comforts and activities in parks, such as cell phone reception, base jumping and geocaching, Barna said. A group of 16 Park Service employees are working to come up with recommendations for policy changes. Hoffman’s proposal is not the basis for the recommendations, Barna said. Park Service Director Fran Mainella will have final say on what draft is published in the Federal Register for public comment. Barna said the draft could be out as soon as the end of September. Mainella, the Department of the Interior and Congress could ultimately all play a part in which version is adopted. "Regardless of what happens in redrafting, the Department of (the) Interior is going to do what it can to get (the Hoffman proposal) in there," Wade said. "It can only be public outcry and influence from Congress that can be brought to bear on this and make the effort to turn it back." for the war supporters out there (warning: offensive site)
RhondaLea replied to busaunit's topic in Speakers Corner
I wasn't referring to the pictures as being stupid, illogical and inflammatory, but the site itself. As to the pictures, I've seen very similar photographs on such websites as rotten.com. The horror of a violent death is not limited to war. As to the text, it too is propaganda, which makes it stupid. I don't care what your propaganda is, propaganda is stupid. Finally, the site is illogical because it attempts to make illogical comparisons and inferences. You want to say "War is hell", then say that and say why. Don't think that making comparisons between nudity and war even begins to make sense. Furthermore, I'm about fed up with the "oil interests" argument. It's just more propaganda. If the day ever comes that someone can conceive of the multitude of reasons for doing a single act, I'll be willing to listen to the argument. This one-sided shit, however, doesn't fly with me. With regard to the question you pose, I think that with the advent of the internet, most of those who walk into a recruiter's office are pretty well aware of the graphic depictions of death in war. And somewhere in your theory, you need to account for those who re-up after having seen carnage such as that depicted in these photos. Finally, in some workplaces, these photos would be as much of a problem as pornography, and therefore, some warning should have been posted as to the content of the page. rl P.S. Did you really mean to say that you "gave air support to Saddam"? And regardless of who you were giving air support to, how much carnage did you actually see up-close-and-personal? This is how wars start, o pacifistic one. You have made clear through subsequent postings that you blame the soldiers for doing their jobs. I think I said earlier that there are sociopaths in all parts of society. If you wish to blame all soldiers for the sins of the few, then you will have to take responsibility for the sociopaths running loose in civilian life. By your logic, you are no better than they are, and their acts reflect on you. This is how wars start...if you want to put an end to war, you need to realize that it begins with individuals, not with groups, not with governments. But as long as you believe it is okay to go around taking potshots at others, there will continue to be wars. Sometimes all it takes to stop a bloody conflict is a simple apology for the first transgression, along with the sincere promise not to do it again. It's remarkable how few understand this. It is even more remarkable that when it comes down to choices, even those who understand it will choose to cling to their "right" to be offensive. I do. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

Now it's semantics? You said: thank god my tax dollars are going into killing women and childern in iraq 100 of billions of dollars of it You also said: I support the troops but not what you do. How does that work you tell me?when the troups do the killing. I'm not going to argue with you about the specific words you used. If you want to retract what you said and apologize to the military personnel you insulted and attempted--but failed--to degrade, it would be welcome. I will not engage in a protracted argument about whether "children" includes "babies," and you clearly indicted as killers of women and children the soldiers who are honoring their vow to defend and protect. You spelled my name wrong. I support wholeheartedly the men who serve. I've already said I have real problems with the way this war is being fought. Wars should fought as quickly and as cleanly as possible, without all this pussyfooting around. So what fence, exactly, am I sitting on? We're not going to put an end to war tomorrow, so we may as well start fighting the wars we're involved in as if we intend to win them. As I said in the other thread where you posted this link, you do not trick others into looking at carnage without warning. Apart from the horror value of the pictures, the website has nothing to recommend it on a factual level. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

Do you know any personally who have not applied for this reason, Gerry? You can't be worried about someone seeing your name on the list. I don't get it, you know. This is a hoorah that flared up quite some time ago on the BASE Board. Based on this post and on your last post, it seems that you have recently learned how to use the "search" feature for the sole purpose of bringing up old pissing contests. What I wonder is, why would you want to do this? I think the better way to get your question answered is to email Rick and Joy and ask them. I'm sure they'll be forthright about exactly what they do and do not disclose. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

That could be said about a lot of people. I'll avoid invoking Godwin's Law except by implication. Even when "he wins the war," he's going to have to pull a hat out of a rabbit to get a generally positive historical review. But this discussion is drifting, y'know. Not only is it no longer about the topic of the thread, but it's not even about the topic that caused the thread to end up in SC. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Now you're getting into a whole 'nother issue: how foolish are we who live in disaster-prone areas. Hey, I live on a big sandbar--far enough from the ocean to give myself a false sense of security, but still in a state that, by its inherent nature, is patently unsafe. This issue raises (again) the whole lot of questions about allocation of funds that have been debated--unsatisfactorily--for years. I don't pretend to see the big picture, I just see the disaster area after the fact and rue our lack of foresight, right up to the bitter end. Right now, however, I'm operating under the assumption it will take a lot more time and money to clean up what happened in New Orleans than it would have cost to prevent this outcome. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. I dislike the Republicans and the Democrats equally, although for different reasons. I don't give much credence to spin, but I do care very much about facts. Regardless of Blumenthal's motivation or politcal affiliation, regardless of what he wants us to believe about the politics of the matter, if we look at the facts, New Orleans was known to be a preventable disaster waiting to happen, and we let it happen anyway. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Right here: I'd also like to point out that you didn't refer to the "war crimes museum" but to the "American war crimes museum." As has been pointed out, neither Vietnam nor Iraq are entirely American actions. (And Vietnam was even less so than Iraq is.) Howdy Tom, I don't think there was anything in my logic that indicated that my country is squeaky clean. I think that you took a a specific and ran with it, while I simply addressed the specific alone. I'm a rational anarchist, and my right to swing stops at the end of your nose. I don't believe in manmade borders--people should live where they choose. If you embrace my philosophy, we've just put an end to war and the need for soldiers. But we don't live in a perfect world. If you think I support our continuing presence in Iraq, think twice. I did at first, I don't anymore, because our strategy and implementation is bad. But that's about my government, not about those who serve. And my post is about those who serve, not about my government. You must have missed the last thing I wrote: That's my point, and it is the entirety of my point. The rest is explanation and example (and for the examples, you can slot in any nation you choose). One concept that many people have trouble with is that the example is not the point of the argument, so they want to argue the example. I'm not willing to argue the example, Tom, and I don't think you disagree with the point. rl P.S. Those protestors at home did literally spit on returning soldiers. They called them "baby killers."
