  1. The incessant chatter of my office mates. Even if I close my door, I can STILL hear them. SHUTUP! SHUTUP! SHUTUP! God, I hate Monday...and Tuesday...and... rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  2. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1958336#1958336 If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  3. Aren't you just the charmer? Good job, Michele. If more parents dealt with children the way you dealt with these two, we would have more children growing up into useful, productive adults. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  4. Yeah, and on the rare occasions when they do bite, it doesn't hurt very much at all. It is bad for their teeth, however. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  5. I don't understand the common use (and who wants to be common?) of the word "got," when it is entirely superfluous. http://esl.about.com/cs/beginner/a/beg_havegot.htm That's not it. Edited to add: But you did make me laugh. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  6. Depends on the state, the type of corn and whether or not it's captive bred. In most places, you need a permit, but they are excellent snakes to keep. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  7. I think I'd prefer to go scare up some real sex rather than only write about it. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  8. Corn snake. It's beautiful. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  9. 41% (Yankee). Barely in the Yankee category. I was born in, and lived 41 years of my life in, New Jersey. But my mother's from Tennessee, so I guess she had an influence. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  10. One of the definitions of "pilot" is: The part of a tool, device, or machine that leads or guides the whole. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  11. Gotcha!! Indeed you did. Earlier today, I wrote a sentence that looked like word salad. Too many thoughts at once. Fortunately, I fixed that one before anyone saw it. I've got another mistake in this thread--construction--but no one caught it. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  12. An explanation of prescriptive and descriptive dictionaries. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  13. pre: - prefix meaning "before" meditate: - To reflect on; contemplate. To plan in the mind; intend nothing about legal or illegal. John, as a matter of etymology, you take the day, but all you've really done is show us the breakdown of a word into its two parts. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts, and all that, remember? As a legal concept, it's what I said it is. Worse yet, to use it in any other way is like reverse spin. If someone wants to say that he believes state-sanctioned killing is murder, then we can discuss that, but manipulating words is as much bullshit for the left as it is for the right and every political persuasion in between. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 14. shieeet, the USer is correct.... Correct, but losing the battle. Fortunately for me, the American Heritage Dictionary is a descriptive not prescriptive dictionary, and it's "Usage Panel" can kiss my grits. Note that "common usage" is just that: common. Who wants to be common? H.W. Fowler and Theodore M. Bernstein are spinning in their graves. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  15. I have a complaint. We're doing errors in writing here, but I have an error in speaking that drives me insane: Forte is pronounced "fort" not "fortay." I've had people correct my correct pronounciation of this word (even the English, who think they know everything), and it makes my eyeballs spin. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 16. But is there really anything wrong with selling drugs? I don't use drugs, but I object to drug laws wholeheartedly. Punish those who drive while under the influence, and I'm fine with it. Punish those who use it as an excuse to beat the shit out of a partner, and I'll applaud. Punish those who roll little old ladies on the street for their handbags, and you've accomplished something. Punish the real crimes--crimes against people. Don't punish the use or sale of drugs. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

  18. I am so impressed. I've seen people with landing gear land a lot worse than that. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  19. I once knew someone who used this as a sig line: The meaning of an apostrophe is not "Look out, here comes an "s"! If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  20. "Premeditated killing" implies "murder," which is defined as unlawful killing. By definition, it was not an unlawful killing. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  21. I'm going to remember that. Hopefully I'll never be dumb enough to do that again, but ya' never know... Walt It needs to be whole milk. Whole milk plain yogurt or sour cream works better. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  22. She apparently made an old man very happy in his final years. To my way of thinking, it would either take an iron will or genuine affection to do what she did. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  23. There's the "he's only 25 years old" (empathy) part. There's the "he knew what he was doing, and he knew what the consequences are" (responsibility) part. There's the "drug laws aren't working" part. And there's also the part about how the human brain is not fully developed as to risk assessment until it's around 25 years old. But it doesn't do much good to try to change the law, get around the law, after the law has been broken. I feel for him, I feel for his family, but with as many as have died under this law, what does it take for someone to understand that if you get caught smuggling drugs in Singepore, you will be put to death? In choosing the action, you choose the potential consequences--whether it's drug smuggling, driving fast, skydiving, or any other thing you do. It wasn't a premeditated killing, it was a logical consequence; he chose to take the risk and he lost. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

  25. I am in utter awe. A tablespoon. A whole tablespoon. I use a capsaicin nasal spray, and I take capsaicin capsules (100,000 Scoville Heat Units), and I use capsaicin creme on my skin, but for all that I would never.... Well, look...we used to have little competitions to see who could eat the most of it--a few drops at a time on a tortilla--but I don't think the idea of doing it straight from cutlery ever occurred to anyone. Didn't you read the warning on the bottle? Wow. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
