You do know that Cypreses don't even arm themselves until 1500 feet right? If the airplane only got to 1000 feet, your Cypres will not fire.

That sucks. I first met Jerry in the mid-90's at various CRW events.. Hard to imagine we won't be seeing him again... W

Tempo 120 ~8 jumps on it - lands easily, flies remarkably similar to a Lightning 113 :-) PD 143 Landed easily (and I was a rookie when I jumped this one.) 1 ride. PD 126 Landed easily just like a Lightning. 1 ride MicroRaven 120 ~6 rides - high flare point, helps to come in with extra speed. Dash-M 109 - stalled at my ears and I plowed in. 23' round - 1 ride - UGHHHHHH... And if you're buying a new reserve and want to sell this one cheap, contact me :-) I've got a spare container sitting around with no reserve and I need a cheap one. I've got enough rides on the MicroRavens that I'm comfortable with them.

It is definitely about knowing how to fly it though. Most people I know with MicroRavens have ones that were manufactured in the mid-1990's. Parachutes were different then.. I load my MicroRaven 120 at 1.33 and am comfortable landing it in any conditions. I do have 3000 jumps under small 7 cells though. If you try to land a 15 year old F111 7cell like you would a 2007 9-cell ZP, you won't have a good landing. MicroRaven's are definitely not my favorite canopy, but I'm completely comfortable landing them.

I jumped mine as recently as Sunday :-) I am about 160 out the door on a 120. It does stall high - I was trying to fly around in deep brakes to follow my gear - well I was trying to - and stalled it accidently probably half a dozen times. I have found on the MicroRavens, if I come in with a little extra front-risers on landing, it doesn't stall nearly as quickly. When I do that on mine, it lands fine. If I don't, its tricky.

I subscribe to the BBC daily news email (like CNN's.) I also subscribe to The Week - a FANTASTIC magazine that pulls in news articles from around the world about current events and its really interesting to read.

I wish I knew! Still haven't figured out why. I've had line twists before on this canopy and it was very docile.....

I stopped jumping ellipticals a few years back because I really hated the occasional spinning malfunction. A friend decided to help me out yesterday by packing for me. He did say he experimented a little and to let me know how it worked. The video here: http://www.skydivingmovies.com/ver2/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=6699 shows how that worked out! I was just truly amazed that a Triathalon - a nice docile 7-cell square - would do this!!!! I've had line twists before with nary an issue.. I did verify both brakes were stowed correctly when I found the canopy... Yee Haw!!!! I did buy my beer since it was the actual first malfunction I've ever had on a square! (my other 17 cutaways were either CRW wraps, round jumps, or spinning ellipticals :-)

Advice for an AFF Student RE: Early flare
faulknerwn replied to hechz's topic in Safety and Training
And to avoid an early flare, I always tell folks that if you see the ground rushing up at you, say 3 oh shits and then flare :-) I was told by a military instructor that the military puts their jump towers at 34 feet because that is the general altitude most people start getting "ground rush"... So if you expect that, its easier to wait and flare correctly... -
What would make you read the parachutist again?
faulknerwn replied to jtval's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I like the photo articles as well - as a person who's been flying video for a while, but just recently added a still camera, its interesting. I know I'm still fairly fuzzy on what settings to use when and where and all that... -
What would make you read the parachutist again?
faulknerwn replied to jtval's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I don't like the boogie articles unless its some big event (record, freefall convention etc). I LOVE the old-time articles - those are great. The new rigging articles are good for beginners. What might be an interesting idea would be to have an article comparing canopies of a similar class - Sabre 2/Pilot Triathalon/Spectre etc by someone who is not working for the manufacturer and has no bias. -
skydiving in the Army- Best and Worst Posts?
faulknerwn replied to hokiejmpr's topic in Events & Places to Jump
We only have a Cessna, but my dz is about 1/2 hour from Ft Hood (Skydive Temple.) No idea if they have a fire brigade though. -
Just remember to bring your case of beer for graduating :-) Good job.... :-) W

By the time I was 14 I was babysitting all the neighbors kids. By the time I was 16, I was under constant demand (cuz I had no life) and especially on New Years - I was babysitting other people's kids all night and making $100+ dollars! It was a sweet deal...

I've got probably 2200 jumps on Lightning 113's, and probably close another 2000 on Triathalon 99's. I'm pretty comfortable landing small 7-cells. PD's and Tempo's land great. My MicroRaven's are ok once I figured out how to land them (come in with a touch of speed.) The Dash-M 109 I sold after its first use - it stalled at my shoulders. That sucked...
-
And some canopies - like a certain 120 reserve I jumped once - stalled by the time I had pulled the toggles to this 5'1 girl's shoulders!!! Yowsa! W

He liked Cat better :-)

Well the group concensus this weekend was that she should be named Cat. I think I'll spell it Kat on her nametags tho :-) W

who else raised their prices?
faulknerwn replied to shermanator's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Its the price of gasoline - I know (don't remember the exact numbers) that when we refilled the fuel tanks last month it was considerably higher per gallon than it was in the summer... When an Otter load suddenly starts costing the dz $20-$40 more a load purely from gasoline prices, you can't expect them to eat it all.. Solve the worldwide issue of rising gas prices and maybe lift tickets will go down :-) -
I went up on a jump with my EOS this morning, and it was @^^#&*#^ cold (for Texas anyway). The pictures I took in the plane looked fine, but right before I got out, the bottom half of every photo shows up as solid black. Even on the ground, now every photo shows up with the bottom half black like the shutter is sticking. Any ideas? W

OK. Thanks for all the suggestions - keep em coming! My favorites so far are Sunshine, Shiner, Bock, Bark Bark, Ipup, Idog, and Ilab :-) Will have to contemplate..

Toggles has been overdone. Oops - here's the picture.
