USMC static-line with reversed 3-Rings
councilman24 replied to riggerrob's topic in Gear and Rigging
Putting a release on a release and CAN'T use what the army uses. Sounds about right. And I still can't figure out the advantage of having a spring push out a PC without a spring in a reserve. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE -

Does the release hardware on the locking loop do anything but release the three ring? Is it an automatic release of some sort? (water landing) It seems over engineered and overkill. Are marines using this system taught to cutaway for a malfunction? I assume not. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE -

Here is a photo showing the same configuration. http://media.dma.mil/2013/Dec/19/2000761221/600/400/0/131219-M-YG378-703.JPG More. Looks like T-11 assembly. http://www.combatreform.org/T-21.htm Scroll down. Looks like they have an updated release hardware to release the loop on the three ring. On photo has one open and the far one closed with a what looks like a tape release handle similar to an R-2. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE -

And again some manufactures choose to be silent on aad's. They neither "approve" nor "ban" specific AAD's and leave it to the owner and rigger to decide what they want to use or not use. PIA projects are only as successful as the volunteer(s) that take them on and as useful as the cooperation of various competitors. Concerning the MARs M2, I did like the things presented in their seminar at the last PIA Symposium. I liked the cutter design and.some of the other features. I'm still a supporter of routine testing, updating, and maintenance. But don't have an issue with someone choosing a MARs. I may buy one myself. This isn't the first time MARS tried to bring a product to the US. Ten or twelve years ago they displayed an AAD that required the rig to be specially designed for it. It was one small box that container the electronics, battery, and cutter. It had to be mounted at the reserve loop anchor site and the loop had to go through the box, IIRC about the size of a.pack of cigarettes or slightly larger. No manufacturers got on board with a compatible rig. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE

No AAD is "TSO'd". AADs are unregulated (almost) and have no mandated testing standard. Some manufacturers choose to 'approve or disapprove specific AADs in their rigs as part of the manufacturer's instructions which all US riggers must follow under federal law. Some manufacturers choose to.make no statement about any brand of AAD. It is unique that the FAR's mandate that an AAD must be maintained according to the AAD manufacturer's instructions even though there are no 'TSO' standards for them. As.to.the MARS specifically the lack of an adjustable firing altitude may be a negative. (Unless they've changed.) And frankly I don't know that I trust my life with any electronic device that has no maintenance or testing for 15 years. Too new to have much durability history although MARS as a company has been around for quite a while. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE

Only a good deal depending on auction results. And some are like new and may only need timing, or even just tension adjustment even though they're listed as unrepairable. Some are truly scrap. My impression are most are neglected but fixable. I got a quote for a shipping company to pickup and ship and it was about twice what I was willing to spend for the machine. I haven't been using it yet but putting on a BOC by spinning the whole rig through the machine will be cool. And I got it for about 1/4 what it's worth. If I get sail or tarp work I may move it to the garage. And I kind of used the Egyptian method. -

Nope, she's a CPA and needs a spread sheet to count, luckily. Sneaking a 144A305 into the basement AND getting the head on the table myself was tough. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE -

But which Chandler? The breakaway tables are kind of cool. Especially the frame supporting the machine. But free arm is cool too. Last time I bought a machine from GL pick up was 4 or 5 weeks after auction even though they say NMT 10 days. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE -
Use a "square" hole in the end of the axle like "Wink's" crank tool and put a torque wrench in it. But torque doesn't equate to pull force. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE

Everything old is new again. http://www.silverparachutes.com/ez-close-ratchet-for-parachute-riggers/ Allen's smaller footprint allows it to not bridge the sides of a javelin, wings, etc. A local rigger saw mine about 12 years ago and made his with a cut off ratchet like yours. Your wood working a little better. When I got mine from Allen a Korean comp. was showing a closer at the symposium. It was 18" or more high and much more complex. Designed for small women military riggers. I should them Allen's and you could see their shoulders sag and their faces droop. You can tear a rig apart with these. I don't let newbie riggers use it. You need some 'feel' for how hard your pulling. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE

Did you look or just guess? I don't know if this bag is split but could if it is they could have built the bag with hook facing in. Don't just check the grommets. Might be a sharp hot knifed corner or edge on some tape or reinforcing. Almost looks like dents from small gravel in the canopy. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE

Very good point, thank you. Though I expect I'd recover currency before I had a reserve ride. Do you win the lottery too? Since you can predict the future? Every time I jump expect a reserve ride. I'm always ready for one, but I don't expect it... So are you going to be ready with that too small reserve? I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE

Wonder where your getting the specified length. I can think of a couple of rigs that might have it in the manual or on the rig and it's probably in some new manuals that I haven't needed but for the most part I'd have to call the manufacturer to know what the spec length was. Up to about the far side of the d handle I don't have much grief. 1 or 2 inches is nothing. UNLESS it's an SOS system. Even then longer not an issue but extra length more critical. Bulk distribution problem for main canopy.
councilman24 replied to TommyBotten's topic in Gear and Rigging
Without hands on tough to help but you can pack the reserve with more bulk in the bottom of the free bag, filling those corners, with less in the ears and tapering the top more. Likely not really much to do about it. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE -
