  1. What the hell, I haven't bought a toy for at least, hmmm, a week? You have my order. There is a difference between line twists and a spinning canopy caused by line twists. I know it's too much to hope but people should know enough to get rid of the latter. Any way. Lets see. I still want a new Time Out. Now that was simple. Actually bought a used one not long ago. By the way no advertising in the forums. Expect to get kicked out to classifieds shortly. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  2. In spite of post above as an individual I'd support the website. Subscription, donation, go fund me, burn the database and sell it.. whatever might work. Your site and your uk 'competitor' are some of the most valuable resources available to riggers. Prepare a proposal to PIA and I'd be glad to present it as one member. I'm old for my age. 3. I looked at this last I was rigging committee chairman. Not hosting Phree's site but doing our own. There were several logistical and legal issues that would be hard to overcome. Also some members didn't want PIA to be another home for their information. They preferred that home to be their own website and we are an organization of our members. Also everything that PIA does needs volunteers to do it. I decided that if there were private individuals willing to do this it was not worth the substantial effort to duplicate the effort. May be a cop out but the reality of the situation. As one member I would be interested in considering supporting the Phree's effort in some way. This would be unlike any of our current projects. 5. Also called Phantom's. So had to learn to ask if it was a National Phantom Square or Round. Between kevlar bands, diaper changes and acid mesh testing (did anyone send in the report like you were supposed to?) my old Phantoms are mains. And I don't much like new Phantoms but I do them. Somewhere I have video from my helmet under a Phantom 24 in about 1985. To your question I still use 1 1/4 when needed. And there rubber bands not 'elastics' you damn Canuck. I'm old for my age. 6. I don't know Bill personally but it's pretty clear from the video that he was trying to say is "we didn't not stop because we didn't like the guy, we didn't not stop because we weren't interested in the guy, we didn't stop because life goes on". He just left out the 'not's' mangling the meaning. Different dropzones treat operation after a fatality differently. If it's a small dz and everyone was either involved in the student operation and investigation or everyone knew the deceased jumper yeah we stop. If you at a large commercial operation where you might have people from 5 countries on their skydiving vacation of the year or teams in training for competition they aren't going to want to lose a day. Continuing to provide airlift for those that want to jump is a business decision. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  7. IMHO it does invalidate the TSO as an alteration to the container system. The handles are no longer in the original pockets/velcro or anchored to the main lift web in the original configuration. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  8. At least they had a ground crew to cushion the fall. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  9. What struck me reading this, coming from a feet county and experience, it seems to me that an altimeter reading in 100's of meters, essentially 300ft resolution. is not precise enough. Especially with digital altimeters where you don't have analog needle between digits. I don't use a digital altimeter but certainly am used to thinking in increments one third the size of 100 meters. And 2000' vs 1800' makes a difference in an exit decision. Are all decision altitudes and altitude guidance taught and always given in whole 100's of meters (where meters are the unit of common use)? I recognize that 10 meters, around 30' may be to fine but I think I'd want a digital to read 1.15, 1.10, 1.05, 1.00, 0.95..... Thoughts from the rest of the world besides the U.S.? Do any digitals read as above in meters? Aside from that something needs to change. You were a 3 second longer search for the RC from dying. Almost another cutaway/no pull fatality. Perhaps a reason to use a french link (as we used to on students) on the rsl and a hook knife for the vary rare need to disconnect in the air. I've always thought this shackle (photo) might be a better choice. Have to push blue button to pull pin and separate sides. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  10. anyone that actually calls it a "Whopper burger" instead of a "Whopper" deserves to be ostracized from society Yeah but you might get a different definition if you don't ad the noun burger after Whopper. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  11. But don't ignore the fact that if it fires when it isn't supposed to, for instance climbing our of the aircraft, it can kill, you, everyone on the airplane, and people on the ground when the airplane crashes. It isn't only your ass on the line. Nobody cares that you are going to complete your emergency procedures. That's why above they said you shouldn't jump it without the aircraft owners permission and with other jumpers on the aircraft without them knowing the risk I'm old for my age. 15. In 1989 or so National redesigned the Phantom to leave acid mesh and multiple service bulletin stigma behind (my assumption). The new version are Phantom Aerostar. The have line attachment tapes line a ram air instead or lines directly sewn to the radial seams. There are other differences but that is the most obvious. And the are stamped Aerostar. These I would use. I would avoid the earlier ones that required a fifferent diaper, kevlar lateral tapes added for strength about 2/3 the way up the canopy, and acid mesh/ tensile testing. I relegate the old ones for use as mains. Other riggers disagree and think old Phantoms are fine. With those measurements it may be for a military c9. My 1988 butler seat, PN 102-151303, is 15" side to side, 13" fromt to back and 3 inches high. That's why we wanted the part number. This holds a NAA 26' Lopo. (original canopy) But even a military seat isn't 23 inches wide. Double check your measurements and your typing. But depending on what you really meant to type I think the Phantoms will be too small for container. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  16. Round the corners of your chest to streamline it, put an AAD pouch in it and market it to wingsuiters. We've got Poynter's on how to add d rings. And I'm only half kidding. Yeah yeah I know they won't want it on their chest but it's out of the burble. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  17. I recently came across some info that National Parachute says that they will not service any of their products after 15 yrs. After that, they say, it is up to the rigger to decide whether to continue to service them or not. Sounds like the best approach IMO. Jerry Baumchen And depending on who you talk to at Strong they won't service anything more than 20 years old. But that seems to be variable. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  18. Butler's have a published service life of 20 years. While this likely doesn't have the force of law (unless stated when approved) it is a consideration for some riggers. Condition is the more important issue. I just grounded two 19 year old PEPs because of substantial fading of the harness. Color isn't important but indicates significant sun exposure which weakens the webbing. I have a Butler seat from the about that time that I grounded 15 years ago, with the complete agreement of the owner that it was questionable. If your rig was used routinely for all of its 35 year life it may not be airworthy. 35 years for a PEP flown all those years is a long time. Many riggers unfortunately will pack anything. Before you spend too much time gathering other components consult your rigger. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  19. Media have been reporting this for months. Poll results have always been more positive for ACA, where they got their insurance AND subsidy than "Obamacare", passed by liberal dems and black President. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE

  22. As above noted 16 needles are really too small for E thread. While 18 are often listed I find 19 or 20 work well. A thinner needle is not the answer to this problem and may lead to other stitch issues. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE

  24. Has anybody ordered/used Global Sewing in the Netherlands to obtain parts for a Bernina 217n? As best I understand from the website and Jo Global supplies parts for the Bernina 217n (and sell new ones under their name). Would like to know if anyone in the U.S. has gotten parts from them and any issues with parts or purchase from Netherlands? Thanks I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  25. What criteria? Most newbies think every opening on my Sabre is a hard opening. To me they are normal openings and the openings from canopies like a Spectre are malfunctions that clear. Openings that break people like Truffer's? Openings that are harder than normal? Openings that break the canopy? Just not sure how to list something subjective like that. I'm old for my age.
