petition for exemption to the 120 day reserve repack cycle denied
HeatherB replied to jsaxton's topic in Gear and Rigging
Is the goal to keep things safer for the lowest common denominator? (people who don't take care of their gear at all) I'm all for 180-day cycles. It seems to work fine in other countries...are Americans that much lazier than skydivers from other countries? Maybe that's the big question, since we know that gear in good shape is fine to go 180 days. I'd only get a repack once a year if that was allowed. I take good care of my gear. I'm not afraid to ask a rigger about anything I'm not sure about. If I jumped at Eloy or Perris I'd be concerned about all that dust. Rigs seem to age much faster out there. Z-hills is nice and grassy though. . -
God, I love my Pilot. I'd have its babies if I could. (I'm not exactly sure what that means) But seriously...I jumped a Sabre 150 for my first few hundred jumps. It never slammed me, but it opened fast. After trying out other canopies, I realized that canopies can open softly! And you won't be sore after a weekend of jumping! Awesome! My random thoughts: 1. Any canopy can slam you if you fuck up the packing process. 2. Shit can happen, even with what seems like a reliable canopy and a normal packjob. 3. Certain canopies have a history of hard openings, off-heading openings, snively openings, soft openings, etc. Jumper reviews and first-hand accounts can be helpful. 4. Demo, demo, demo! If possible, jump the exact canopy you're buying before you hand over your money. This is where buying used can be really nice. But I'm only a 800-jump wonder, I'm no guru.

At any given time, there are at least several books on my night stand. I tend to read books over and over too. I try to rotate new ones into the mix. Currently: Broca's Brain (Carl Sagan) Contact (Carl Sagan) You Shall Know Our Velocity (Dave Eggers) Irish Fairy & Folk Tales (Yeats) Babylon Revisited and other stories (Fitzgerald) None of those are new to me...maybe I should make a trip to the bookstore.

What's going on with Skydive Las Vegas?

I don't mind the rumors, I have no relationship with that place...and they're amusing. PM sent regarding the jump number thing. -
What's going on with Skydive Las Vegas?
HeatherB replied to HeatherB's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Oh well, no info out there. I'm guessing it's because nobody really cares. It wasn't a boogie dz or one that catered to experienced jumpers. It still would be interesting to know if they closed due to legal problems, $ problems, the DZO just wanted to take a long vacation, etc. Oh, look: They offer "FREE ground training!" How generous! -
What's going on with Skydive Las Vegas?

He was only visiting Nevada. He's back home now and will probably go to one of the NJ or NY DZ's. I know Las Vegas is a tandem mill...I was just curious why it's closed. I'm the inquisitive type. -
What's going on with Skydive Las Vegas?

My brother's friend called to confirm a tandem reservation at Skydive Las Vegas and they told him they are "shut down, with no scheduled re-open date." Anyone know why? I did a search and I don't see anything on their website. -
lol. Not cynical, just baffled that people will lie about their jump numbers. If anything, I'd lie and say I have 50 jumps! Let people think I'm pretty good for a newbie!
-
Some people don't just update their jump numbers, they inflate them. C'mon people. Lying and putting in your profile that you have 1000 jumps is pretty lame. It's a small world and word travels fast. Anyhow, I update my logbook after each weekend. I update on dz.com whenever I think of it. I pretty much do it in increments of 50 or 100.

Did we run into one another in the packing tent? I talked to someone who came up to Z-hills from Fort Myers and was at Z-hills for the first time. I think that was on Saturday. Anyhow: 2:9:0 2 beautiful days at Z-hills. Best weather we've had in a while! 9 4-ways (or 10..I'm not sure) 0 beer owed

So many people to cheer for! Paraclete (b/c they seemed like really nice guys (and girl!) when I met them at Raeford a while back) Phugoid 8 (of course!) and in Intermediate: Cross Keys Traffic (because Paul Bertorelli is our IC) Good luck to everyone! :)

It looks like Fire has it!

Who is going to Nationals 2005 to compete?
HeatherB replied to VanillaSkyGirl's topic in The Bonfire
Still refreshing! Gave up at 7:00 and headed home. Nice round 11 for Open...that'd be fun to watch. :) -
It's not that I'm confident that I'll never forget to cock my PC, it's just that I check all that on the ground right before I gear up. I check everything...the window on my bridle, my 3-rings, risers, PC, both pins, my handles, etc. When I used to pay for packjobs, I always cocked my PC after laying it down, because I was afraid someone would forget that part. I'd uncollapse my slider too. Part of what pushed me to start packing for myself again, was that fear of not knowing what was done or not done to my rig. Trust me, I'm anal when it comes to my gear. edit to add: I rec'd a PM about this, and yes, I do check all my handles, 3-rings, chest strap, etc in addition to my main pin and PC again on the way to altitude, as everyone is getting ready. I do practice pulls on my cutaway and reserve handles as well. I don't think anyone who knows me would call me an unsafe jumper.

Black Magick's round 7 video is posted on omniskore! Gotta love the exit. Some great videos are posted....I'm getting nuttin' done at work! Waiting for Open's Round 10. I'm staying at work until this over because I'm a complete dork...and I have dial-up at home. -
I don't worry about having someone check whether or not my PC is cocked. It isn't going to randomly un-cock itself in the plane. I check my bridle routing and coverage, where the loop is around the pin, my PC, etc. I used to ask for people to check my gear, but nowadays I just check it myself. It's easier and there is more peace of mind.
-
Some people check their pins themselves. That is okay too. I will happily check another person's gear if they ask though. Glad you are okay!

Go Phugoid! Tied with Synchronicity at the moment. A couple of points lost yesterday to camera, but I'm sure they'll catch up today. I won't vouch for anything in his bio...except that it *is* all his fault.

I'd vote for Mig over Marty. Marty's "arms out, head down, death-stare theatrical bit" needs to be cut from his stage-act. You aren't Kurt Cobain, no matter how much you want to be him.

My friend and her family are fine as well!

De-stressing from this extremely busy work-week by jumping my ass off and hanging out with friends! (Classes on Saturday...jumping on Sunday and Monday. Whoever created this school's schedule needs to be shot).

Ugh. I figured it was flooded, but was hoping otherwise... I hope you hear from your aunt and uncle!! Still no word from my friend. But maybe they are at the hotel and they're okay. Venturing out seems like a really bad idea, so hopefully they have stayed put. *hugs*

Susie and Jordis both kicked ass tonight! A few of us at the DZ are addicted to the show. :) I didn't see the first few episodes because I thought it'd be a lame-o American Idol type thing, lol.

Does anyone know if Metairie is flooded? I can't find anything...
