What? Thats the new 40 foot long drogue bridle. If you made a straight line line of the bridle it could make it to the top of the canopy in the graphic.

I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advise, but here is what I logically see in this. I am not trying to give an opinion, I am just trying to show the logic. 1. If the original dealer is not trying to double dip after a tax write-off or an insurance claim, a compromise should be worked out between the dealer and Eric. Eric should have to pay the full amount lost by the dealer and not the retail price. The difference between the wholesale and retail price needs to be considered. There should be no profit made by the dealer from Eric. Consideration should be made toward the depreciation of the gear when Eric purchased it. If the dealer did get the gear back as soon as Eric first purchased it, he could not sell it for the new price. 2. If the dealer did make a tax write-off or an insurance claim, and gets the gear back, then he has a moral obligation to either return the insurance money or pay the tax /else again work on a compromise with Eric to pay the difference in the gear cost. This amount to pay should consider: Depreciation of the gear when Eric purchased it Markup from wholesale price Any benefit to the dealer involving a tax write-off or insurance claim Something on the order of a 50/50 compromise considering the suggested adjustments to the total amount of money involved above needs to be considered. Furthermore, the part of any possible negligence on the dealer's part needs to be considered. The dealer should have to eat some of the money if there was neglience. These two points should be considered in possibly shifting the 50/50 compromise to Eric's favor. Did the dealer check an ID? Why when Eric checked the stolen database did he not find this gear? Should have the dealer renewed the listing? One way or another, Eric should not have to eat the whole amount. If Eric simply gave the gear back to the dealer, the dealer could then sell it. Eric, then would have nothing and the dealer something. There is something wrong with that.

airport security and "swabbing" rigs

I'm pretty sure that one of the things that the machine is looking for is nitrates. One of the ingredients of gun powder is potassium nitrate. I would bet that if gun powder somehow contacted you rig, it would come up positive on the machine. I think the right thing to do would be to wash your hands after shoothing, handling ammunition or cleaning your firearms, before you touch your rig. Also, keep gun stuff away from your rig, ammunition or cleaning swabs/rags. Also, consider contamination if you put this stuff in a trunk of a car. Residue in the trunk can cause cross contamination. -
The term I think that you are really looking for is called "Conservation of Angular Momentum". You can use a couple of analogies: 1. Think of the canopy and jumper as a clock pendulum. If you slide the pendulum weight up the rod, the pendulum will swing faster. This is the same as having shorter lines on a smaller canopy that affects the Pitch angle. 2. Think of an ice skater that trys to spin in place. They have to draw in their arms to spin fast. They are moving in mass toward the center of the spin axis. This causes the rotation to speed up. This is the same as having line twists on a small canopy with short lines. Your body is closer to the canopy, which puts most of the mass closer to the central axis. This again causes the rapid as opposed to slower spinning. Correct me it I am wrong: The OP was asking if there was a specific canopy size where twists causes bad spinning. I would say that there is no specific point of canopy size where this goes from acceptable to bad. I am sure that this has to do with the weight of the jumper (more or less mass) and what the tolerance level of the jumper is.

I jump at Elsinore and have jumped with Ben back in June. I recently was on a 6-way tracking dive, where the organizer wanted us to do a barrel roll before deploying. Several months ago, another organizer there, wanted us to do a barrel roll before deployment. It was long ago enough where I can't say for sure what type of jump it was. I do think it may have been a RW jump. I will not name people here because it is too easy for people to take something out of context and twist the words around to make somebody look bad. -

Its a Small World. It is nice to see your post here after being there "as an extra". I was there last saturday. Were you the one that they made the announcement for near the end of the day? It was funny to hear everybody yell BEER! Be sure to come out for Excel. You will learn a lot, get good experience, and have fun. Don't go off on 100 solos now Jeff

Jump Prices Lowering With Fuel Prices?

Here is a link the spot prices for diesel and Jet A at various places provided by the US energy information administration. These prices do not include tax and delivery from the refinery. Keep in mind that Diesel has much more tax applied than Jet A. You can see that the price at the refinery is almost the same for Diesel and Jet Fuel. If the price for Jet A is still $4+ then the company making the delivery to the DZ is adding one hell of a markup. http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/pet_pri_spt_s1_m.htm This link shows the monthly averages. It does not yet reflect the drop that we have had in Nov. You can look at daily or weekly prices by selecting a different setting on that page. The prices shown are in cents per gallon. -
There is something wrong with that 100GW number. I believe that it assumes that you are not using deep drilling. That is just taking the "low hanging fruit" There are studies that show that all of our power needs can be provided from geothermal sources. Solar won't ever get to be more than 10-15% of generation, not only because of the cost, but also because solar can't generate 24 hours a day. Many are working on trying to store energy from a solar array, but that will only add to the cost. The problem why solar and wind can't work is not really an engineering problem. Everything that people want to do with solar and wind can be done. The real problem is of economics and finding a balance between the cost of a power plant and how much people can pay for power. If we went right now and converted all of our generation to solar, power rates would have to go up huge amounts. Something like 20X

You want to know why fusion has not gone anywhere? PORK BARREL Any fusion research that does not follow the Status Quo at the DOE gets shot down. This pretty much means anything outside of a Tokamak. There are a lot of jobs that depend on these "Nuclear Cathedrals". The recent history of Tokamak plants is a total joke. Look at the ITER that is being built in France. The project is so stretched out in time that many of the people involved in the design and construction will be retired before it starts up. So calling them a "Nuclear Cathedral" is not a stretch. Then to make it worse, the ITER is not designed to extract any energy from the unit. So it is still another lab project. The next big Tokamak that they want to build will (maybe) generate some power. They won't start building this for another 20-30 years! So how about thinking outside the box of Tokamaks? Look at this: http://www.emc2fusion.org/ and the presentation video. The politicians that get up on the soapbox and blab about solar and wind being the future of our energy supply is just following the rest of the herd. What I don't like is that dumb asses like McCain and Obama, don't know squat about Geothermal power plants. If they did, they would drop all of the BS pork barrel spending on Wind and Solar. They should spend some money on funding deep drilling projects to help advance geothermal engineering. You all should at least read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geothermal_power According to the article, there are 3,979 MW worth of geothermal plants being worked on right now. and this:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geothermal_energy_in_the_United_States With improved deep drilling technology, that 3,979 MW will be a small fraction of the total potential. Besides the pork barrel aspect, I also think that solar and wind are being promoted because they are glamorous to the avarage person.

For all the people who are worried about what this may cause, I suggest that you all watch the video. The NTSB seems to be frustrated with how simple mistakes are costing lives. Many of these mistakes cost little or nothing to prevent. Such as checking for enough fuel before flight, proper storage and handling of fuel, and pilot training specific for skydiving operations. We should also note that the NTSB recognizes the USPA as an authority to work with the FAA to make recommendations to improve safety. This will prevent the over-regulation that we are all afraid of. The part of their recommendations that I have a problem with is saying that operators must follow the TBO recommendations for engines. This is where it gets expensive. I have a problem with blanket orders like this because it does not account for operators who operate and maintain their equipment carefully. It puts them in the same category as those who abuse their equipment. This is once again a damm good thing that the NTSB recognizes the USPA. The NTSB recommends that the USPA make recommendations for how to improve maintenance of skydiving aircraft.

"I did not hear the NTSB conclude with any conviction that restraints were "not used" but rather that they had failed because they were single point restraints attached to a side bar rail vs. double restraints or single restraints bolted to the floor." In regard to the above comment, when Cathy Gagne was giving the presentation under "Survival Factors", she described the condition of the seatbelt system, post accident. This was at 1:35:20 during the meeting. If the two people that were said to not be wearing seat belts in the accident, really were, then they would have found broken components. I do not remember hearing any mention of broken seatbelt parts during their presentations. Because of the lack of broken seatbelt parts, that is probably why the NTSB concluded that the two were not wearing seatbelts. Could it have been that they had been considering bailing out, even at the low altitude that they were at, and disconnected their seatbelts? This could be a possible explaination as to why these people who normally wore their belts were said not to be.
