Skydiving camaraderie at the DZ?
Chubba replied to npgraphicdesign's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
That's what I was going to get but my AFFI's told me to buy VB. VB dropzone in QLD? Who would have thought :) -

My first AFF skydive this Saturday.
Chubba replied to npgraphicdesign's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
LOL you got to watch out for that, follow the diveflow EXACTLY as you arranged on the ground. My AFF 5 involved 2 x 360 turns (one right and one left)... I finished my 2 turns and docks by 6000ft so I thought I could rip a REALLY quick 360 prior to waving off and deploying. My AFFI thought I went into a spin and tackled me Congrats on your first AFF jump, it only gets better and better -
Looking to skydive for first time.. possible at 300lbs?
Chubba replied to timmerk's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
There was a thread a few weeks ago about the same situation, one of the experienced posters (maybe a mod?) helped the larger jumper (280lbs) out via PM/email. I think the general consensus was that it's got more risk but it IS possible. -
That definitely wouldn't go down too well. I remember doing the practice climbouts in the Cessna 182 and the final command is "ARCH" as you let go. I swung my arms back and smacked the AFFI with my altimeter straight in the face.
-
+100 My AFF1 somebody got out of a Cessna 182 @ 3.5k for a hop n pop... nice one, way to make me shit my pants. I must admit though, it's extremely cool hearing that "woosh" sound when people exit, but I much prefer (as with my AFF6, was by the door/pilot) going first.
-
You people got it backwards... as the altitude climbs so does my anxiety. When they open that door on the little Cessna 182 and that wind is sounding like a hurricane my heart goes into overdrive.

Any help would be great, a few ????
Chubba replied to DeadWeight's topic in Introductions and Greets
Welcome to DZ.com :) My advice, do your FJC (first jump course) and AFF 1 and make an educated decision from there... definitely the best way is to jump (no pun intended) straight into it. As for BASE, put it out of your mind for the time being IMO. I started AFF purely for BASE (after all, wouldn't jumping out of a plane get boring after a while?) and what I discovered is that skydiving is an extremely rich and varied sport that has a lot (understatement) to offer... BASE is the last thing on my mind now. Cost? A LOT, a freakin lot -
Skydiving feels exactly like public speaking to me. I'm not going to shit my pants or faint, but I feel very nervous and uncomfortable, pretty much like I don't want to be doing it. Why do I force myself to do something that makes me feel this way? No idea... but I keep coming back. It's getting easier now though (done AFF6) and hoping it gradually dissapears.
-
+1 I'm beyond generous with the brews, I haven't even finished my AFF and I've shouted multiple cartons. I'm just thinking ahead, it pays to keep the instructors/skygods and especially the CI/DZO happy because ultimately he will play a large part in my skydiving career. The benefits are already showing

Shouldn't we Know more about our Gear?
Chubba replied to fpritchett64's topic in Safety and Training
Indeed, but you can't have the best of both worlds... both have there pro's and con's. I guess no teaching method is perfect? -
Shouldn't we Know more about our Gear?
Chubba replied to fpritchett64's topic in Safety and Training
That's my understanding, that is does nothing but we're taught in our EP's to pull it in order because when we get off the student rigs that's how a regular rig is setup. Stupid? I don't think so, just look at the fatality in the incident thread possibly caused by going straight for the silver. When I get off this rig, I will pull the handles in order everytime, I couldn't imagine the complications if I spent all my student jumps thinking "go straight for silver, straight for silver", I might end up dead like the fatality mentioned. I was told it does nothing but it placed there to reinforce good habits in EP's because once I'm off the student rig it WILL cutaway. I would say that's exactly the case, it's what the CI/DZO told me. -

Chubba replied to fpritchett64's topic in Safety and Training
I assume that's directed at me. I got a few PM's in regards to that and apparently not being explained the mechanics of the EP's is pretty standard as not to overload the student. I know at AFF 7 now I should be enquiring about it but I'm glad I wasn't expected to know anything about it on my FJC, just that I have handles I pull and proceedures if something goes wrong. Just FYI I was explained in my FJC what a cutaway handle does and what the reserve handle does "on a sports rig" and how an RSL works. I was just confused as to how my student rig worked considering the cutaway was a dummy. -
I reckon! I literally was in shock the other day when the pilot came up to me after my AFF 5/6 jumps and said "how did your jump go?" and we chatted about skydiving.

Tipping in Australia is just... well, VERY odd... I would nearly find it insulting. I bought a carton of VB ($35) for my AFF1 instructors and we sat around a round table having 2 - 3 beers each (along with a few skygods) and everyone was happy... plenty of fun conversations followed. Come my AFF graduation, I will buy a carton of beer for the dropzone and a carton/bottle for my instructor (still got to ask my AFF instructor what he drinks, he's been with me from stage 2 - 6 so far and I'm assuming he will see me through) and a bottle of scotch (Glen fidditch 12 year, sussed it out) for my chief instructor/DZO. It pays to be generous in your skydiving career, but handing money over is very impersonal, paying (gifting) in a carton of their favourite beer or in a bottle of their favourite spirits is well and truely enough IMO.
-
I just did 5 + 6 today also, smiled the entire freefall, was loose and relaxed... insane fun, I think we're addicted now

/head explodes edit: Wait, so it automatically fires higher then 750ft on all occasions? It just assumes your PC is flapping around in your burble? I'm REALLY confused.

How far do you drive to the DZ each weekend??
Chubba replied to partyboy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
20 minutes via highway. Originally the only 2 dropzones I could find were 3 hours away each... I actually booked my AFF1 and then 3 days before the jump found a little single Cessna 182 dropzone that only does students/fun jumpers (no tandems). Rang up the chief instructor and his attitude immediately grabbed me (within 5 minutes he was telling me if I come to jump at his dropzone I will leave my girlfriend and sell my car -
My first AFF skydive this Saturday.
Chubba replied to npgraphicdesign's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Remember to practice everything on the ground with 110% effort, be strong, be loud, be confident. Whatever you do down there translates to what happens in the air, I learnt that the hard way getting complacent on deployments among other things. You may look like a tryhard screaming out things like "WAVE OFF, HEAD BACK, REACH, PULL!" when you're standing in the hangar, but when you scream it to yourself in the air you WILL do it properly. -
Make sure you understand and feel confident in landing the canopy by yourself and don't rely on the radio, because in my AFF2 jump the radio malfuctioned and I was stuffed... I was waiting till later on (5 - 6+etc) before I started considering landing by myself. Long story short, downwind 1.2km off dropzone in somebodies backyard. My AFFI's did explain it all to me, but admist all the emergency proceedures and your first exit/freefall, landing was the last thing on my mind and I would just grab my toggles/float and wait for the instructor to say "alright, now if you can hear me, pull down your right toggle" and guide me 110%... bad move

Want to skydive, having trouble finding DZ
Chubba replied to B1029384756's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Probably correct in the "intermediate" sense... but for AFF I am jumping a 270 canopy @ 130 exit weight (I weigh 110 - 115). In my 5 jumps I have landed down wind 1.2km off dropzone in somebodies yard into an extreme PLF (jump 2) and on jump 4 I dislocated my shoulder from a hard spinning opening. Skydiving isn't always smooth, jumping at a 1:1 on your AFF's when you're inexperienced would be very suss IMO, but then again I'm only a new student jumper. -
Want to skydive, having trouble finding DZ
Chubba replied to B1029384756's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
If you're longterm goal is something as insanely challenging as Wingsuit BASE, losing a 60 pounds would be a walk in the park in the scheme of things... sorry for being blunt but your attitude is soo negative... "how can I get around the restrictions" rather then "I got a goal, I will lose weight to reach that goal". -
Anyone Ever Saved By Another Skydiver In FF?
Chubba replied to SkyHigh04's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Woah, really intense thread... really gives some backing to the statement "I will go to the dirt for you". 10 thumbs up from me. -
I second the ibuprofen for any type of inflammatory pain, that stuff works miracles. I've sprained my left ankle at least a dozen times and it definetely helps a lot.
