re: HMA... Mel, Our team guys get 1000+ jumps on their HMA linesets in ELOY,ARIZONA. (Home of UVa and UVb!) The UV/HMA stories have not been proven by anyone and I do believe that our actual experience dispells the myth. But Back to the X-VX/X-FX Mod.... These mods do NOT make the canopies a Xaos. The airfoils are entirely different. The purpose was to help some of our previous customers who had purchased Fx's and Vx's from us enjoy the evolution of crossbrace without having to replace a canopy which still has long fabric life remaining. I.E. a cheap way to improve the characteristics of their current canopy at a very reasonable cost. Chris Precision

You can demo next week at both Stupino and Kolomna... And you might want to consider the Fusion or Nitron also... I'll have demos of both when I visit the dzs next week... (Red Star Boogie)... Also Kolla From PD and Aubrey from Aerodyne will be there with Sabre2 and Pilot Demos. WoooHOOO... just about a week, and Russia here we come! Chris Precision

Wet canopy at a pond swoop comp
GroundZero replied to CanEHdian's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Agreed ... The weave will draw together, when left to dry... but the opening shock redistributes the fibers, (Stretches the weave back). I think the best advice for anyone with a wet canopy is to drain, pack, jump (and as my shampoo bottle says... repeat!) Cheers Brian! Chris -
Wet canopy at a pond swoop comp
GroundZero replied to CanEHdian's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
A wet canopy is not a concern if it's dried soon after and preferably by a deployment and flight. Water does not cause synthetic tapes to shrink. (Heat alone causes nylon to shrink, i.e a wet canopy stored in a hot trunk can shrink.) We had this problem during the days of cotton and other natural tapes. Today it is not a problem with nylon. With respect to lines, all wet lines and fabric, natural or synthetic will attract dirt and dirt causes wear. Go jump it to dry it. If you get your stuff wet, drain the water, air for a short time and take it right back up for a hop-n-pop, the flight will dry it in the safest manner. Chris -
How do you tell if the closing loop is too tight?
GroundZero replied to Ruffles's topic in Gear and Rigging
You can tell if it's too tight when you close if you touch the pin to the loop under tension and the loop breaks with so much force that you backloop into the wall... Anything shy of that and it'll work fine (at terminal with even a fair PC...) Chris -
What's the weather in May (21-27th) I'll be visiting both Stupino and Kolomna... Chris

It is not necessary to even use a bridal extension. Simply pull the ring out to the side of the packjob far enuf to move it all up to the bag grommet and no problems... see... http://precision.aero/extreme_pack.htm While you see an extension in the pictures, simply do the same with the attach ring (meaning pulling it out further) then carry the ring to the top of the canopy to meet the bag grommet... and there ya go. Chris

I've always packed for myself... too cheap and poor to pay for something so easy and quick to do... What's next, we pay people to jump for us and then, since we paid, we have the first right to log 'em. Skydiving has turned pretty country club, I'm new to BASE but it seems far purer than typical skydiving today. I only hope we don't see this follow skydiving... I would pay someone to carry my lazy ass up the hill every time... (OY!) But the market will drive supply... so I guess as demand exists, supply will follow. Chris

I jump my X-21 88 in a Javelin TJN... fits nicely... Typically a x-brace equal a "conventional" construction canopy two sizes larger (i.e. 88...then 98...then 108 ... I had a 120 nine cell regular canopy in there before... also an easy fit. Chris Precision

Very well said.... (now get a haircut!) hehehe Chris

Oh... you can have a local rigger build them too... the HMA lines will still be the correct length to use as a pattern. If 400 lb dacron is not available, he can use 525 lb (more readily available). With Dacron, we use "cat'seyes" instead of loops, as they will pass through the guide ring smoother. Hope this helps, Chris
-
Gary, Yes we can provide the lower control lines. And they are constructed of 400lb. dacron. Price is $40 plus shipping. They can be changed in the field as no sewing/bartacking is required, simply remove the old ones and loop the new ones onto the upper control lines. (Please forward previous emails directly to chris@NOSPAMprecision.net, remove nospam, I am wondering where the email communication failed, thanks!) Chris

Ok Johnny... I can sit here and read this for so long, then have to respond. First you would probably enjoy a history lesson. First, lets talk about licenses and such. The patent for crossbraced technology belongs to PD, albeit for the Excalibur of years past, it is intellectual property and Precision (not Icarus, mind you) has agreed to pay royalties for the rights to build it. We agreed to pay royalties when we met Paul Martyn (JYRO) of New Zealand Aerosports and began building his EXTreme (and paying royalties to PD for each canopy built). Did you know that Icarus is not paying PD for the intellectual property rights to crossbrace technology and imports into the USA? That agreement is between PD and Precision. And we struggle to pay the additional cost for each canopy built, but we will as we sincerely respect the designer's ideas. While we were involved with the original EXTreme, we found a problem with it... in-house we called it the "flik-flik"... the canopy had a weird trait of wanting to repack itself. Jyro decided the pressurization problem would be fixed by cutting the little triangles in the center (closed) part of the tri-cell. Hence the EXTreme FX. Yes we were involved deeply in the development (spent very much money) on fixing some quirks with the design. (We since spent much effort to discover the real problem...) When we received the first VX files and began jumping them, we were getting pounded on openings and had huge problems with tail flutter. I made so many changes to line trim during the early VX days that i named the final lineset (yes MY lineset!) the VX C-2.3-b lineset... (I just looked on my backup and found 17 different linesets for the VX, the final being mine.) A "marketing manager" for Icarus made a decision to release the canopy against Precision's wishes, (specifically me, Chris Martin, Beezy Shaw and George Galloway). We felt that development was not complete. The canopy went to market. I was pissed! That day, after lunch with the "marketing manager", his wife, Jyro and a few others from Icarus, (they were celebrating the long awaited release), I returned to my desk and began working on the correct canopy. (And you do know that Precision started Icarus as our marketing company and even hired the "marketing manager"?) We spent over 2 years refining our canopy. I urge anyone to dissect the canopy. Notice the ribs are different, as are the surfaces. The continuous lines and use of HMA were part of our continuing education provided by the late (and great) canopy designer Klaus Schenk. The use of brass grommets... I have to give (again, the late) Dave credit with his controversial, but correct, slider rebound theory. The only part that we can take complete credit for is the absolute lack of publicity until we had a complete project. We made that mistake earlier and will never do it again. From that date forward, we will never advertise a canopy until it is complete in R&D and ready to market... just saw another manufacturer make that mistake recently. I feel comfortable saying that our Xaos is far superior to the competition's canopies... I'm not a wuffo... over 1500 jumps on EXTremes, 400+ on Velocities (sponsored too! Don't tell Bill Coe that, hehehe!) and close to 1800 on final version Xaos's. The internet is a great resource for information, but when I hear some young skydiver bark statements like you have, I must respond! Quit repeating the thoughts (sales-pitches) of others and speak your own thoughts. Someday you will speak from your own experience, in the meantime, you sound like a taperecorder. Jump more, experience the difference. I look forward to meeting you in person. We have much to discuss. I am always open to conversation with any jumper, we are family and need to be open. I have spelled out some inside information, but it is important for all jumpers to know. Now go jump our canopies. And with some experience, I task you to report back to this forum. And with your previous posts... I'll leave you to edit them as you feel appropriate.
