Oh, I understand your point...I was there before. Of course you'll never understand if you keep entertaining these strawmen about christianity. The Amish are christians...do you see how they could be insulted by that...especially the more sensitive ones that get insulted by reflectors? How about a responsible homeowner who actually paid off his mortgage in full? What does he get? He gets a home that is now worth far less than it was when he bought it thanks to a very few who got fabulously wealthy from the "financial instruments" they created to bilk the American people. It's all in one's prespective... It's quite possible that I've lived a better life than you but still consider it fucked up for reasons you'd never consider. Do you really think that the Amish believe they fucked up their lives? I don't think so...yet they are still christian. I'm pretty sure that if they saw our lives they would consider our lives fucked up if they had to judge. I highly doubt that they are close to perfection. Amish sects have been involved in drug dealing, bootlegging, and other crimes. Some sects allow alcohol. Some years back, an Amish man, who was clearly intoxicated, was allowed to do a tandem at a DZ in this area. I was there. They TM is a good friend of mine. Even though I, and a few others, raised an objection to the jump, it happened anyways. Years ago, when I smoked pot, the Amish were the ones to get it from in PA.. Often saw them in bars outside of Harrisburg. I think they are no different than anyone else. You'll find good and bad in all sectors of society the world over. I guess I can't argue with that. I'll admit that I'm ignorant when it come to the Amish...That's kinda why I want to experience the lifestyle for myself. I'm known to just go off and do stuff like that. I found it ironic that you are against insulting them by forcing them to use reflectors for public safety, but are willing to insult someone directly because of their religion. +1 Walking the walk doesn't necessarily mean that you lead a perfect life, and though I think the Amish sin everyday in their own way, they come pretty close to prefection. Us christians in the "real world" fall way too many times...no doubt about that. That's why I understand the Amish lifestyle has to be the way it is. They are raised in a household that gives a solid foundation. They are sheltered from the negative influences from the outside world thus limiting the temptation to experience the lie and become even more corrupted an held captive by their carnality. But there are many Amish teens that run away to Amish havens for "escapees." They ditch the garbs, grab a beer, light up a smoke and peal out in a sports car...Can you imagine the excitement? But many of them see that the outside world isn't what it's all cracked up to be...they see it for what it is and many return home. Some want to visit their families but are cutt off because they're unwilling to repent from that lifestyle and return permanantly, so all communication is cutt off. Some are just become to wrapped up in the outside world and though they would like to go home, they won't or feel as though they can't, while others just go off and lead a "normal" life. There are some amish people about an hour away from where I'm at right now. Everytime I see them I have this desire to stay with them and experience their lifestyle...I think it would be refreshing, but I have some concerns... First,, if they were to accept me, I wouldn't wanna just waltz on in their and start stinkin' up the place, ya know. Second, Christ Prayed: My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. To me it seems as though they are santifying themselves by seclusion and I'm not so sure that's inline with scripture or who I want to be. There is pleasure in over comming the world when it's comming at you from every direction and that's what I think this is all about. I think I would miss it and wouldn't be able to stop thinking about all the other lost people who would love to come along for the ride. Christ called us to spread the word and he warned that they'll have us for it. I'm not saying that the Amish don't evangelize, I just don't know...perhaps they are a witness simply yy the cedible lifestyle they lead....I like that. There are many christians that don't impose their belief on others. The last thing I would want to do is force anybody to believe as I do...what's the point of having a bunch of base converts? When I was on the fence and then and atheist, people would come up to me and evangelize. I never felt once like they were imposing their beliefs on me. Sometimes I would ask questions...sometimes I would just listen and say, I'm all set man...thanks. Sometimes I would mock them. ...but years later it's like what they said all of a sudden made sense. That seed had finally sprouted and it saved my life.
