A bonfire of guns is just a bunch of wood and steel, but look at the nations that have confiscated and destroyed guns: Nazi Germany, North Korea, China, Venezuela. Those aren't exactly beacons of freedom, prosperity and human rights. So the idea of burning the guns, just like the KKK cross, symbolizes something far worse.

When guns are banned the criminals still get them anyway, through a black market, theft, or whatever. So what this edict will do is take guns away only from the law-abiding who are the victims of criminals. And where does that leave the honest citizens of Venezuela?
