Honestly, I really have never kept track of what USPA does/is supposed to do on the "protect skydiving" front. I value the educational and safety programs and efforts, and I love the magazine. I never got into the politics of it, or who's on the board, stuff like that, and I'm glad. So I am not qualified to say, really, whether it is well-run, poorly run, horribly run... But I am glad it exists and I would never for a moment question whether it should exist. To me, the fact that it should is beyond doubt. Spirits fly on dangerous missions Imaginations on fire

When I walked out of "Signs," I was thinking that it had been relatively entertaining, but FUCKING STUPID. Let me get this straight: - Aliens come from interstellar space - They have the technology to pilot starships to get here - They need, for some reason, to guide each other using CROP CIRCLES (no GPS, I guess) - The decided to invade a planet that is FILLED with WATER, even though water is LETHAL to them?! Even if they could stay away from bodies of water (unlikely) what the fuck were they going to do about RAIN/HUMIDITY?! They came from some across-space distance, but didn't know that much about the planet they were journeying to?! Fuckin' stupid. And the same goes for anyone who would write such a plot but not think of this being a plot-killer. Spirits fly on dangerous missions Imaginations on fire

Plants have been creating chemicals for millions of years to ward off animals...some of the very best toxins in the world are derived from plants. All of yall better go out and talk nicely to your trees now...just in case. ...Just don't hug them--or we ultra-right-wingers will loathe you! Spirits fly on dangerous missions Imaginations on fire

Yes, I guess I'm a bit wordy and you stated it just as well. I guess I'm still a bit bummed that I wasted all the time watching such a stupid movie. At least I got my money's worth with the next 4 movies I saw that day. Although The Strangers was just about equally as stupid. Are you saying that you sneaked into more movies?! Thief!! No, seriously, it's the goddamned theaters that are the thieves. I'm old enough to remember when an adult ticket was $4.50 and a child was $2.50, and there were $.99 theaters all over the place. Now that's over and done with. Hey, was The Strangers the one about some weird family that invades the home of some other family? Wearing weird masks and shit? What was the plot of that one? If you must watch a Marky Wahlberg movie, make it Shooter. Seriously, he's a good actor, but in The Happening, he seems to have simply forgotten how to act temporarily. Spirits fly on dangerous missions Imaginations on fire

It had promise as a preview -- seemed really creepy -- and then was a TOTAL LETDOWN in the theater. The underlying premise turned out to be totally fucking stupid. Spirits fly on dangerous missions Imaginations on fire

"Without USPA the local, state and federal authorities would regulate us to death." Just the same as what would happen without an AOPA or an NRA or an ACLU. Who is so foolish to believe that we'd be fine without watchdogs and mouthpieces to represent us to the bureaucracies in government, and the petty dictators at all levels? WE SEE IT HAPPEN EVEN WITH THE WATCHDOGS! How can anyone believe we'd be fine without them?! Spirits fly on dangerous missions Imaginations on fire

I don't like it when anyone does it. Did I ever proclaim support for the ones you mentioned? It freaks me out because this black preacher has a follower of 20 years who might become our PRESIDENT. And this man did not think to disavow the HATRED that his PREACHER spewed until he was cornered into doing so. Spirits fly on dangerous missions Imaginations on fire

It's not all that surprising. White Republicans do not really have a history of rioting when political or judicial events don't go their way. Other demographics, well, do. Spirits fly on dangerous missions Imaginations on fire

Not when Fox is running Cheers and South Park!

Sorry, there's something tan and fleshy-looking in the top center that (god help me) made me think of Hannibal Lecter butchering a vagina and serving it in soup. (That's not an appealing thought no matter how much one likes to eat pussy.) Spirits fly on dangerous missions Imaginations on fire

Heh--probably from the Mexicans who know their products will be sold to AMERICANS! I stick to hot dogs that are understood to be made with quality ingredients: Boar's Head, Hebrew National, and I'll dip down as far as Nathan's and Sabrett. (I love the Sabrett ones that snap--"natural casing franks." It's like eating meat wrapped in a lambskin condom! Well, doesn't it kind of just demonstrate that California feels its citizens are plenty keen on doing the right thing ... as long as someone else pays for it? Spirits fly on dangerous missions Imaginations on fire

Do you plan to see "Watchmen" when it comes out?
birdlike replied to birdlike's topic in The Bonfire
I used to collect and read Marvel Comics, and never got into DC, or others. (I particularly did not like DC comics for a variety of reasons.) Anyway, now there are trailers out for "Watchmen," which has roots in DC comics. The graphic novel, made from a series of 12 comics, is considered groundbreaking and defined the genre of graphic novels. (Read about it here This is where I learned pretty much all I know about it, too.) I saw the trailers and shortly after that I bought the graphic novel at a local comic shop. I haven't read the entire thing, but skimmed the first 30 pages or so. (I was in the middle of a novel when I got it.) I'll probably read it when I go away next week. It'll be a good time-passer on my flight to NY. So, are you interested in this comic or movie? If you are an old reader of the comic, what did you think of it? And what do you think of the potential for it to be a decent movie? Are you looking forward to it? Spirits fly on dangerous missions Imaginations on fire -
Heh. No, I do that a lot with movies on DVD. I'll take breaks to tie knots, make and eat food, fold laundry, all kindsa stuff. It's not a reflection on the movie. ...Well, I've finished it, now, and I admit that it did change a bit in tone from one part to the next (by the end, anyway) and became just a bit more "Hollywood" by the last fifteen minutes, but it was still a better-than-average movie. Interesting soundtrack, too. I'm reading now in the credits that it's based on a novel by someone named Mats Wahl, although I can't read the tiny type of the name. I assume that's in part because it's a Swedish name, since it says, "and the Swedish film of the same name." (Mmmm is that anything like Swedish Fish?

The Invisible." Kind of a sleeper. I actually don't remember it being out in theaters, but I saw previews on DVDs I had watched and then finally spotted it at the library to take home and watch. I'm in the middle of it right now. It's really good! Very well done. I recommend it, and I haven't even finished it. (Of course, there's still a chance that the ending sucks, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt based on the beginning and middle so far.) Cast of unknowns, except for Marcia Gay Harden (whose name always makes me chuckle). Why are these movies almost always better than the big-name Hollywood counterparts?! I didn't think long about second, third, fourth place, etc. when I answered "Firefly," but your post blew me the fuck away. THOSE ARE *EXACTLY* THE SHOWS I WOULD HAVE CONTINUED MY LIST WITH! (In addition to Seinfeld and Cheers.) Well, except for The Shield. I haven't really ever seen that, but I've heard it's really good. WoW we have similar tastes in t.v. That show's on reruns around here laaaate at night. Frickin' GENIUS. It's 20-something years old and it still holds up and gets laughs! An all-time classic. M*A*S*H deserves honorable mention, yeah. Spirits fly on dangerous missions Imaginations on fire
