I went from a Crossfire 119 to a Velo 96 when I had just over 1000 jumps. My last season on the Crossfire, I had done about 250 jumps, and hit the gates that we had set up in our landing area on about 240 of them, throwing a consistent 270. By the end of the season, my swoops no longer felt fast and thrilling. I felt current, and like I had really learned to fly the Crossfire well, so I did some research and bought my first Velo. I've got over 1000 jumps on 96s now, and have no desire to downsize again. I might put those skinny lines on though... Canuck

They're being sold, brand new with the cutaway installed, for $440 in the classifieds. So no, I don't think you're going to get $500 for it. Canuck

Swoopers - could/would you upsize if you had to?
Canuck replied to skybytch's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I've put over a thousand jumps on Velocity 96s over the last three seasons. Last year, I also put 100+ jumps on an old, ragged out, Stiletto 107, and I still loved every second of those skydives. I would for sure keep skydiving if I couldn't fly a braced wing. Canuck -
They're not going to let you on your head in your first hour in a tunnel - probably not for several hours. It will likely take at least an hour before you will even get into a high speed upright position. Learn your HD the old fashioned way - in the air. Canuck

Dude, you are so Slatonized... If the Neos does what it says it does, then I think it has a perfect place in the market - jumpers who want to swoop (and I'm not talkin' Sabre 2 swoop), but aren't going to compete, and want a wing with less packing/opening hassles. I remember a few years ago, Icarus had a protype floating around that had a semi-formed nose, and the word on the street was that the thing opened perfectly on heading 99 times out of 100. I assume that's what "heading control stability" is. I love all this 5/10 year old technology talk. The shit's all made out of nylon and strings, so for that matter it's more like 40 year old technology (or whenever it was they quit using silk). Canuck

On a side note, I have always found that RI rigs (both the Voodoo and the Talon FS) will easily take mains at least one size larger than they are designed for. My V1 had a Crossfire 119 in it, and easily could have handled something in the 130-135 range, and my Stiletto 107 and Velocity 96 are both quite loose in my FS0. Not dangerously loose by any means, just easy to pack. Canuck

I've got one. It's a great rig - super comfortable and every bit as freefly friendly as the Voodoo (I had one of those before I got the FS). RI customer service is top notch too. Canuck

Mad Respect for this CrW downplane-to-swoop (0.17sec vid)
Canuck replied to Flying_Penguin's topic in Canopy Relative Work
That's about 26 000 jumps worth of combined experience there. And honestly, that wasn't one of their better shows - hardly any pucker factor at all. I've seen them bring the downplane WAY lower, and when they're really feeling the juice, they each pull a switchblade on landing to make it even more styley. That's the Plaid Jackets, by the way, Canada's CRW team who placed 3rd in sequential at this year's world championships. Canuck -
Yikes! Very few of the swoops on that video didn't make me cringe. Someone is going to femur on the bank of that ditch. Canuck

Eloy has a FANTASTIC selection of coaches. My top three choices there, in no particular order, would be Jason Peters, Amy C (I'm not even going to try and spell it!!), and Steve Curtis. The fact that they are all on the current 4-way VRW champion team is just gravy. They are each, in their own way, incredible coaches. Amy teaches you in a gentle but effective way, Curtis is blunt and says it the way it is (and is always right) and Jason knows more about how to fly in any orientation than anybody I know, and you can't help but learn just by being in the air with him. Nothing wrong with Perris either. If you go there, hook up with John Chism. He's a badass coach too, and unbelievably down to Earth considering how good he is. Their tunnel isn't as good. Canuck
-
Eloy. Best planes, best tunnel, best weather, excellent coaches. Canuck

I remember when 400 feet was considered a long swoop. It wasn't all that long ago. What do you mean was...400 still is a very long swoop. Consistent runs at 400 would still likely win the distance event at a meet pretty much anywhere other than in Colorado (or some other 5000 ft DZ). Canuck

That's this Canuck you sold it to. Still have it, but it's in my back-up rig now. Still flies great, even with the 1000 plus jumps that are on it!

You're not flying the camera slot anymore Pete? How are you liking that for a change? Canuck (the other Pete)

Fruitcake's canopy camp during the Invasion is great. He sets up a course on the side of the alternate landing area and spends two days videoing every landing you make (as many jumps as you want to do - hop 'n pops or freefalls). He tailors the instruction to your personal needs. Want to learn how to fly a predictable pattern and flare? Done. Want to learn how to throw down a 540 and use rears. Done. You will not find a canopy control camp that is better value for your dollar. I can't make the Invasion this year Canuck

Cool, that means there will be a JVX for me to try out just down the road... Going from turbines to Cessnas will suck, but going from sea level to 3000 ft is nice for swooping! Not much of a canopy piloting scene in Calgary, but a few of us in the Edmonton area are seriously hoping to get some kind of mini-circuit going next year. It will be great to have another swooper around. More jobs in Alberta than people to fill them with. Some fast food places are even offering almost $20 an hour. Crazy. Canuck

I jump Velo 96s with a 2 camera set-up. When they open hard, they suck. The other 49 out of 50 jumps, they open nicer than my old Crossfire. Canuck

World Championships Canopy Piloting
Canuck replied to pinkskyvan's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Anybody know where we can see the actual scores from the event? Canuck -
I picked up a PAL HC-96 for Worlds. It's a great camera - definitely a sharper image than I get with my PC-109. The top loading is very handy too. I had it side mounted; it's not that much wider than a PC model. Canuck

I can't wait for US Nats when ALL the teams are competing. Cali has a few very good teams, and the AZ crew looks solid too. Camera flying is going to be key. Video busts will decide who stands where on the podium IMO. Not so sure about the booties thing... Canuck

PD Reserve wingloading 2:1 and higher
Canuck replied to frost's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I'll take a guess that he means the announcement of the release of the PD reserves made from the new fabric that has about two thirds the pack volume of F-111 (although I'm not holding my breath - especially considering the company who was manufacturing that fabric went out of business). Canuck -
What's the NEOS? Canuck

No LANC port on the HC26. Canuck

Downsize... Kidding. What are you doing, beer line swooping? It's easy to hit a plateau doing that. Have you got gates you can practice hitting? How about accuracy? Start working the more technical stuff, and I think you'll find the learning curve again. Worked for me anyway. Canuck
