I didn't know I had to invade someone else's country and kill a bunch of people in order to have an opinion on something. I'll get right on that. Hopefully I'll get spit on too! yeehaw

Most of what I learned in that class came from all the books we read, not out of the professor's mouth. We also had some Vets come in and speak to us, etc. College is not some scary secret society where professors preach lies and it is taken as gospel. Generally a lot of serious study and research is done. Everyone is encouraged to reach their own conclusions. Frankly, we are mostly spoon fed your point of view by mainstream society (Vietnam movies, etc). Someone has to question the government line occasionally or we end up becoming what we thought we were fighting in that war. Sorry about your business.

I really don't have a horse in this race. You all seem a lot more indoctrinated than me lol...

Did I miss something? I only see one first hand account in this thread. Your response said "those of us who were spit on." To me, that implies you were not personally spat on. Forgive me for reading between the lines, but my reading skills are poor as you pointed out lol.

Ladies and gents we have a winner! Feel free to ridicule me, but please don't equate me with holocaust deniers. It's well documented that the Germans killed millions in concentration camps, but it's clearly much less documented that US GI's were spit on after Vietnam. Anyway, it's best not to bring up genocide while discussing Vietnam for obvious reasons.

Ok thanks, but I still haven't heard a first hand account of someone being spat on.

I think people with first person accounts (not second hand) should go on the historical record with their stories because there currently aren't any mention of these incidents prior to 1980. That would be a big help if you want future generations to know the truth.

Maybe you should go to college and find out for yourself.

Sorry if I offended any veterans. Certainly wasn't my intention and I thank you for your service. I was just regurgitating the academic consensus on the subject.
-
I didn't "PA" anyone. Sorry I offended you, but most of the academic research supports my statement. Do a google search.

Where do we go from here???
deltron80 replied to shmuelrich's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Good point. Although when I finished AFF I hadn't done tracking yet (I took a little extra time to get turns right), so didn't know how to even start with it. We did a little of that on some of my coaching jumps, so now that is another option. Yea tracking is not only fun, but it's a good skill to have... I consider myself lucky that I had to do a bunch of solo jumps after graduating AFF (before getting my A), because I worked on my tracking most of that time. I conveniently discovered once I got into jumping with other people more, the only skill I really *needed* was the ablity to track away at the end of the skydive... If you are having to pull in place on a four way because you can't reliably track away from the group that's not so great imo.. -

you can always practice your tracking on a solo jump.. just make sure you know where you're tracking to... good times! -

I feel the same way...I don't understand why people say jumping alone is "boring," especially new jumpers. I am a very nervous person, but so far every skydive I have been on has been fun & very exciting even when I am alone... Even when alone you are still flying around in the goddamn sky like jesus christ... try to enjoy it folks!!! -
so who spit on your brother and what was his reaction to that?

It was in one of the 10 books I read for a Vietnam class in college..I can get you the whole reading list if you want, but this is the particular book that came from..learned a lot in that class Vietnam and other American Fantasies by H. Bruce Franklin Yes I know reading and colleges are only for communists, so I guess I am one.

who exactly spit on him? do tell
-
***True, but then liberals are (collectively) lame cowards...spitting on soldiers returning from Vietnam, for example, and sending hate mail to the families of POWs and KIAs. Never underestimate how vile they can be. It makes a nice anecdote, but no Vietnam Vets were actually spat on.. that's one of the many collective myths of the Vietnam War. I doubt many hippies would actually have the nerve to spit on a battle hardened soldier so it makes sense. I know you will adamantly claim that they were spat on, but that doesn't make it true.
