I am SO in the know. So am I and I can't believe she would choose to miss out on the fun I guessed that the female voice on the phone was her, solely because it had been her suggestion, then learned that she'd pussied out. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

I'll be drunk the next few days, so I better chime in with birthday wishes now as well. I hope you both have fantastic commemorations of your birth that include lots and lots of spankings. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

Does a divorced man become a bachelor again after a certain amount of time has passed? Or is bachelorhood like virginity, in that once it's given up it's gone forever? Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

Six Muslim Clerics Removed from USAir Flight for Praying
livendive replied to Andy9o8's topic in Speakers Corner
There are any number of minorities who run around with a chip on their shoulder, and look for opportunities to get it knocked off. If you can't see that, then you are wearing rose colored glasses. I'm glad to hear that pansy-asses who can be terror-stricken by something as simple as a prayer are a minority. Unfortunately, it does appear that their numbers are growing. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew) -
I think I see the problem. You call 100 the average (correct), but then only attribute 25% of the population to be "above average" which you've apparently redefined as the range between 90 and 110. In fact, intelligence demonstrates a normal distribution, thus approximately 50% of the population falls above the average and 50% below. That 50% also fall within one standard deviation doesn't change how many are on either side of the mean. In 12 random people, approximately 6 of them will have above average intelligence and 6 will have below average intelligence. If 8 out of every 12 are complete idiots, than either 2 of those 8 (25%) are complete idiots with above average intelligence, or the people you are meeting are skewed to the lower end of the curve. My IQ is immaterial to this discussion, provided I have the intelligence to explain my point. As long as I've related that the average is a specific number rather than a range, that goal has hopefully been met. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

It seems that there is a bit of a conflict here. I thought that we were a melting pot, a place where different metals are put together to make a strong alloy, not something that separates and falls apart at the first blow of the hammer, because that is where we are headed. That means one direction, one flag, one purpose. That is the true freedom of all of mankind. If your religion demands that I submit to you, then, you need to leave. I'm not sure where to begin to respond to this, so I guess I'll just go with your first sentence. What conflict does the rest of your post have with mine? It seems to me that our two posts above are in near perfect agreement, and neither of the above paragraphs agree with your other opinions expressed in this thread. Personally, I don't think that everyone needs to agree on one direction, else elections would be pointless, but the rest of your quote above rings pretty true. And if you demand that these Muslims submit to you and not pray in public, doesn't that mean you should be checking out international property prices? And standing up on an airplane, and praying to Allah as a group, is an in your face, " fuck you, America" attitude. No, it's not. If you think it is, that says something much worse about you than it does about them. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew) -

Their standing up to pray and making a scene about it is no different than an evangelistic preacher feeling compelled to stand up and spend five minutes sharing the gospel with everyone so that their trip to hell isn't on his conscience. Many people here, who are defending those Muslims would be totallly incensed by the Christian. Don't get me wrong, I'd initially be amused and eventually be quite irritated by either, but not to the point of stabbing them in the throat with a pen! I think you know what kind of bar I'm talking about. Your question was "should they be afraid to." Not "should they be able to." That is not a valid comparison. A sheet and a white dunce cap is a symbol of bigotry, hate, and ill will, especially toward blacks. I would hope that even so, the residents would recognize it as an idiotic expression of free speech, but I'm not so foolish as to believe that would be the case. Still, a prayer is not a symbol of bigotry and hate. I have not heard what they were saying that was so "anti-American", so I can't really opine on whether it was merely dissent or a message of hate. I've not heard anything that suggested it was threatening, or that in any way connected them with a violent hate group the way a KKK dress would. It is possible though, and if there was reason to suspect imminent harm, a violent reaction would be justified. If it were just general hatred, a violent reaction should be expected, but also just as illegal as blacks assaulting a sheet-clad person solely for his poor choice in attire. It's an excellent analogy based on your question of "should they be afraid." Unless you are going to argue that you wouldn't be afraid to walk thru Watts or Harlem dressed that way. A person walking through Watts or Harlem dressed in KKK garb should be afraid, because they're associating themself with a violent group and saying something that is distinctly hateful. A Muslim praying, in a bar, an airport, or an airplane shouldn't be afraid, because they're not associating themself with a violent group or saying anything hateful. If they said "Osama Bin Laden is our hero. Hail Al Queda! Death to all Americans!", that would be different. They'd be associating themselves with a violent group, saying something hateful, and I'd agree that your analogy was valid. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew) -

I bet we've killed more than a few of them with guns though. Should Arabs be afraid to be in any part of the country that allows guns? Blues, Dave Yes they should. I don't think it would be a good idea to walk into a bar in Alabama and start praying. Apparently you don't think very highly of my countrymen, Alabamans in particular. Perhaps the unbigoted people with whom I associate are a distinct minority. I hope not. That is not a valid comparison. A sheet and a white dunce cap is a symbol of bigotry, hate, and ill will, especially toward blacks. I would hope that even so, the residents would recognize it as an idiotic expression of free speech, but I'm not so foolish as to believe that would be the case. I just saw one of them on the news. He claims to be a US citizen and spoke fluent English. These men probably planned this move from the beginning. They could have gone into the toilet and prayed one at a time. I'm sure that Allah would have overlooked not following ritual to the letter. And Rosa Parks could have walked to the back of the bus like a good little Negro. Are you honestly suggesting that an American citizen (who speaks fluent English) should have to wait for an available shitter in order to pray? And would this apply to all American citizens, or just the ones who worship an inferior god? Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew) -

I'm amazed that so many people seem incapable of (or are unwilling to) recognize that this incident was significantly more than just an innocent evening prayer session. For those who don't get it, try and figure out why it's against the law to yell FIRE in a crowded theater. I'm neither incapable nor unwilling to recognize that more than prayer was involved. I stated that these people deserved to be arrested for not leaving the airplane when asked. Your quote of me above is in reply to a person who said he would kill someone for praying, and your analogy of prayer to yelling fire in a theater is bewildering. It's logical for people to be afraid of fire, as fire routinely hurts and kills. Being afraid of prayer though? When was the last time someone was hurt or killed by a prayer? Get a team of reindeer harnessed together, put your rig on (unpacked) and tie it behind them. Then crack the whip and have them groundlaunch you and pull you around the landing area while everyone snaps pictures.

And I would hope that you and every other passenger who joined you was convicted of murder. You would kill someone for praying?! I will not invoke Godwin's Law. I will not invoke Godwin's Law. I will not invoke Godwin's Law. I will not invoke Godwin's Law. But dammit, it really actually fits this time!! jlahrdjyvrzkjhguueee Having to announce one's intentions to pray is absurd. Asking others to join them in prayer (including those who were sleeping and those who don't pray) is rude. You live in a country where the freedom of religion was bought with blood, and yet you expect adherents to the second largest religion in the world to kowtow to your ignorance of their customs? If something as basic as the prayers of 21% of the world population freaks you out, perhaps cracking a book and developing a rudimentary understanding of the practice would be a stress-reducing use of your time. It would most certainly be more informative and effective then simply expecting each and every one of them who comes into contact with you to ask your permission before engaging in prayer. This is pretty simple stuff. The six Muslim men were free to say their prayers. The other passengers were free to take offense. At least the Americans among them have no right to not be offended. The airline has the right to land and refuse to do further business with the Muslim men. Security had the right to remove the men forcibly from the airplane when they didn't want to comply. In the future, Muslims may wish to avoid airlines that will not allow them to worship in the manner their religion dictates. Non-muslims may wish to avoid airlines which do allow such prayer. And everyone involved shouldn't be such fucking pussies. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew) -

I don't know where you're from, but I'm from the US. We are a country of immigrants, a blending of cultures such that the sum is greater than the parts. We were founded, in part, on the principle that people should be free to practice the religion of their choosing, including none, and the government should not intrude on their choices in this regard. We are most certainly NOT a Christian nation, but you are absolutely free to wear a crucifix, including on TV. Yes, your post sounded bigoted. If you are from the US, it also sounded totally inaccurate. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew) -
Those are your peers. Despite that, somehow you're saying that at least 25% of complete idiots have above average intelligence. Forgive me if I don't want that kind of logic altering the Constitution of my country. I think the party line response to someone who thinks our system is all fucked up is, "You're welcome to leave and find somewhere better." Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" The title of this thread put John Cougar Mellancamp in my head, and I was going to post something nasty in return for that. But the rest of the post was about one of my favorite things...gospel singers. I don't care what the message is, I can't help but smile when there's southern baptist type "holy roller" music playing.
