'try once' try twice' go for silver' is the mantra taught to first jumpers at our dz. on saturday, my first jump of the year and first ever jump with boc deplyment, i had a harder than expected pull. all of our student rigs had been converted from belly band to boc over the winter, as a result, the pockets are still quite tight. i rached, grabbed and pulled as usual, but my hand slipped off the handle. i reached again, found the ball and pulled harder. it came out fine, but as the canopy opened, i noticed my left hand was already on the reserve handle! muscle memory is a good thing. i never jumped anything but a 182, and i did the full pff course out of it last summer. they are fun, and like others have siad, you get to spend quality time with 3 (or 4) of your new best friends on the way to altitude. we go to 10.5 most of the time, but 12's are done if conditions permit. (meaning if the dzo is on the load!). we have a pretty solid line on an otter for july, if it comes through, it will be the first (beer!) time an otter has flown skydivers in the maritimes. i'm scared half to death (but really looking forward to) jumping a big turbine for the first time! :3:? woohoo! opening weekend at skydive moncton and the weather couldn't have been better! up until thursday it was cold and rainy for two weeks straight. friday dawned bright, cloudfree, low winds and it stayed that way all weekend! unheard of in these parts. it was a long weekend for us so we were jumping right up until sunset last night. not sure about firsts though, i did my first jump on my shiny new solo certificate, did a jump with video to try my a lic. style series but fell like a rock, video guy had to stand to try to catch me and just went by me as i opened. call me anvilboy i guess! our dz used pullouts for iad (with the pilot chute in a left hand pocket on the side of the container) and pff (with the pilot chute on the belly band). this year they are converting all student gear to boc for a couple of reasons already mentioned... there would be no transition period for students getting their own gear (which would likely have boc depolyment) and a boc encourages a good arch, as opposed to a belly band throwout.. an insturctor on a course i took last week showed me this site. i'm not a hunter or a gun owner but i found it funny nonetheless. apparently there's a bunch of guys in the middle east somewhere with too much time and money, so they bought themselves a gunsmith's lathe and started making custom rifles. they came up with some dandies. the best stuff on the site (accurate reloading) is the video page. check out anything with t-rex in the title. the t-rex is a .577 calbre rifle that packs a pretty mean punch. if that isn't enough, they built another one that's a .700 calibre. they're nuts!
