for non-fiction, I suggest a little book called "DUCY: Exploits, Advice, and Ideas of the Renowned Strategist" by David Sklansky and Alan Schoonmaker. Now, these guys normally write books about poker, but this one is different. Basically, it's a book about how Sklansky applies math, logic, probability and psychology to a host of real world problems, big and small. It is REALLY interesting. Fiction: Try John Fenzel's The Lazarus Covenant. He's a fellow skydiver, it's his first novel, and it's a really fun read from someone who knows wtf he's talking about. Also, if you haven't read George RR Martin's series (starting with A Game of Thrones) I would HIGHLY recommend it. It's in a class by itself, something i would call "political fantasy", and it's outstanding. Only downside is it's not finished... Which rig to buy? Infinity X Icon X Javelin?
BikerBabe replied to passaroc's topic in Gear and Rigging
funny, ask a rigger and most will say infinities are in their top 3 rigs. i would wager it wasn't sized for you? My infinity is like sitting on the couch, it's so comfy. I love the riser covers and the way it looks. To each his own, though i have NEVER (honestly, never) heard that much vitriol about an infinity...you're definitely an outlier. Abuquerque Balloon Festival 2010
BikerBabe replied to castrodavidd's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
contact the folks at Skydive New Mexico. There are tons of balloon pilots who live in the area, and the SNM guys definitely know the ones who are jumper-friendly. Don't expect to get to jump during the mass ascensions in the AM or anything like that, though. And if you haven't jumped at SNM, you should. yes, they have 182s, but they are the friendliest, nicest bunch of people you'll ever meet. it's an AWESOME place to call your home DZ. this. Not to mention, when we're cadets on the team, we also have to spend MOST of our time at the airfield teaching and jumpmastering the basic jump course, which involves way more ground school than any AFF, leading to 5 SOLO jumps. The actual time left over for competiton or demo training is a small percentage of the actual air time the team members get. People seem to think that Wings of Blue members are handed hours of tunnel and hundreds of 4-way training jumps, when in reality we worked our asses off training every other AFA cadet, ROTC cadet, general, etc who wanted to take AM 490 for their jump wings. And I say "we" because once a PTWOB, always a PTWOB. Andi #096 Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!

Lame cast from tv show 'Glee' doing remakes of popular songs.
BikerBabe replied to ridestrong's topic in The Bonfire
the show is awesome. You need the context, though, to appreciate the songs. I'm actually really surprised it's on the radio at all... Especially since the version of Don't Stop Believin' on the show is very different than the one they actually released for the radio. And the singers DO have talent...just "show choir" and broadway type talent. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup! -
oi...you guys do realize that Shah will NEVER admit that an engineer or someone who might-be-a-size-8-or-maybe-a-10-but-he-can't-really-tell could ever be hot...because i think above all else he refuses to admit he might be wrong or even able to change. Notice how he hasn't once acknowledged the gorgeous women in the posted picture other than to joke about the showgirls' headwear. It would KILL him to admit that even ONE of those skydiving women is hot, because it would force him to admit there might be exceptions to his "rules". That's what this is really about. Wow. This is tough for me. Stu Aitken-Cade is a good friend of mine, my brother-in-law and his girlfriend help run the USGPRU, and my husband has been involved with this race series for a long time. We are so proud of what the series has accomplished over the past several years, growing from a grassroots organization to something recognized by AMA and MotoGP as the premier Grand Prix racing organization in the US. So many USGPRU vets are now racing AMA and top series in europe, and we were ecstatic when Stu told us about how MotoGP had asked him to be the ONLY non-MotoGP sanctioned support class at Indy this year. I mean, what an a amazing opportunity, not only for the series, but for the kids! Can you imagine playing their sport in front of their heroes, like Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden? I don't know how many kids die or get seriously hurt on dirt bikes (and at much younger ages), but believe me when i say every safety precaution is taken in roadracing. no shortcuts for the kids are taken...if anything, it's more strict. The bikes are small and light (125cc or 250cc, max). He absolutely died doing what he loved, and I can tell you from countless hours in the pits and talking with the parents of these kids...this is NOT a sport where parents push them too hard. If anything, the parents don't want them doing it but the kids love it so much the parents can't say no. Anyway, if anyone has any questions about the series, motorcycle roadracing, or anything else about this, feel free to PM me or ask in here. I Need a Decent Hotel on the Mall in Washington DC
BikerBabe replied to NewGuy2005's topic in The Bonfire
erm...no hotels on the mall. honestly, stay anywhere the metro goes and you'll be fine. it's a really nice subway system and the smithsonian stop lets you out smack dab in the center of the mall... Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup! -
well, until it turned to paper, my Jedei 105. *cry* when i have money and a life again, it will be a samurai. Brian's are the most "intuitive" canopies I've ever flown, I dunno how else to describe it. They just seem to know what I want them to do, and make it easy to do it. It's August...Anyone else missing the WFFC
BikerBabe replied to jaffo's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I have. It happens every year. All the big companies, tons of skydivers all in one place, hundreds and hundreds of jumps being made... It's called Nationals. Not as much pure partying, but all that other stuff you said, good friends jumping together, doing what they love, etc. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup! -

where's the "agree with the proper use of checks and balances such that the majority is not able to summarily deny the rights of a minority" option? Thank god for those individuals in black robes, or we'd still have Jim Crow laws, too. You DO realize that the only reason we have integrated schools, water fountains, buses, parks, restaurants, workplaces, etc is because of those "guys in black robes", right? *facepalm* something tells me you probably should have voted for the third option yourself... lol...shah...it's actually a metaphor for man vs. nature, but yours works too, I suppose... go read Death in the Afternoon by Hemingway. Then go see a corrida, preferably a GOOD one where the matadores aren't hacks and can actually perform a good estocada, which kills the bull instantly. ever been to a slaughterhouse? I wouldn't call myself a "fan", but I CAN appreciate the artistry involved, and I also understand that bulls are smart...they can learn. If the toreros take too long, there's going to be a goring. Anyway, I'm not going to argue for or against, because to those who have never experienced it, there is no way to describe it. Good for Catalonia. I highly doubt you'll see Navarre ban it anytime soon, though. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!

...I wouldn't come to Costa Mesa http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-0520-costa-mesa-immigration-20100520,0,5482036.story?track=rss my real question is this: WTF does "limiting the number of soccer fields in parks" have fuck-all to do with it? Sorry, but if that doesn't scream "racism" to you, then I don't know how much more blatant it has to be. What, white upper middle class kids can't play or enjoy soccer, too? Nope, apparently soccer is a sport only brown people enjoy, so we have to limit their access... Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!

Political Compass: I generally stand . . .
BikerBabe replied to turtlespeed's topic in Speakers Corner
except the test gives 4 possible *general* results and your poll only gives two. or put in a way math geeks like me understand: your poll is one-dimensional while the test gives two-dimensional results. How is someone like Canuck supposed to honestly answer your poll, seeing as he is "both"? (I'd be willing to bet he chose "right of center", even though he could have logically chosen either, because he "hates being called liberal") So basically what you are going to get is how people see themselves, rather than what the test results showed. Maybe that's what you wanted, but if so, why post the link to the test? Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
