I would argue that the best big way canopy is the one you are MOST comfortable and proficient at flying. when i had money and could still afford big ways, I used my Jedei 105, loaded at about 1.5:1. Because I KNEW the canopy. I knew how to fly it, how it opened, how to put it down exactly where I wanted it to go, and how to land it in all sorts of conditions. Most people would say it isn't a "good" big-way canopy, but really, I think i would have been uncomfortable flying anything else with 100 other people in the sky. anyone have a job? I'm overqualified, too smart by half, i get shit done, and am willing to work for a pittance. http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-poker-busts-20110416,0,308055.story the thing is...online poker itself isn't really illegal, and never has been. US banks' dealing with online gambling sites is what they tried to regulate. These are some trumped up charges, right here. This isn't democrat or republican, this is both. It's a question of freedom. All you "small government" republicans should be up in arms about things like this, but really, it's the morally superior repubs who sponsor shit like this, who block all attempts at regulation and taxation of online poker, and who like to legislate my "morality" (as if playing poker is a moral issue at all). Democrats should be up in arms because once again a freedom is being taken away, albeit a small one. Ugh. You know what's worst? People in Iran and Afghanistan and Iraq can log into pokerstars and play right now, and I CANNOT. this is america? what happened to us? American Style IPAs.... Your favorite? Bring on the HOPS
BikerBabe replied to LongWayToFall's topic in The Bonfire
If american hops are your thing, try to get ahold of some of Green Flash's beers. Heck, most of the San Diego places make some pretty hoppy IPAs. I'm not really a fan, though I DO like the Sublimely Self-Righteous, for some reason. Hard to describe, it's like the initial taste is IPA, then the finish is something much more malty. I like the stuff made with more mellow european hops, but to each his own! Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup! -

Football is manadory to be co-ed? Why can't they just have a womens wrestling? This rings just like the girls wanting to be Boy Scouts. HEY! I always wanted to be in the boy scouts when i was a kid because my brother got to do cool stuff like go backpacking, canoeing, hunting, etc. The girl scouts "camped" in platform tents and cooked and made crafts. zzzzzz.....boring! This is the most insightful post in this thread. And it appears that a lot of people are starting to agree with you, lawrocket: http://www.cnn.com/2011/POLITICS/01/09/arizona.shooting.rhetoric/index.html?hpt=C1 Another thing i've noticed is that here in SC, no one seems to read posts anymore as much as they read the name of the poster and immediately start to form their arguments. I can barely stand to read through these types of threads anymore because of all the responses to the *person* and not the idea. I propose that for a day, the moderators change everyone's username to something completely different. start with a clean slate. then instead of bashing "the professor" or "mike" we can actually read and respond to ideas. Some of which, when you get right down to it, are good on BOTH sides of the debate (any debate). All this rhetoric and anger at each other is causing real ideas to get lost, people to hate each other over stupid shit, and NOTHING to get done. not just in here, but on the larger political scale. I can't change who Glenn Beck and Keith Olbermann are, but maybe if one day mnealtx and kallend became completely anonymous again, they might actually hold a civil discussion regarding guns. or whatever. How long and hard did *he* fight to get the party a majority? I barely heard his name prior to November. Did he really win it, or did Pelosi and Obama lose it, just as Bush lost it in 2008? Besides all that, he already had been SOTH before, so it's not like it was the culmination of a life dream. Rather, it's a comeback. can't believe i'm defending my former esteemed congressman, but John Boehner has been in the house for a long time, and was voted leader of the republican caucus long before he was minority leader. he does have a history of leadership among his peers. However, he IS still the epitome of the "slimy politician"l. seriously. from someone who would never vote for him, no matter what he did for me when i was in college. As I said, it doesn't really matter, does it? I would *like* it to be right so it would cause people to care about the environment, conserve, and all that. But my wishes aren't what drive science...nor should the wishes of the anti-AGW crowd. SCIENCE should drive science. Politics shouldn't drive science. And in this case, it undeniably is, and that is a travesty. I'm actually becoming more interested in the sociological and psychological drivers behind the proponents of both sides of the issue. To me, it's just inherently obvious that we should change our ways to conserve the planet, clean up our air and water, protect endangered species, etc. Psychologically, it's very strange to me, as someone who is usually able to see (if not agree with) the opposite sides on issues, that i CANNOT even begin to comprehend this vehement anti-environmental stance that I see in so many posters in here. It's like listening to people trying to tell me that the sky is green instead of blue, and arguing so passionately that it is, when I can see with my own two eyes that it is most definitely not green! But why can't i see that other side? And why can't those on the other side see the point of view that conservation and cleanliness and care for the planet are worth a bit of short term cost? These are the questions that bother me about this issue, and it's why i get so dissatisfied with the "debate" in here....no one is really addressing this sort of thing. *shrug* Continue screaming about the validity of the science...I am not a climatologist, i have no irons in that fire. so i guess it's an excuse to just use use use, right? This is why i stay out of this argument. Because it makes me so angry that the "anti-AGW crowd" or whatever you want to call the right wing seem to be trying so fucking hard to look for any excuse they can to not change their ways, use whatever they want as much as they want, not conserve, not care, line their pockets, and all around be selfish. I don't really care one way or another about the science, tbh. Other than the fact that for some people, it causes them to think twice about driving a block to the store, recycle, etc. And that's a good thing. For so many people in this thread, it just seems you're looking for validation that it's OK to continue not caring about the world around you. You scream so hard against AGW. Why? why is it so important that it be wrong? to save YOU a few pennies? I suspect that's the case. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!

Air Force Academy skydiving
BikerBabe replied to flashvortx's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Yes. 25-30 hours (used to be 40 when we jumped rounds,. the extra time devoted to more intensive reserve deployment procedures and LOTS of PLF practice) on the ground before the first jump, then 5 solo 10-second delays. The cadets on the Wings of Blue are the instructors and jumpmasters, the enlisted and officer staff are the AFF coaches, pilots, and logistics guys. Funny you say that about the f-22. Those of us from the engineering and acquisition world(s) know the massive political fuck-ups that the yf-22/yf-23 fly-off and production decision were. By all accounts, the yf-23 was the FAR superior choice, but the companies and the politicians fixed the fly-off so that no GOOD comparative data was ever collected, virtually insuring Lockheed would have a lock on the contract, even though Northrop made the superior product. For example, something as simple as having the same pilots fly both planes -- nope...didn't happen. not ONE pilot who tested the yf-22 ever flew the yf-23, and vice versa. Kinda tough to get an objective comparison, eh? Not to mention, Lockheed added supercruise (the ability to cruise supersonically) even though the requirements documents mentioned NO need for that ability, and most pre-production analyses even argued that supercruise was not only unnecessary, but potentially unsafe. But Lockheed is full of masterful salesmen, able to sell ice to eskimos...and that's how the f-22 got chosen over the f-23. How long was your first jump course?
BikerBabe replied to lopullterri's topic in Safety and Training
40 hours. but my first jump was also a solo 10-sec delay, so that much training was entirely apropos. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup! -

speaking of MoH, mark, your signature struck a nerve with me. "Into The Mouth of the Cat" is the title of a biography of Lance Sijan, a MoH recipient from Vietnam, posthumous, i'm afraid. The book title is obviously taken from that which you quote in your sig, and it's appropriate. anyway, it's nice to see a living soldier honored. After hearing his story, i have to agree that he'll be a good representative of the award. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup! -

I'm so over all the idiotic fighting, that my ballot had one vote on it, yes on prop 19. It's the only thing i truly cared about this time around. seems the morality police got out the vote at the last minute again, unfortunately. My mind is, however, blown away by the fact that John Boehner will be Speaker of the House. My parents and I predicted it 18 years ago when he was my congressman nominating me for the Air Force Academy. And here it is. Too bad he's a sleazeball. Definitely the type i expect to get discovered with a hooker in a hotel somewhere, or having an affair with a staffer, or taking bribes on the side. I'm grateful, but i'd still never vote for the guy... Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!

Now I want a Frito Pie for breakfast! If you walk into a Skyline Chili expecting the kind of chili to put on a Frito Pie, you will be sorely disappointed, surprised, shocked, whatever. It has no beans, the meat is so finely ground that the consistency is much thinner than Texas-style chili, and they use chocolate and nutmeg and cinnamon as well as chili pepper to flavor the stuff. you order it like this: 3-way = Spaghetti topped with chili and cheese. 4-way = that plus beans 5 way = that plus onions or you could get a coney dog...hot dog with chili and cheese. someone said it right. Once you stop trying to compare it to Texas-style chili, that's when you start to appreciate it. As for Graeters, someday, it will take over the world, and you will all realize what sort of ice cream nirvana you have been striving for unto that day... where are you from originally? And Cincinnati chili isn't ohioan...it's actually Greek. Ever had a good Moussaka? You'll find the flavor somewhat similar. And it's a topping, not a dish in and of itself, yanno. FWIW, I thought he was talking about Skyline Chili, too...and I got all excited for a second! I just checked my pantry and i'm out, gonna have to order more cans online. Not as good, but still better than nothing!
