OK, only for a while. I have to send in my canopy for a reline, and I don't wanna! I like it too much! waaah! I've been putting it off as it is, but I know I have to let it go for a while...that old adage about "if you love someone, set her free...." Ugh, I wish a local rigger could do it, but seeing how the canopy is handmade and each one was slightly different, I feel better sending it back to Brian. I just hate to not have my Jedei to jump!!! Oh well, back to the stilleto for a while... Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!

It's ANOTHER cover of Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi". I think I've heard about 5 different covers of that song. I know Dylan did it, as well as Amy Grant. There were some other indie versions, as well. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!

Municipal airport shuts down jumping
BikerBabe replied to steve1's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Is the city not allowing them to operate? Or is the city not allowing them to LAND on airport property? We have this problem. So several years ago our club members ponied up some dough and bought 5 acres of land 3 miles away from the airport, and that is where we land. We get a van ride back to the airport. Now we just rent a hangar and our plane takes of and lands there. As far as I know, the airport can't FORBID a legal aviation business/activity from operating from the airport, but they can make things very difficult in an under-the-table sort of way (dragging their feet getting av-gas, charging exorbitantly high rent, etc). Hire a lawyer and get someone who knows the city to start going to airport board/city council meetings. Once he/she has been attneding for a while, then they can start talking. Try to find one person on the board/council who is open to the cause. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup! -
*waves to all* So THAT'S why I didn't see Zenister at Perris on Saturday! Sorry you had to woork, man. Michele, girl, you obviously still don't believe what I told you time and time again...you are a better skydiver than you let on. Don't be fooled, people! If you go to jump with Michele, she'll surprise you, because she really can skydive better than she lets on. I had a great weekend, though it was cold (Cali isn't supposed to be that cold!). Michele, if you never push your limits or make mistakes, how in thwe world are you supposed to learn anything? Oh, and you didn't mention how spectacular that 6-way exit was. Well, I do LOVE northern Cali, but I don't have time this trip. I'm really going to watch my hubby race (at least, that's my excuse) Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!

Yay! I leave for SoCal in just a couple of hours... I'm jumping with Michele at Elsinore on Friday, and then I'm headed to Perris on Saturday. I can't wait! This is going to be a blast! two of my teammates from AZ are driving out and will be with me at Perris on Sat...hopefully we'll get to meet some DZ.commers when we're there! Nope, they're real. Here we have good old T or C, otherwise known as Truth or Consequences, NM. Named for the old game show. It used to be called "Hot Springs", but they changed the name to T or C, well...this is from the chamber of commerce website: Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!

Slipping Through the Cracks? (coaching question)
BikerBabe replied to BikerBabe's topic in Safety and Training
I thought about that, but honestly, I think that would make him even more nervous, or angry with me if I didn't tell him beforehand. He's not the type to like surprises AT ALL. You've met those people who are not the least bit spontaneous...he's one of those. All. Must. Be. Planned. In. Advance. Slipping Through the Cracks? (coaching question)
BikerBabe replied to BikerBabe's topic in Safety and Training
Well, I need some advice, and this seems to be the best place to put it. As a soon-to-be USPA coach, I will become more responsible for the progression of students at our DZ toward their A-licenses. My question concerns one of our students in particular. He was recently signed off to be able to JM himself, but still hasn't met all his A-requirements yet. He has 135 jumps, still rents gear, but is at the DZ almost every weekend. It's to the point that it seems like the instructors at the DZ just let him do his own thing, but I don't want him slipping through the cracks. He has a very nervous personality, coupled with a bit of perfectionism, I think. I have a feeling that part of the reason he hasn't passed many of the requirements for his A is that he doesn't want anyone to see him try something until he thinks he has it down pat. So I think a lot of his 135 jumps have been "practicing" for the "real thing" (meaning when he has an instructor up there with him to sign off the requirements). Obviously he is dedicated to the sport...he's been at it for a while, and he is always at the DZ helping out, etc. I really don't think it's a motivation problem. We've tried to get him to relax, enjoy it, and not be afraid to make mistakes, but it's like hitting a wall. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to possibly break through to this student so he can relax a bit and not let imperfections get to him? Should I even bother trying? Has anyone seen/been in this situation before? I feel almost sad when I see him at the DZ all the time, and he still has to follow all the student rules. I suppose it's always possible that he's perfectly content to stay this way forever, but I don't think so. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup! -
Fellow Skydiver Reports from Front Lines in Iraq
BikerBabe replied to BikerBabe's topic in The Bonfire
Thought you all might be interested to read some of the reports that the reporter our local CBS station sent to Iraq has been sending back. Bob is a skydiver and part-owner of our DZ's airplane. He also flies the station's helicopter when he's not off in Afghanistan or Iraq. He's been (appropriately) assigned to a helicopter unit over there. He's a human-interest type of reporter, and I really like reading his reports because they are very personal. Check it out: http://krqe.com/Global/category.asp?c=38896 Also, please pray for his safety over there...he's a friend of mine! At the DZ or at the bars? At the bars, yes, plenty. I'm not sure about the tandems...I hope they weren't drunk! Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!

My big problem is that my house is 2,000 ft higher in elevation than my DZ, so if I forget to turn it off (which I often do), it's on for a god 3-4 more hours than it needs to be, AND it's "working" during that time. Just a thought for those of you who don't turn yours off...whats the elevation of your house compared to the DZ? woohoo...I'm finally getting out to Perris/Elsinore on the 4th and 5th of April! Anyone planning on being at either place? My team may join me, but I'm not sure we'll do the meet at Elsinore on Saturday...maybe just fun jump. Hubby races at Fontana speedway on Sunday, so I'm tagging along to jump. I just jumped at Emerald Coast this past weekend, as a matter of fact! I had a blast, and I thought the folks there were really friendly. I got my first ever beach jump onto the beach at Pensacola (where some drunk spring breakers hit on me) and some really fun other skydives. They took me out to the Pensacola bars after we landed and we had a great time. They've got a caravan and a cessna. I think you should fall the fall rate that your team is comfortable with.... ...However, a question. If 3 out of four members on a team are comfortable with the fall rate and one wishes it were faster (so she didn't have to fall super-flat and practically knee-fly on cat grips and generally think about fall rate all the time), should the rest of the team pick it up, or should the one who's an anvil slow down? er...can you guess who the anvil is here? Without weights my average fall rate is around 120-122, comfortably. Seems like almost every de-brief ends with the words, "can we please pick up the fall rate?" Am I asking too much? Should I just suck it up, get a looser suit, and drive on? At least I'm tail and usually on the low side of verticals... Most of the coaching is now done through the Arizona Training Center (what used to Be SkydiveU). check out www.skydiveaz.com for the contact numbers. Stephan does most of the scheduling, but manifest may also be able to help you out. They have a great program and are very flexible in that they will work on what you want to work on in an organized way. Definitely call ahead of time, though, since they are busy. I hope the day never comes when we desparately need that oil, because we'd only have about six months to a year at our current rate of consumption to shore up our infrastructure. Here's the USGS survey and economic analysis on oil development in the region. http://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/fs-0028-01/fs-0028-01.htm 7.7 billion barrels won't get us very far. Yep, 97x is run from a little building in my hometown of Oxford, OH. And it's definitely one of the best stations in the country. Read the reviews in the "About Us" section"... Here's some other good ones: http://www.ktao.com/ This one is truly local to Taos, but really funky...they play some cool local New Mexico stuff, as well as more "mainstream" music. www.kfog.com - A good rock station out of San Fran...excellent music and good variety. Trillian is excellent, especially since I was using more than one IM client. BTW, do any of the true geeks out there know who/what "Trillian" is? (I mean, where did the name originate) Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!

ClearChannel and the like have ruined radio. Just listen to any of their stations. Same shit over and over, no more local contests (have you noticed all the contests are no "nationwide"?), and just try to request something. The playlists all come from the central computer at headquarters. My vote, try to find an independent/college station. They actually have CD's in the studio and probably will be able to play what you want to hear, if you call and make a request. Here's a really kickass example: http://www.woxy.com/ It's really alternative, so don't be surprised if they play a lot of stuff you've never heard before. That's OK...this is the station that had me listening to Sarah McLachlan, STP, Tori Amos, and many others waaaaay before they were widely popular.
