We call that the 'Phil Allen Death Roll', I've got some spectacular footage somewhere of the man attempting a barrel roll and dropping like a lead balloon - it's really quite amazing, he looks like he's just been shot down by the enemy. As seen from just before the 7 minute mark in Outpatients take 2 Nice one Gus, but there's a distinct lack of me in that video!

Thanks guys. i'll combine the details. Not sure why I though they were two different incidents, guess due to differences in the dates (probably due to Chris passing away several weeks later) and jump numbers. This thread appears to have moved from the Incidents forum, although I'm not sure why. I have an idea but since the purpose of that forum is to "learn from fatal ... incidents" I thought it was topical. Would have been nice to have an explanation. Also, why does this thread not indicate that it's been moved?

Bags, PCs and sliders are quite small on sub-100 sq. ft. canopies so not that big? Still, this isn't intended for regular jumpers deploying at 2,500, but for those who deploy higher and need every ounce of performance out of the canopy. Worth the effort of stuffing.
-
Interesting, I wonder if there is a chance the canopy could come out of the 'free' bag and deploy 'cleanly'?

PD Removable Deployment System (R.D.S.) Interesting. A pain to re-rig every-time with added risk but cool for the hot swoopers.

I've updated my version of the Skydiving Fatalities Query Engine and I'm hosting it on a separate domain: www.skydivingfatalities.info Since this is not directly related to an incident, please post any comments to this thread in the Safety and Training Forum

Please check out my updated version, hosted at a new domain www.skydivingfatalities.info

If you are going to do it, do it properly. Also, wingsuit-over-gap and wingsuit-by-Andy-Ford. While you are there, check my smokin ass in thiswig in the Wiggaz gallery

Geek! I'll be up at Langar this weekend for the Freshers thing if the weather looks remotely feasible. So will Fraser and Dweeb. Let's flock?
-
Sure! He certainly has the Fun Jumper's best interests at heart and it's always good to have a wild card in the mix!

No worries Jim! Indeed. I wrote Mike in last time. Not sure I know enough about Chris. Like somebody said, if he's good enough for Mike...however, to me, he didn't come off very well last time around.

Hey Jim, I'm also a USPA member! No ripping was intended, both Jan and Don are getting my vote!

Was going to PM the guy and ask but he hasn't logged on in over a month and has only posted once. My rigger packed my Voodoo 2 a little differently this time and the riser covers are more difficult to close. It seems that packing reserves in a Voodoo with the right distribution is an art. How many times and by how many riggers was Tim's rig packed by and what was there experience with Voodoos?

Is that Andy? Unless that's an opinion you can back up with reason I don't think you should be perpetuating it. The CR quote is very valid though

Yeah, I liked the switches between the wingsuit formation and the jet formation fly-by. Thought hooks weren't allowed at the boogie ;-)

It's there Nice job Fraser. Some fantastic shots. Wish I could have been there :-(

This has been causing quite a stink on rec.skydiving by a guy who is running for th BOD, Don L. "Treetop" Jardine Jan Meyer has, someone else who's running for the BOD.

Partial closing of canopy in turbulent atmospheric conditions Searching for this has also turned up that the Ninja was pitched as a less-extreme cross-braced canopy which may go to answer my question as to why another cross-braced wasn't being considered.
-
Ninja is crossbraced. Just wondering why you are not considering Velocity, Extreme, or Xaos?

Think the information came from The Freefall Research page. I wouldn't appreciate it if my "copyrighted" text was copied verbatim. edited to add: not that it is my site. Sorry if it appeared that way

Err, how longs a piece of string? Have you had twists that bad before? Could you get out of them? How long did it take? Was the suit hindering you? What was the canopy and loading? If I was on a 2:1 cross-braced I probably wouldn't give it as much time as a 1:1 7-cell. What's your hard-deck? (and is your hard-deck different when jumping a wingsuit?) If it's 1600 say, then you had another 1000 feet to work it out. The amount of time this would have given you depends on the canopy. There's no guarantee the reserve is going to work, so I might have worked it a bit longer, but then you run the risk of getting carried away and being too low. You chopped and lived so it worked out, but it's always good to re-evaluate. The bigger issue may be to address what caused the twists in the first place...

IT IS HERE!!! Questions, comments, concerns...
cpoxon replied to kevin922's topic in Wing Suit Flying
Good, maybe you'll shut up about it now! :-P It is supposed to be quite tight so you can get the leg wing nice and taught. I rather it was like this than no tension on the wing. Simple answer, don't bend over to put them on! My Skyflyer is not as bad as my GTi was but then my Skyflyer is generally loser than my GTi. When standing up, you should be able to wiggle, shuffle and shake your foot into the bootie. Once it's in, you have tension on it and the suit gives in other places when you bend over to zip up (down?) the leg. The leg is a bit floppy and if you can't get into it freely, stand on the tab on the tip of the bootie with the other foot to keepit still whilst you guide your foot in. Some planes just don't have the headroom to allow this (i.e. Caravan) so I prefer to have my booties on before boarding the plane (as long as boarding isn't an issue (i.e. high door and no steps)). Alternatively, get a friendly jumper on the plane to kneel before you on the ride to altitude and do them up for you; makes great tandem footage. I think you just freaked yourself out. Have you done many hop and pops/crew exits? It's no big deal. If not, maybe some practices would be good. Make sure everything is collapsed, and evenly; if something is out and unsymetric, that will flip you. How much effort are you putting into your exit? You could be overdoing it and put in an involuntary turn. Take it easy and relax. -
How to make a 0.3X wide angle lens for $45
cpoxon replied to cpoxon's topic in Photography and Video
You could pay $175 dollars for a 0.3X lens from Max Cohn at Generation Freefly, or a bit cheaper ($140) if you import direct from Japan (although shipping and duty may eat up the saving). A cheaper version is available from Way Cool Industries in Australia for US$64 (A$115 - last time I calculated that exchange rate in July it equated to US $52!) plus another $11 for shipping. I made one of the cheap ones myself. The lens is a Raynox 0.3X clip-on semi-fisheye windeangle lens. I got mine in the UK from Jessops It's a clip-on lens and not a very strong one at that. I broke the clips off, removed the spring, glued the clips back in with Araldite to block light coming in from the side that would have occured if the clips were left off, and glued a 37-37mm spacer ring to the lens. I also got one of these from Jessops. This ring will fit PC-100, 110, 115, 120 cameras. If you have a PC-7, 10, 1, 3, 5, 9, PC-101, you'll need a 30mm-37mm step-up ring Obviously, the quality isn't going to be as good as the $200 lens, but at the price, you can't complain. Total cost £28.98 (US$45.18 at today's exchange rate). If you are not in the UK and can source these lenses cheaply then this is a good option.
