Why? In Norway, they don't sell kittens or puppies in stores. It's viewed as wrong to give a kitten or puppy as a gift. Until recently, rabbits and mice were sold in pet stores, but that's also getting increasingly uncommon. People get in contact with breeders via the internet or ads in the newspaper. The pet stores survive, and thrive on selling pet food and accesoaries. The only thing it takes, is a change in attitude amongst people, and to stop buying kittens or puppies from pet stores. If they lose their market, they will stop. If people "rescue" puppies from pet stores by GIVING their money to the people who put them there, that only encourages them to make more. It makes no sense. People need to be educated about this, and I think it's possible to stop this even in America. People who want pets generally care about animals. Riding a horse can be done very, very safely. I used to ride a horse I knew so well, that I could keep the reins completely slack, and I knew what he's going to do before he does it, including taking a fright and running off. I'm not saying that it's safe, wrong kind of person on wrong kind of horse, can lead to problems. Not knowing how to behave around horses can also cause injuries, never stand where you can be kicked. In horse riding, your buddy isn't going to collide with you in freefall, but this is a real risk in skydiving.
