I work for an ambulance service...I'm an EMT but due to staff shortages I mostly work in dispatch. One of my alltime favorite stupid calls...a nursing home calls at 3AM to send an 88 year old woman to the ER. I ask why. Their answer is, "she's lethargic." (NO SHIT SHE'S LETHARGIC...IT'S 3AM AND SHE'S 88 YEARS OLD) I asked if there was any other reason for her to go the ER and they said no. Another one of our goodies...a different nursing home calls at 4am for a woman whose pulse is so fast the nurse can't count fast enough and it has to be well into the 200's. The crew gets there, the woman is asleep in her bed. The medic goes to take the pulse and it's 70. That nurse needs to go back to school. We also get alot of people who call us direct instead of calling 911. I got 1 little old lady who calls for an ambulance for her husband. I ask what the problem is, she says, "I don't know." I say, "well why do you want him taken to the hospital." She says, "I don't know I just do." Those are just a few examples.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one who has to deal with complete idiots at work on a daily basis.

This is really bugging me. And I know as soon as I see the answer I'll hate myself even more because it'll be obvious.

As to the working too hard thing...the really nice thing about my job is so long as all hell isn't breaking loose I can watch TV, sleep (night shift only) and/or post whore.

It's well known at work that I'm a whore when it comes to overtime. It's pretty much the only way to make money here. I'm always the first to volunteer for an open shift. Typically, I never know how much if any overtime I'm going to get in a week. It all depends on either someone calling off or all hell breaking loose. Well, thanks to a fellow dispatcher going on vacation next week I'm scheduled a guarnteed 60 hours. People need to go on vacation more often.
