  1. I don't disagree. I was assuming an Otter, which from what I've seen don't tend to "fall out of the sky". It's damn near impossible to stall an Otter for CG issues, unless the pilot is being really dumb. Cessnas "falling out the sky", are rare, too. Most common problem seems to be engine-outs, sadly related to fuel exhaustion. Even with a Cessna with a CG induced stall, there's plenty of time for 4 people to get out in a quick and orderly manner. In this case I'd be more concerned about being pinned by G's... Exiting a Cessna inteligently is even more important because of the possibility of tail strikes. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  2. Start here. Select Kenko, from the dropdown list, select 'wide angle' from the second dropdown list, select the appropriate thread size (which you can find in your cameras manual) from the third, hit 'search', and see what comes up. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  6. Somehow I went wrong. I live downtown and work in Chicago's western subburbs. Driving in rush hour takes an hour... and taking public transit takes an hour and 10. So I take public transit. I ride the CTA subway out to the end of the line, then take a subburban bus to my office. In the morning, I leave home at 8:00 to get to work by 9:15. In the evening I leave work at 5:00, get home at 6:15. It's not so bad. Thus is life in the big city. The plan when we bought our condo was for me to work downtown. Hopefully I'll get back to that soon. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  7. I don't know of anyone jumping those lenses. There's two risks. 1) That the printed magnification number isn't accurate. The .5 is really a .5, or a .3. 2) That the lens mounts aren't strong, and you'll lose the lens on the first jump. You can get a Sony or a Kenko wide angle lens for the same price or less at www.bhphotovideo.com, if you'd done a search you'd know this. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  9. I imagine its only a matter of time before a teacher gets arrested for telling students what happens if you combine two popular cleaning supplies: chlorine bleach and ammonia. Hint: Don't try it. Teaching kids the basics of what will kill them is a good thing. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  10. I disagree. You do not need much separation to be safe. If you give one second, it'll take 20 seconds to clear a full Otter. If you give half a second, even less time. A half second is what exists between two people going one after another single file. If you neglect to go one after another, then people get hurt, the door gets clogged, and people get stuck, and don't make it. From 2000 feet, you've got two minutes in a standard engine out. Be safe. Don't rush. Always. That's the point of doing the drill. Ever watch a CRW team exit? Safe, orderly, with good separation, and quick. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  11. I think you misunderstand. The farmer is quite nice, and the DZ gets along with him reasonably well. The basis of any good relationship is respect. Chicagoland skydiving Center is one of the nations oldest skydivng centers, people have been jumping there since the late 50's. Despite that, they STILL seem to get along reasonably well with all their neighbors. There are no "McNasty's". The DZ respects the farmer by offering to cover any crop losses. The farmer in turn does not complain of jumpers landing in his fields. Criminal tresspass is not an issue because the DZ has been proactive in managing their relationships. The DZ does not pass on the fees to the jumper. They cover it, because they know happy neighbors are in their interest, and they don't want to discourage jumpers from landing "Safe, not close". I offered the anecdote not as a way to manage an already broken relationship, but as an explanation of why not all "off landings" are tresspass. I have no doubt that other DZ's have similar arangements with their neighbors. $20 per event is a significant order of magnitude higher than what I'm talking about. $1 per event is more realistic approximation. The intent is to refund the farmer for crop damage, it'd take a hell of a lot of damage to incur $20. Edit: Just to avoid confusion, this has been a tangent to the original discussion. The Regional director in question is NOT the one for Illinois. The DZ in question from the start of this thread id NOT Chicagoland. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  13. Keep in mind, this is not just a theoretical risk. http://www.skydivingfatalities.info/search.asp?MinDate=12%2F14%2F1995&MaxDate=2%2F6%2F2005&Place=Lodi&State=CA&Country=&Category=&MinAge=17&MaxAge=78&UnknownAge=on&MinJumps=0&MaxJumps=15000&UnknownJumps=on&AAD=&RSL=&Description=ring+sight&DescriptionOperator=AND&Lessons=&LessonsOperator=OR Generally, once you mount a ring sight, it's unwise to take it off as then you have to re-aim it. What do you need to buy? Nothing. You need nothing. A paper ring would be a good start, and an inexpensive orange lolipop like the one here http://www.pia.com/skydance/accessor.htm are both reasonably good places to start. If you do go with the ringsite, what's most important is how you mount it. I continue to see horribly ugly ring-site instalation jobs, for which there really is no excuse. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  14. Think of it as a building on fire, lots of people inside with only a small door. If everyone panics and rushes the door, people die from being crushed. Likewise, if you panic in a plane emergency and bail out in an unsafe manner, people will get hurt. Keep in mind, when doing 'clear and pulls', you really don't need a lot of separation between individuals. It's not like we're talking about an 8 second delay between 4-ways. If you practice the drill in a safe manner, you'll execute it in a safe manner. Most airplane emergencies at 2000 will be landable, of those that aren't most will have at least 2 minutes until impact. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  15. If she's trying to encase a closing pin in glass, why does the closing pin need to be metal? It seems to me she's always going to have cooling issues because of the wide range of thermal expansion issues, so why not pick to materials that are closer? Specifically, I'm thinking of some kind of clay, porcelain or other earthenware that can be made to appear as metal. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  16. Your instructor was wrong. Legally, a skydiver is *not* an aircraft. A skydiver does not have any of the legal protections a pilot does for landing in an open field. The difference is obvious. A skydiver intentionally put themselves in the situation when they jumped from the airplane. A pilot with an aircraft emergency did not. To avoid breaking tresspassing laws, always check the spot before exiting. You are responsible for where you land. Obviously, risking prosecution by landing in an open field is a FAR smarter choice than injuring yourself in a low turn trying to "make it back". Many dropzones have agreements with neighboring farmers to allow jumpers to land on their field with permission, in the event of an unplanned off-landing, so the issue is often moot. Make sure you know what are acceptable off-landing locations. Use them. At Chicagoland, the agreement states that at the end of the season the farmer will inspect his crop, and send a bill for every broken stalk of corn. To me, that seems entirely reasonable. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  17. I think you're missing the point. Even in an emergency, bail-outs need to be done safely. This is precisely why bail-out drills are a good thing. Practice the drill safely, then when the emergency comes you'll do it for real - safely. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  18. I started by drilling a hole in the cover so I could put the plug through it, keeping the other holes covered. Eventually I decided that was too much of a hassle, and ripped the cover off. I haven't noticed any performance difference. I also put a hole in the CC, so I could plug in the Cam-eye after already having put the camera in the CC. The wire ran outside the CC. Eventually I switched to a d-box - which seems like the smart way to go. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  19. I started with the paper sticker, and it worked reasonably well - especially because I was using a freefly helmet, I just didn't see a way to rig up a proper ring-site without creating a giant HOOK snag-hazzard. I used the paper circle while I was learning the basics of camera flying. Once I started to get paid I upgraded to a flat-top pro, one feature of which is a very low forhead section, which made making a small, minimal hazard ring-sight a possibility. I bought a used orange lolli-pop for $20, and it does what I need it to. At some point I will upgrade to a Finlay ring-sight, but for now the cheap thing works just fine. You do need SOME kind of sight, if you want to have any kind of success getting good video. You do not need the best and most expensive until you're at the point where you'll be refunding money if you miss "the shot". The cheapest solution is also the safest - a paper ring, so that sounds like a real good place to start. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  20. I think it's clear exactly what his morals are. That's the problem. This just shows how screwed up his morals are, and that when he talks about "Family values", he's talking out of his ass. See, morality isn't the binary black or white issue the last election made it out to be. It's relative. Things aren't "good at all costs", or "bad at all costs". I can understand that there are some people who think that homosexuality is wrong. People have a right to their opinions, and people have a right to disagree. I can not understand someone who would put his child out on the street because she's sleeping with someone of the wrong gender, then stand on a national pulpet and lecture the entire nation about morality, pretending to be an authority. That morality is fucked. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  25. What an odd suggestion. She's 19 years old. I don't know of any parents of 19 year olds who have any amount of "control" over their children. Whats most interesting to me, is that while Alan Keyes never misses a chance to lecture people on family values and morality, what he is actually doing is actively destroying his own family to further his career. Contrast that with Dick Cheyney who had mostly positive things to say about Mary's lifestyle, and you see a striking difference of character. I wonder, when Alan Keyes was saying mean and hurtfull things at Mary, if he was really targetting that message to Maya. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
