How many DZs shoot digital Tandem photos?
AndyMan replied to SafetyNate's topic in Photography and Video
Chicagoland is going all-digital this year. Since it's still "winter" up here, I'm not sure exactly how they plan on doing it. I suspect they'll hand a CD to the student imediately after the jump. Not sure if they plan on selling prints on-site. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. -
I agree. Not only that, he would have been welcomed in open arms, and still just as "succesful" and never questioned. Iinnocence by association makes as little sense as the guilty equivalent. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

I think there's a fairly large group of people out there who think in polarities. When people in this group think of another person, they pigeon-hole that person as someone who's inheriently good, or inheriently evil. Personally, I see elements of traits like that in critics of politicians, and posters to this forum. The idea that people are inheriently good or evil, with no inbetween. If one of these people has reason to think someone else is good - say, because they go to the same church, they must be "Good People". Such a person couldn't possibly be capable of committing something like that, to consider it is really not even an option. Likewise, such a person might look at a gay man, knowing that their church labels gay people as sinners, which makes that gay man evil. The gay man is then the prime suspect whenever a child gets molested, or someone gets raped or murdered. Stereotype is not restricted to race. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

As you continue your jumping career, you'll slowly come to the realisation that your instructors are only human. They are not infallible... Sometimes, they even talk out of their asses just like the rest of us do. This would be such a case. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Drug issue.....should i tell the DZ owner???
AndyMan replied to SSkydiver's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Get used to the idea that people who take drugs are often the same people who jump. That isn't news. Often times you'll see people smoke pot the night before jumping. Occaisionally people die after having jumped stoned. Presumably people are jumping stoned and not dieing fairly regularly. Some dropzones do better jobs than other of keeping drugs off the DZ, but never have I been to a DZ that cares in the slightest what people do with their own private lives - as it should be. Running to the DZO, telling him "Jonny does drugs! Ban him!" will only label you a rat, will earn you no friends, but more importantly will get you nowhere in terms of improving safety. Now if you knew that "Jonny" actually jumps while stoned, my advice would be very different. If you're only complaining about his lifestyle when he's not at the DZ, then I think you have little to stand on. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. -

I was amazed. Just yesterday, Chicago had it's first arrest for drug dealing because of a CCTV camera. They've been in place for over a year in "high crime" and "drug marketplace" type neighbourhoods... And they just arrested their very first dealer. Amazing. The city thinks this is a great success, and is flogging the example to news organizations. Myself, I think one arrest in over a year is pretty lame. On the other hand, you'd have to be pretty dumb to get caught by one of these. The city mounts them prominently, even putting a strobe light on top. It's painfully obvious where they're mounted. The cameras are mounted behind bullet proof glass and are mounted on a gimbal, so it can be tough to tell where exactly the camera is pointing. The city claims their intended goal is to reduce crime, not "catch them in the act". Chicago has seen a reduction in crime lately. Whether it's directly attributable to the cameras, is just a blip in the numbers remains to be seen. I suspect the reduction in violent crime is more likely attributed to police focusing on certain neighborhoods, plus the creation of "rapid reaction" forces. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-0502250216feb25,1,6054534.story __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Largely true. It's ALMOST false. Fosters is technically imported beer, although I suspect most drinkers would be very surprised to know that it's imported from Canada. All of the Fosters product sold on the American market is brewed at Molson's Toronto brewery. Fosters chose to partner with Molson solely so the beer would be brewed in Canada, and could thus legally carry the "imported" label. 90% of Fosters brewed in Toronto is exported to the US. When sold in Canada, it does not claim to be "imported". _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

I'm amazed this myth still exists. Mass market Canadian beer is no stronger than its American equivalent. Molson Canadian and Labatt Blue both have the same strength as Bud, MGD, Coors, or virtually any other "regular strength" beer sold on the US market. In the 70's and 80's, Canadian and American beer manufacturers would label their beer differently. Canada would label its beer with Percent Alcohol By Volume, while American beer manufacturers would label it with Percent Alcohol By Weight. The different measuring techniques resulted in a higher number being printed on beer sold in Canadian markets. This myth is encouraged by the higher popularity of micro-breweries in Canada than the US. Canadian micro-breweries do tend to make stronger beer, but they're often not mass marketed. Take for example Unibroue, out of Quebec - who makes great tasting beer like "Maudite" - 8%, La Fin du Monde, at 9%, and Terrible - at 11%. Mass Market Canadian beer is no stronger than its American equivalent, but I suspect that on average, Micro-brews do tend to be stronger. This concludes your sporadic beer accuracy lecture. _Am (former Molson employee, and trained brewmaster) __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

No Skype, but Craichead and I just made the switch to Vonage. $14.99/month, a real telephone, and free north America long distance. It's fantastic. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

I think we're going about this the wrong way. Clearly, this is the new Canon standard plug. Conceptus needs to change the default plug on their switches. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

In all honesty, in the 5 years I've been hanging around, this is the first I've ever heard of this issue. I think I do that anyways, though. Why is it important? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

I suspect that happens all the time. "40 KG of plutonium gone missing" makes headlines. "40 KG of plutonium found exactly where they left it" does not. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
