I have a recurring dream about dislocating my shoulder, being unable to pull. To complicate matters, I then brainfreeze and don't go silver with the other arm. Fortunately it ends with my Cypres firing. I read this as my biggest fear in skydiving - not equipment failures, but MY failure - both physical and mental. Equipment failures I know I can deal with. One of the reasons I love this sport is that ultimately, it comes down to me. I have to act to save my life every time I leave that airplane. The reason I love this sport so much is that I get to overcome one of my biggest fears everytime I jump. Nah, that wasn't TMI. _Am ICQ: 5578907 MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com AIM: andrewdmetcalfe Yahoo IM: ametcalf_1999

Pulease, I wish. Hmph. Long frickin day. I was up until 3am working last night, then got up at 6am. Worked again until 7:30, spend an hour and a half stuck in traffic. Got to my first meeting half an hour late. VERY IMPORTANT MEETING. Shit. Spend all morning in meeting, hop back in the car, grab a bag of chips for lunch. Drive to next meeting. Spend all afternoon in second meeting, presenting the work I finished a few hours earlier. Client is thrilled. 3 margaritas later, I'm home, chatting with friends and my hometown hockey team, the guys I literally grew up with, are kicking ass. What a day. It only woulda been better had I jumped or been jumped... _Am ICQ: 5578907 MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com AIM: andrewdmetcalfe Yahoo IM: ametcalf_1999

My ratio isn't great - 1200 posts and 300 jumps. I certainly don't think I'm an expert, but I do think I'm qualified to answer certain questions and pass on certain kinds of advice. I think I've learned more in my 300 jumps then some do in 500. I'm a pretty introspective person, I'm also the type that seeks out knowledge by referencing people who know much more then I. I stand on the shoulders of giants. I am two accuracy jumps under my stiletto shy of a D licence. This weekend, I hope. I trust that should I be wrong someone will put me in my place. _Am ICQ: 5578907 MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com AIM: andrewdmetcalfe Yahoo IM: ametcalf_1999

The port Oracle "Listens" on is defined in the "Listener". Go into Start/Programs/Oracle/Network Administration/Net 8 Assistant and look at the configuration of /local/listeners/LISTENER. That's where you specify the TCP/IP port. _Am ICQ: 5578907 MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com AIM: andrewdmetcalfe Yahoo IM: ametcalf_1999

Oracle 8i out of the box on Windows 2000 has always worked just fine for us with just port 1521 on the foreign system. Perhaps you should be more concerned with the outgoing port? I just did a netstat, and it looked something like this: C:\>netstat Active Connections Proto Local Address Foreign Address State TCP BUILDVIEW-AM:1885 someForeignHost.net:1521 ESTABLISHED TCP BUILDVIEW-AM:1951 someForeignHost.net:1521 TIME_WAIT TCP BUILDVIEW-AM:1968 someForeignHost.net:1521 TIME_WAIT ICQ: 5578907 MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com AIM: andrewdmetcalfe Yahoo IM: ametcalf_1999

I understand that once you get away from the physical act itself, the motivation for rape is not sexual - it is a desire to control, degrade, even humiliate women. I think this is pretty well documented, but I'm a pinko liberal artsie type. I also don't walk down the street wishing to have sex with woman in front of me. I actually find the idea that we're controlled by our libido's a touch insulting. I don't like the idea that we all have these internal battles to control ourselves. I'm will agree with Bill to a point, yes - clearly we have a biological need and desire to reproduce. There's a huge difference between this and fighting internal battles not to rape. I'm not sure how children fit into this. I don't think pedophiles have an urge to degrade or humiliate the way that "normal" rapists do. I don't think abusing children is an act of degredation. I wonder if its roots lie closer to the idea of innocence lost. I reject the idea that allowing priests to have sex would have prevented the recent tragedies. These priests did this because they were pedophiles, not because they weren't having sex. Like I said, rape is not based upon sexual desire, it's based upon a desire for degredation and humiliation. About 10 years ago Canada went through a similar tragedy involved protestant priests and the boys of Mount Cashel Orphanage. I believe that protesdant priests are allowed to marry. I also reject the idea that homosexuality has anything to do with it, but that's a different debate. _Am ICQ: 5578907 MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com AIM: andrewdmetcalfe Yahoo IM: ametcalf_1999

Carrie, I'm going to step into this debate, only gingerly. This topic comes up periodically on the Gear and Rigging Forum, and the Safety and Training forum. Every time it comes up, the same arguments get rehashed over and over again. The only difference is the people involved. The debates usually involve someone sort of like yourself, who's got their opinion, and think it's a good opinion. They usually get this opinion from someone they respect. Maybe this other person is someone they look up to, maybe it's even an instructor, or even a head instructor or S&TA. The great thing about the internet and DZ.COM is that you can bypass self appointed experts and go straight to the source. You CAN ask Bill Booth what he thinks about RSL's. Email would probably be a good way to do this. You could also ask Bill Von Nowak, or Allan Binebose, or you could email John Leblanc, Brian Germaine, or any other respected industry profesional. You could ask people who ARE experts, and not the self appointed kind. Or you could go reading... You could use the search function in the gear and rigging forum. There you'd see the opinions of pretty much everyone I just mentioned, except for the notable exception of John Leblanc. For some reason he won't come here. You could read the opinions of people who are respected exactly for their opinions and knowledge. One of the reasons this thread has been rather negative and even insulting is that the issue came up real recently, and a great long thread insued. It seemed like it would never die. It was exactly this thread that caused BillVon to write the article that's currently on the homepage - you know, the "5 Myth's of RSL's" article. The article was written for a reason, specifically to stop these kinds of questions being constantly raised. As someone who'se read rec.skydiving and now dz.com for quite some time, the debates are simply getting tiring. The debates are always insightful though, and it's good that they come up - I think everyone just wishes a few monthes between rounds. I know both BillVon and BillBooth get off on making people think about issues. Even though they've both posted with some facetiousness, I hope you'll take something out of this... maybe even consider putting an RSL on your rig. I posted this not because I wanted to contribute to the debate, rather I wanted to explain why some very smart people reacted rather harshly to it. _Am ICQ: 5578907 MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com AIM: andrewdmetcalfe Yahoo IM: ametcalf_1999

Bill, I think I'm about to open a can of worms. Bear with me. This is one of the reasons I'm not terribly fond of the way that you've pretty much neglected your patents on the three ring. The point is moot now, since I do understand that patent is expired. I had this exact same thought in the pilot chute thread earlier. Had you kept and inforced those patents, you could have dictated acceptable manufacturing procedures and insisted on a good quality control. I'm not suggesting you charge the manufacturers bags of money, although this certainly might've put your kids through college...

I dated a 19 year old when I was 25. Even though it was only six years, six years is a huge gap at that time in our life. That was one of the most rewarding relationships I've been in - and I'm not talking about the sex. Age is just a number, it's completely arbitrary. It hasn't meant anything since highschool, I think. One of my good friends is 30 and dating a 22 year old. They have a truely wonderful, loving and equal relationship. I see nothing wrong with age gaps. Physical age is literally the last thing I would consider when approaching a new relationship. _Am ICQ: 5578907 MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com AIM: andrewdmetcalfe Yahoo IM: ametcalf_1999

Yeah, sounds great. We coulda done the same thing with the blacks in LA 10 years ago... hmm, that woulda worked! How about anyone from eastern-europe in the 80's? Cool! Wow. I know tons of jumpers who swap out their own mains. I had no idea this requried a rigger to do. Am I alone here? Would this go so far as to swap a main complete with risers? What about detaching the three rings to exercise them? Doesn't this qualify as dissasemply and reassembly? _Am (confused) ICQ: 5578907 MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com AIM: andrewdmetcalfe Yahoo IM: ametcalf_1999

Zennie, that's exactly the relationship I had with my ex. I'd give her one day out of the weekend, she didn't complain about me jumping. It worked. In fact, I'd say this is a pretty good way to go. She also did a tandem once, and loved it. She truely did understand why I did it. I guess I was lucky that way. We broke up for unrelated resons... now I've decided that I'm not going to date a non-skydiver in the near future. That's just my choice because I'd rather spend both days at the DZ. But it can work. _Am ICQ: 5578907 MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com AIM: andrewdmetcalfe Yahoo IM: ametcalf_1999
