  1. The population density of Chicago and Toronto is virtually identical. As is the economics, demographics, industrial trends, and even social history. Comparing Toronto and Chicago is a whole lot more valid then comparing Chicago and Houston, for example. Chicago had 600 violent murders last year. Toronto had 40. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  3. Well, yeah - you can. You can look at countries that don't have that fear. In most cases, they seem to have lower crime rates then the us... Granted that when talking about two different countries, all things aren't equal. That's why Canada is such a good example, because for the most part, the important parts *are* equal... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  4. I suspect it would have a smiliar effect as adding cross-bracing - make for a more rigid canopy. I don't see it being any better then cross-bracing, though. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  5. I'd agree with you, except in many of these cases it's not the dipshits who're getting killed. It's their kids, their kids friends, and in one case even a cop. A few monthes ago a kid took one to school for "show and tell", and shot his teacher. On an individual level, I like guns. I like hunting, target practice, and sometimes just blowing things up. I don't have a gun largely because of the liability - I live in downtown Chicago. That said, once you step back from the personal issues, I can't understand the societal need. The one person who actually needs to use one to defend themselves is offset by the 6 that get killed accidentaly. That doesn't make sense to me. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  8. I tend to think that someones opinion on the matter isn't valid until they've seen and heard the sound of someone cratering. The sound in particular, has stayed with me ever since... I'm amazed that people are arguing even the existance of the problem. It seems that's the one thing that should be given. I would be more content if people were to argue about different solutions, rather then if there even is a problem. That should be given. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  10. I found tent city got chlostrophobic, it was really packed in especially by the end of the week. I'll be tenting in the RV area this year, probably. Or, maybe over by the C-130 bar - this was less crowded last year. I'd recomend avoiding the "main" tent city, though. Staying up t'il 3 and waking at 7 is great the first few days, but by the end of the week you'll look like you haven't slept in a month. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  11. Actually, those two incidents directly involved people I would like to consider personal friends. One of them, I did consider a very good personal friend. RIP, Paul. Yes, 2 people relatively close to me going in for the similar reasons in six monthes time gives me great fear of it happeneing again. I hope next time it's someone I don't know. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  12. I really like it being tied to license, it gives people a relatively easy way to get around the restrictions. That said, I don't think restrictions in themselves solve the problem. People are cratering with all levels of experience, the problem is not limited to those with with lower jump numbers. Holding people back until they get "experience" is not enough, we need to hold people back until they have both experience AND knowledge. Demonstration of the skills required to keep yourself alive at high wingloadings need to be done before progressing to those higher wingloadings. Build these skill requirements into the licencing requirements, and I'll be with you 100%. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  13. I usually make an omelet, but I'm trying to fix some fall-rate issues. Today I had some wheat-rye bread I had made tuesday with strawberry preserves, and a bowl of yogurt. Rather simple, but the bread is *sooo* good... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  14. It's odd how two people can look at the exact same numbers and come to wildly different conclusions. There have been two people killed this year because of actions done by someone else who was completely or jointly responsible for the incident. A jumper in lake wales was taken out by someone swooping, he died. Roger Nelson died after coliding with Todd Fey, and each takes part of the blame. This is exactly my biggest fear right now, that people who choose not to take the added risk of swooping are having that risk forced upon them by those they jump with. This situation does not describe the incident at Skydive Chicago, but it does describe the one at Lake Wales. I worry that there will be more. I wish more DZ's would go the way of dropzones like Perris that put their swoop pond FAR from their main landing area. Every DZ should have a swoop lane reserved for the swoopers. People should not be swooping in the same airspace as those who aren't. Even those people who want to swoop, but don't use the pond need to keep well away from those flying straight in approaches. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  15. With respect to Cypres's, they have a fixed lifetime. It is likely that the cheap ones you see online are approaching their end of life, and will need replacement soon. Also, cypreses need batteries changed every two years, and sent to the manufacturer every 4 years. It is likely that the cheap models you're finding online need both these costly maintenance functions performed. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  20. Mom gave me the ring back at easter, and I'd been sitting on it ever since. I'd had a few conditions in mind - I wanted work to be going well, I wanted to be getting paid. I'd wanted to have met her family. Well, both conditions came true. Work is going well, I am being paid. I met her parents 2 weekends ago, and got along nicely. That left only one thing - how to do it? Should I do the whole expensive restaurant thing? Down on one knee? Drop it in a glass of champagne? Have a baker put it inside a fortune cookie? I supose there's a lot of men in the world who would do it that way, but I'm not one of them. Nor, do i think craichead is the kind of girl who'd insist on it. Plus, I don't have a lot of money these days, because I've barely gotten paid for the last six monthes. (I'm an entrepreneur). Eventually I decided that waiting around for the "perfect" oportunity was silly, and time was passing. So, I threw out any idea of doing some big expensive grandiose proposal, and cut to the chase. Sprung the ring, and we've been glowing ever since. Truth be told, I'd almost sprung it on her the night before. Some people might have wanted to do it in a very different style, but I don't care. I do most things in life my own way, for the better or worse. I've never been more sure of any decision I've ever made. Thank you all for your friendship and support. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  22. I've had discouraging experiences with Sony machines. They seem to use obscure hardware, with even more obscure drivers. The last time I tried to downgrade from XP to 2000, it took me days to properly configure the video card. Likewise, the sound system will use obscure drivers which will be hard to find for any but the default preconfigured operating system. Likewise, upgrading to more a recent OS then the one shipped will be dificult. I've had very good luck with Dell Inspirons, first a 5000 and now a 8200. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
