  1. Nope, definately not fat. I'm sure it's an effective ad, tho - It targets peoples insecurities. After all, EVERYBODY thinks they could shed a pound or two... If they only advertise to people who DO need to lose weight, they're seriously limitinig their market. By targetting EVERYONE, they've got a whole lot more clients available. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

    power outages

Yes. Also, CNN reporting the Canadian Prime Ministers office is reporting a lightening strike to a power plant on the New York side of the Niagara River caused a cascading series of switched circuit breakers. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Also, oddly enough an article ran in todays New York Times (still available) describing the use of semiconductors to mitigate large power surges... http://www.nytimes.com/2003/08/14/technology/14GRID.html _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

And in other breaking news, a great chorus of laughter could be heard clear across the country, apparently originating from California. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Correction - this is the THIRD time in recent history this has happened... 1965, 1977, and now. Each time it's suposedly "fixed" so a failure won't cascade the next time something blows... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Heh.. I just called Mom at the cottage, her power was out because the cottage is inbetween Toronto and Ottawa, but she had no idea it was any bigger then local. They were still planning on going into town for a restaurant dinner... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

    power outages

A simplified explanation of the grid is here: http://www.msnbc.com/news/297115.asp?0cv=CA01 As for the stock market, it would've handled it well. 9/11 was more then enough of a primer to handle a power problem. The single biggest reason I doubt it's terrorism is that the continents best engineers couldn't figure out how the last one happened, so there's no way a terrorist could plan for it. It really does take a hell of a lot of bad luck for this to happen - the system is designed so it couldn't. I'm glad I'm in chicago, tho... I was in Toronto the last time this happened, about 12 years ago IIRC. Sure did make life painful... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

The electricity grid even extends to Mexico. It doesn't care about borders. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

You are 100% wrong. The power grid is exactly that, a grid. They're SUPPOSED to be able to maintain the grid with mutiple independent failures, but often that is not the case. The last time this happened, a tripped circuit breaker in new york brought down the entire east coast through a domino-like effect. This happened almost an hour ago. If it were terrorists, we'd have heard by now. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Yup, looks like all of New York city, Boston, Cleveland, detroit, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal is down. Incredibly, this is the second time this has happened in my lifetime. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  11. Ravens came off my list of possible canopies to buy when I saw how they handled the recall... How the canopy performs is now irrelevant. I don't see how a company expects us to trust a product they won't stand behind. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  12. When I had a hundred jumps, I thought that too. Now with 500 jumps, I'm wise enough to know that I was wrong then, and don't know squat now. Those who never figure this seem to be the ones who get hurt. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

    Making sausages

Looks fun. So far I've been using my kitchen-aid for bread, pasta and burgers... I haven't tried sausages yet. The pasta has been awesome, but my burgers have sucked because I've been unwilling to add fat... What recipe did you use? The one that came with the attachment? BTW - my kitchen aid is over 20 years old. These things rock! _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  14. Ok, I've heard this a few times. Why isn't this better then focusing the impact on a tiny, 25 cent piece area when you hit unprotected? I've asked a few doctors, none of them have agreed with your theory. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  15. I've flown out of Midway with my rig countless times. I always take my rig carry-on. The last time, the guy watching the x-ray machine pulled it out of the machine, held it up, and said "this is a parachute, right"? I said yes, "cool, I heard these are OK now". He handed it to me and let me go. This was 8 monthes ago... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  16. I permanently got rid of any and all login problems, by a bit of trickery. Try it, it'll work. Create a bookmark or favorite for DZ.com. Make the URL for that favorite to be the following URL: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/login/login.cgi ?userid=USERID&pw=PASSWORD&url=/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi&login=Logon&remember_cookie=1 Make sure it all goes on one line, and replace USERID and PASSWORD with your own. Using this favorite will log you into dz.com everytime you use the favorite, and will then redirect you back to the forums. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  19. What I've seen, is that when tandems make a reservation they're charged a $50 deposit, and that deposit is non-refundable. Rain checks are issued and are valid for 12 monthes. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  20. I changed my parents over to Mozilla last weekend. Trust me when I say this: If my parents can figure it out, ANYONE can figure it out. Mozilla is wonderful - it loads pages faster, remembers passwords, automatically fills out form info... and blocks popups. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  21. This never made sense to me. There's a whole lot more vertical movement on a large RW jump as divers come down. Is this a 3-d jump, too? Seems to me people've been tracking long before any freeflyers came along... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

    Porn Crackdown

I don't think it's all that interesting... They're accused of selling snuff films - films depicting murdering women for the sexual pleasure of men. That's pretty out there, and I would entirely support going after these guys in the same way I support going after people who make kiddie-porn. The line between porn and "obscenity" is always murky. It's easier in cases like child porn where specific laws get passed to handle a specific case. I'm a bit surprised there aren't more "snuff film" laws out there to handle these cases... It does sound like these films fall clearly into what I hope is everybodys definition of obscenity. _Am (as big a porn fan as anyone) __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  23. I had a triathlon for a few hundred jumps. It's a perfectly good canopy. It's a seven cell, which means it will sink a little quicker then a nine cell, but it was a lot of fun to fly, and good to learn on. In three hundred jumps, I remember 2 or 3 hard openings. I wouldn't buy one new, but if I found a used one where the price is right, I would consider it. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  24. That sucks... But we should be mindfull that this could have been worse. Thoughts to cajones, and prayers for a speedy recovery to Lew. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  25. Sounds smart to me. There's at least as many people here interested in tandems, as say... Wingsuits or BASE. It'd be nice to consolidate the topics. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
