  1. I tend to think of all the antivirus programs as relatively equal. That said, I've been hanging around on the internet since 1993, and for the vast majority of that time I've never had an antivirus program. I bought my first copy of Norton this year because of the litany of problems with Outlook. If I wasn't using Outlook, I STILL wouldn't have an anti-virus program. In roughly 10 years of Internet exporsure, I've never gotten a virus. The best anti-virus program? A well engaged human brain. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  2. That was the step I was missing. It never occured to me that would be pixelating things when I shrunk... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  3. OK, here is a 7 MB .psd file. It's one of mine and craicheads wedding shots. It's 1391 * 1875, 72 DPI. Document size in inches is 19.319 * 26.042. Whats the best approach to print this to 8 X 10 ? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  4. Answer to either question: Absolutely not. That is not what I signed up for. If you want me to play cop, you can have your ratings back, thank you very much. I got my rating so that I could teach newbies, not so that I would be enforcer to the skygods. I am NOT a hall monitor. THe only responsibility I take is to my student. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  5. Whats the general thought on resizing... I've got some images that I'm trying to print, and I'm only able to get good copies printed if I don't do any resizing. I can easily understand why enlarging would be a problem if you enlarge too far, but I'm actually having trouble shrinking. Whats the best approach - resize in photoshop to the paper size, then leave the printer settings unchanged, or leave the photoshop native and adjust the driver? Is there a different magic technique? I'm printing to a Epson 1280, and my shrunken images have a sort of horizontal banding under close inspection. Whats the technique for eliminating this dithering? Thanks, _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  6. Not really. The term "small business" generally does not refer to "mom and pop" shops. Small Business is typically defined as being one having between 20 and 500 employees. Additionally, an increasingly large number of Small Businesses are entirely technical - computers, software, and internet related. For example, I work for a Very Small Business - there's 5 of us, and 4 of us are technies. One marketing guy. We don't fit the "Small Business" moniker yet... hopefully soon. We're a software company, targetting the home building industry. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  7. I tried hosting skydivingmovies.com for a while.... I ended up having to put so many restrictions on its use - ie, caping bandwidth usage that it became largely useless. I doubt very much that in its current form it is a feasable product. If someone were to try to bring it back, I'd make the following recomendations. 1: enforce a small file size. You simply can not host a large collection of 100MB files and expect to keep it around. Ensure every file is highly compressed, at a reasonable resolution. 2: use p2p whenever possible. It seems like bitTorrent would be ideal. I've recomended this before. 3: ensure no copyrighted videos are hosted. Not only is this illegal, but most hosters will drop you in a heartbeat if they find out. In fact, they're required to drop you in a heartbeat under the terms of the DCMA. You may not care much about your own personal liability, but I guarantee your host does. I'd love to see skydivingmovies.com come back... But the biggest problem it has is lack of vision. A big communal "put your videos here" idea is nice when its small, but it simply doesn't scale. I don't know what the answer is, but this community is just too big to have it open like it it was. __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  8. Small business is 99 % of all employers. Small business make up for 45% of all payroll. If you exclude the mega-rich corporate CEO's, that number jumps to close to 60%. There are a hundred thousand more firms with 20>500 employees in 2003 then 2002, and another 500 thousand new firms in that size range are expected in the next 5 years. Small business continues to be the growth engine of the US Economy. They create 60-80% of the new jobs created, and currently employ 39% of the high tech workforce. With the small business growth rate being what it is, new grads will be smart to focus their job search there. http://www.clickz.com/stats/markets/smallbiz/article.php/10098_2219231 _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  9. It's true. Just this morning, I'm fresh out of the shower shaving in front of the mirror. Craichead runs in, grabs the towel from around my waist and smacks my ass, then runs out. What's a guy to do? Oh, right. Revenge. She'll get that later tonight. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  10. They'll go the same place they've mostly always gone - small business. Small business has always been the growth of the American economy, and far outpaces large business in their effects on the economy. The idea that tech workers are all toiling anonymously at huge tech conglomerates is false. Most are toiling anonymously at tiny businesses struggling to make ends meet. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  11. Generally the airlines really aren't much of a problem anymore. Get the TSA letter, it'll be the one you'll actually use. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  12. Here's what I thought to be the most pertinent part. I'm surprised you left it out. Actually, not really. As I said in another thread, when I quoted the same part... I can't possibly imagine what it would be like to have my most confidential communications with my wife dragged into court during a contract argument. That alone is the strongest argument I've seen for gay marriage - the ability to have confidential communications with your spouse. Incidentally, Rosie and Kelli have 4 children togeather, and they've been dating for over 6 years. As to their likelihood of divorce, after dating for six years I suspect it'll be much lower then most hetero couples. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  13. I always carry my rig on my back. I don't ever try to obscure it by putting it in a bag. On my latest trip it prooved to be an incredibly minor hassle, the guard didn't think they were allowed, so I showed him the TSA letter, and that was it. Well, that wasn't really it... we were in the "Super-Strip-Search-Security" line, but that decision was made because of the idiot who buoght our tickets bought one way tickets with cash, aparently... I will continue to wear my rig on my back, without a gear bag because being open, up front, and honest has so far worked well for me while traveling. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  15. I too, am in love with my wife more then I'd ever imagined I'd be. Not a day goes by that my love for craichead grows stronger. Sometimes I get really dorky and sing "you are the wind beneath my wings". I do it facetiously, but the thoughts and intents are true. Craichead, I love you. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  16. Broadcast radio and television are two very specific technologies that exist in a very otherwise impossible environment - a government sanctioned and enforced near monopoly. Given that broadcast bandwidth is very limited, I have no issues with requirements that those broadcast be in the "best interest of the people", and I'm entirely willing to leave it up to burocrats what constitutes "best interest". After all, that bandwidth is essentially owned by the people. For what its worth, I happen to feel that Stern and most of the crap carried on commercial radio should have been kicked off the public airways years ago. As far as I can tell, the only networks that even attempt to operate for the public good is NPR. Satalite, internet, and cable networks are entirely different beasts because they rarely use public spectrum. I'd be the first person objecting when HBO or Fox News get censored - they're not using public spectrum. Secondly, there wasn't actual censorhip. Clear Channel made a business choice that Stern wasn't worth the risk they were exposed to. Just as it's Sterns choice to be an ass, its Clear Channels choice not to carry them. Egads, I can't believe I just defended Clear Channel. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  17. Here's an article that just hit the AP wire - Rosie O'Donell is heading to San Francisco to marry her girlfriend and long time partner Kelli Carpenter. http://www.salon.com/ent/wire/2004/02/26/rosie/index.html Here's what I found really compelling. Rosie has just been through a really nasty lawsuit over the failure of her magazine "Rosie". Here's quoted from the article: Imagine being dragged into court, and having your most intimate conversations with your partner dragged into the record. The ability to have private conversations with your spouse is a basic fundamental right of marriage, and I can't imagine what it would be like to not have that protection. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  18. Actually, yes. Beer is usually made with by cooking whole wheat grains, among other healthy tasty pieces of goodness. It's not that nutritionally different then a bowl of oatmeal. Beer is "whole grain", rich in fiber and complex carbohydrates. The "bad" carbs are overly refined grains, such as white flour and sugar... Which don't tend to be in many beers, and when they do appear they're usually in sweetened beers like a Honey Brown. The only problem with beer is when you have 12 of them in one sitting. Thats the nutritional equivalent of having 12 bowls of oatmeal for breakfast.... That said, I don't know what Atkins says about the matter, nor do I care. Atkins is not healthy eating. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  19. I have absolutely no idea what the bible says about this, nor do I really care. If you were to tweak your question to be "what acts are more harmful then others", I would answer your question by pointing out Maslow's hierarchy of needs, among other ideas of psychology, and say that some acts hurt people more then others. I'm pretty sure Maslov's not in the bible, though. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  22. It depends on who's teaching, and how they want it done. In my coach course from hell, the instructor gave us the proviciency cards during the course, and had us work on the skills involved in the weeks and monthes following it. __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  23. It happened to me, I noticed in the plane. Actually the jump was my second birdman, and there were 5 other .com'ers on the flock. It was at Rantoul. I caught the flip during my flight-line inspection, we were on jumprun and the door was open. I think I'd already turned on my camera. I exited about 5 seconds after fixing it. I don't think having manufacturer add stiffners to the cuttaway handle will help. In my case, it wasn't a folding of the handle, but a twisting of the main-lift-web that cause the fold-under. Adding stiffners to the handle would not have helped. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  25. The lawyer works for the plaintiff, so if I'm the plaintiff, and I say "sue x", he'll sue x, and not "y" nor "z". The problems are when the lawyer doesn't work for me (hypothetically). If I bust myself up and my insurance company pays out $300,000 to fix me, they'll sue on my behalf to recover their $300,000 and there's nothing I'll be able to do to stop them. I also won't have any say in who gets named in the lawsuit, becuase the lawyer wouldn't be working for me, he'd be working for the insurance company. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
