BUAHAHAHAHAHA! WATCH THE FUCKING MOVIE!!!! HE DID INDICT THE NEWS MEDIA!!! While he only spent a few minutes talking about the NRA, his criticism of the "news media" pretty much runs the whole length of the film. For gods sake, if you're going to criticize something, know what you're talking about! _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

That could be true... Personally, I have objections to methodology. The stats as posted ignore those who voted "moderate", moderate liberal or conservative. Conincidentally, the middle is exactly where most people think they fit. IE, they ignored the majority. On a national level, over 60% of reporters answered "moderate". The results (as posted) are biased towards the extreme. All this says is that there are more extreme liberals then there are extreme conservatives. It says nothing about the overall bias, because it didn't count the middle. That makes the numbers as posted to this thread completely irrelevant. It seems like the author of this thread missed the point of the study... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

In a similar situation, I told the DZO that unless the pilot corrected his attitude, I would jump elsewhere. The pilot quickly adjusted his attitude. Dropzones are businesses, and every business has at its core customer service. DZO's who forget this are the ones who have trouble finding cash for food. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Web designer guru's or anyone I need some help
AndyMan replied to kansasskydiver's topic in The Bonfire
Do not use tables for positioning. Use CSS. Avoid using Java or Flash at all costs, whenever possible. Use CSS instead. As for the font problem, use the CSS "Font family" construct, which allows a depreciating order of fonts. Eg, "font-family: Vivaldi, Edwardian Script ITC, Blackadder ITC, Mistral;" I think the core problem is that you're relying on tables and flash, when a good CSS layout is the better approach. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. -
I agree, too. While the NRA certainly didn't come out looking good, they didn't come out looking nearly as badly as Lookheed Martin, or the Michigan militias. I actually felt sorry Dick Clark over the way he got ambushed. I'm amazed at the vitriol being spewed forth by the pro-gun lobby in response to this film, compared to the virtual silence from the other groups who got portrayed in a far worse light. I'll even go so far to say that I don't think Bowling For Columbine is actually a anti-gun movie. I think the only indictment of the gun industry it offers is more reflective of the nations attitude towards, and justification of the gun cultire. The NRA is not only secondary, its tertiary to the point. Bowling for Columbine is "about" how a country seems to spend its entirety living in fear, which I completely agree with. Hence the question I've now asked 3 times, but not gotten a response. "Have you actually seen the movie?" _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

I watch the horizon during deployment. It reduces the risk of neck pain if I get a slammer, and helps reduce entaglements with my sidemount. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
-
True, a small sidemount is not such a neck-breaker. However, adding a large heavy magnesium SLR to mix complicates things... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

I've never had a paid bust that was my fault. I was having equipment problems last year, but seem to have those nailed down. The only amateur error I've done is having the camera on full zoom. Fortunately, I made the amateur mistake... when I was an amateur, so that kind of thing was expected. I've got a pretty good routine down, and I'm pretty vigilant about not doing something really stupid. My biggest concern is my equipment problems reappearing. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Odds ofmalfunction/cutaway on first jump?
AndyMan replied to freeasabird's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It depends. Static Line, Tandem, or AFF? The best odds are definately with Tandem, and I'd put the odds probably somewhere around 1 in 5,000. With AFF, I'd put the odds probably somewhere around 1 in 1,000, and with static line I'd put the odds just slightly worse... I dunno - 1 in 800? Student rigs are usually packed by profesional packers, who often have full rigging credentials. Student rigs SHOULD malfunction at a rate much less then the population at large. This is certainly the case with tandems. With AFF and static lines, students often contribute to the malfunctions themselves, most often by deploying unstable. This is most common in static-line where students COMPLETELY hose the exit, they might find their feet or legs tangled up in lines, or worse. Additionally, simple line overs and line twists are common. AFF also has unstable students deploying, but this is fortunately pretty rare as instructors tend to do a pretty good job of keeping students stable at deployment time. Sometimes students do deploy while spinning, or go head-down at deployment time. These can cause similar minor slow-speed malfunctions. Keep in mind, everything mentioned here are slow speed malfunctions, and these are pretty easy to deal with. I wouldn't be picking a instructional method simply based on rates of malfunctions.... I hope that's not the purpose of this thread. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. -
I had thought this might be a valid point. I went to my local Blockbuster and grabbed a copy. The scene is NOT as you described. There's a shot of Heston saying "Over my cold dead hands", then a shot of the crowd, then a 10 second pan of a billboard announcing the meeting in Columbine. Zoom in on Hestons face on the billboard. Switch to coverage of the meeting. Not only was Heston wearing a different shirt and tie, he was clearly on a different stage, with a different podium, with a different backdrop, and wildly different lighting. The separation between the two clips of Heston is distinct, and I can't imagine how someone would walk away thinking it was the same convention. Not only is the scene radically different, the content is radically different, and its clearly separated by the use of the sign AND voiceover to differentiate the two. I studied film in college, and I've even made a handful of crappy documentaries. The shot of Heston doing his "cold dead hands" speech is clearly an establishing shot introducing the next segment. I've done similar things myself. It was obvious to me, it was obvious to my wife. I'm sure if my goldfish Bubbles had been paying attention, it would have been obvious to him, too. Again I've got to ask the question: Have you seen the movie? Look, Michael Moore is presenting his story. He's very upfront and honest about that. He doesn't claim to know any kind of abstract truth, nor does he claim to know every single facet of what happened at Columbine. He explains his theories and uses film to illustrate them. He's lucky that he's got the kind of soapbox available to him that he can present his opinions in a way that people will hear them. My frustration is that instead of critiquing his thoughts, everyone seems to rally around critiques that aren't even valid. Instead of arguing his thoughts, you're degrading the man. That's ad hominem, and key to my personal baloney detection. Michael Moore is an artist, and he's entitled to artistic license. If you're denying his right to use an establishing shot of "cold dead hands", then you're denying artistic license. That's ludicrous. If I was doing a documentary and If I had a shot like that, I'd use it too. It'd be stupid not to. I'd be sure to separate the establishing shot from the convention with a solid break, just like Moore did. Not only is Moore lying, apparently the Chicago Sun Times is lying too. I guess the bank must be lying, because that's what their advertisement says, too. There's guns hanging on the wall in the bank. Here's what the teller in the bank says. I'm quoting her directly: "You do the CD, we'll hand you a gun. We have a whole brochure here that you can look at. Once we do the background check and everything, it's yours to go... We have a vault, which at all times we keep at least 500 firearms.. MM: "500 of these, you have in your vault?" Bank teller: "500, in our vault." Bank teller: "we have to do a background check". MM: "at the bank here?" Bank teller: "At the bank, which we are a licensed firewarm dealer. MM: "You're a bank, and a firearm dealer?: Bank teller: "yes." MM then goes forward to fill out the forms for the background check. A cut later, another bank employee is handing him the gun. Obviously something was cut out. Here's where MM explains what was cut: http://www.michaelmoore.com/words/wackoattacko/. I'll quote it, just so don't have to go read that awful man's website: "After you see me filling out the required federal forms ("How do you spell Caucasian?") – which I am filling out here for the first time – the bank manager faxed it to the bank's main office for them to do the background check. The bank is a licensed federal arms dealer and thus can have guns on the premises and do the instant background checks (the ATF's Federal Firearms database—which includes all federally approved gun dealers—lists North Country Bank with Federal Firearms License #4-38-153-01-5C-39922)." Within 10 minutes of filling out the forms - in the bank, he walks out of the bank with the gun. One visit. The only thing prearranged was that he'd called the bank in advance asking for permission to bring cameras. So... is the bank teller lying, too? You CAN just walk into that bank, open a CD, fill out federal forms, and 10 minutes later walk out with a shiny new rifle - just as Michael Moore did, on his film. The only steps they didn't show was faxing the forms and waiting 10 minutes for the reply. They did show filling out the forms. The Chicago Sun Times said you can get the gun onsite. The Bank ads said you get the gun onsite. Michael Moore said you even get the gun onsite, and the bank teller even says that they've got at least 500 guns available ONSITE JUST FOR THAT VERY REASON. The bank is a registered firearm dealer. Are they all lying? Personally, I don't think so. I think that's a pretty compelling list of evidence. If you're going to criticise the movie, use VALID POINTS. Moore didn't lie about the bank. He did in fact walk in, and 15 minutes later walked out with a rifle. Not very peaceful, Jeffrey. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Our DZ get a huge amount of business from people who see their friends video. We've found the more videos we do, the more referals we get. My DZ also makes sure that the DZ's name, website, and phone number are prominently displayed in the "standard" leader footage that goes on every single tandem video. My DZ also offers discounts for the second tandem, and that helps tremendously in bringing people back for their second. It's during their second jump that they get pitched on the rest of the progression. Cutting video from the first jump sounds like a bad decision for all involved. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

There are some REALLY GOOD criticisms of Bowling for Columbine. You didn't hit ANY of them. I'll give you a hint. That big rocket in the background was a Titan IV rocket. If there ever was a weapon of mass destruction, that would be it. Not only was the Titan IV made in Littleton Colorado, it was designed there, too. Why would you deny that? I mean.... did you even see the movie? I'm surprised you're denying Heston said what he did. If I were a proud American gun-owner (I'm neither), I would be glad to have such an outspoken spokesman. BTW - there is no evidence - anywhere, that anyone who doesn't wear a tinfoil hat would believe, to indicated any abnormal editing on either his speech or interview. As for the bank, well - see attached: __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

We've got the 1280. While it's true that there is only one cartridge that carries six colors, they seem to do have done something right. We seem to run out of each color at roughly the same time, so there doesn't appear to be a huge cost associate with throwing out unused ink. Strangely, we've only gotten good results after turning up the saturation about 20% in photoshop before printing, but the prints really are very good quality. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Put me on the list as one who just doesn't "get" the need for firewire 800. For me, firewire 400 is more then fast enough to do a full DV25 video capture to a really fast external disk with both the camera and the disk on the same channel, and never see any bandwidth performance issues. DV25 is exactly that - 25 mb/sec, and firewire 400 is 400 mb/sec. Even allowing for a REALLy inneficient rendering app, I don't see how working with digital video would ever take us over 200 mb/sec. Anyone know what the bitrate of HDTV DV is? Anyone see the point of investing in firewire 800? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

I voted that a leader is " Someone who does what he thinks is right?", but in all honesty that is only half the equasion. The other part, is that people must follow. When people try to lead and nobody follows, we end up with characters like Don Quixote, or the whackos wearing tinfoil hats. Clearly, you can't be a leader if nobody follows you. If Bush is a leader why is the electorate in a constant and consistent state of abandonment? Bush certainly has his vision. I respect him for that. However, I fault him for not communicating that vision to the people. As Americans continue to understand exactly what he is standing for, their support for him continues to shrink. A leader must have followers. The legions following Bush are shrinking daily. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
