Today, Tennessee State law says No to Skyride!
Jewels replied to Jumpdude's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I admit to skimming the bill and not really reading it closely (let alone reviewing the full text of the bill as amended), but I note that there appears to be an exemption for telephone listings for call centers that receive reservations. I assume Skyride would latch onto that language, particularly since it would pertain to exemptions for both local telephone directories and internet listings. TPM Sister #102 -

The guy says he's had these problems at other locations . . . sounds like he's the common thread. Ewww. Might be a nice guy, but food service is not for him! TPM Sister #102

I found that when I stopped fighting the wind there was much less muscle required to fly it. I suspect that practice will help you build up your endurance, not necessarily because you're becoming stronger, but because you're flying it differently as you become more comfortable with the body position. Exercise is always good, of course, but I would suggest that you not look at it like something you need to muscle through. Just my thoughts--I'm not a coach or an instructor, but if you're flying at SVCO, I know your coach will get you where you want to be in terms of skill. TPM Sister #102

Happy, happy day! I hope it's wonderful and that you are spoiled endlessly to celebrate!

I don't think it was a mistake--and even if you don't know what the ad said, you know who it's for. There's even a whole thread devoted to it on dz.com. I think it worked. TPM Sister #102

Can you talk to the department about other ways to fill your requirements? Sometimes colleges will be flexible, especially if you have a verifiable medical condition. It's at least worth setting up an appointment to inquire. TPM Sister #102

You sound like you feel guilty about taking some time off. Skydiving is something to do for yourself and under life circumstances that make it possible. Skydiving is NOT something you should do just because someone else thinks you should. What matters is that you keep your priorities straight and keep yourself safe in the sky when you DO jump. If that means jumping when you can do it consistently and regularly, then that has to be your priority. You'll get there when you get there. TPM Sister #102

All of the actual stats aside, I think that perceived risk plays a bigger role than actual risk for a lot of people who are afraid to jump. It doesn't necessarily matter how many people actually died last year to the whuffo who is being asked to go out the door of a plane with someone who is most likely a stranger and gear that they may or may not trust. That's a big, unnatural step. I still have some door fear and right at that ready-to-go moment, I don't give a RIP about how many people died behind the wheel as opposed to how many died while jumping. All I know right then is that I wasn't made to fly and yet I'm deliberately going out anyway. TPM Sister #102

It's interesting that this issue didn't come up earlier in your season. I think it's an excellent idea to set goals and have a vision for what your team's priorities will be before you get started next year, especially if that's communicated to both parents and players early on. I don't coach (there's a shock!), but would it be possible to spend the first half of the season giving everyone equal time, and then move to a more competitive approach where you cherry pick your players as you get further along? That way the less-than-stellar players could have a significant role in the season but you could still use your stronger players when the stakes start going up. TPM Sister #102

I think you're assuming that everyone eventually comes around to the idea that winning is more important than equal participation. I don't think that's a safe assumption. That's why there are different kinds of leagues in different kinds of sports that are intentionally set up to have varying levels of competitiveness. I'm competitive in a lot of areas but, for the most part, just don't have any interest in competing athletically. If I do something athletic, I do it for fun and quite often ignore the score altogether--if I keep it in the first place. TPM Sister #102

Congratulations! That's terrific. I'm so happy for you!

In fairness, while I understand why skydivers get defensive about how skydiving is portrayed on film, often the people who show up here to ask questions are the ones who are actually trying to get it right. It doesn't mean that they always do or will portray things correctly, but asking questions is a good first step. It's the people who never ask questions at all who stand the greater risk of taking things out of the realm of reality. TPM Sister #102
