I use underscore to denote subscripts, so log_5 specifies that 5 is the subscript, just for clarity, although I'm sure you would've understood what I meant anyway. And ^ denotes power. So here goes: 2^(1/log_5 (x)) = 1/16 notice that 1/16 is actually 1/2^4 so it's actually 2^(-4) 2 raised to that mess is equal to 2 raised to the power -4, which means big mess equals -4 i.e. (1/log_5(x)) = -4 so when we invert the fraction we get log_5 (x) = -1/4 so x is 5^(-1/4) (edited to fix typos)

hmm, I was thinking more about people who need to do this for a year or so until they manage to find jobs... but if your friend does this all the time with no intention of changing it, then I agree with you, it's weird! true, but sometimes you try to have both the love of your life AND a career, and in some cases sacrificing a year might be worth it. I'm not saying one should keep the job forever and just do the long distance relationship as if it were normal. Plan to quit the job and move to wherever the partner is, but do it in a way that minimizez the negative consequences on your career. And I'm not implying it's easy. It's hard as hell. But does he stay unemployed for a long time, or does he just find a reasonably good job in the same area? For some people it's easier than for others. Depends on what job you do. I guess we have different examples in mind. I'm thinking of a couple I know where they were in the same area for a while, then his job contract came to an end (academic job - visiting position), had to find a new job, didn't find one in the same area, but found an excellent one someplace else. Wife was finishing grad studies. They were apart for 2 years, in the meantime she applied for jobs where he was, and finally got one. Now they're together and it worked out nicely. THe thing is, had she quit her studies and moved with him from the beginning, she wouldn't have gotten the job she has now. I just feel like there are situations where it makes sense to sacrifice a year or so for both partners to be happy in the many years to follow. But for some reason I was thinking of people who don't have kids yet. Kids would make this a whole lot more complicated... -

depending on what you do, it might not be as easy to find jobs in the same place immediately. These people don't wish to live in separate locations, they only do it for a limited amount of time, since their long term goal is obviously to move in together, but it is simply not as easy to achieve as one might think. think about it... if your hubby had a hot shot job in town A, and you had your hot shot job in town B, would you just leave your job instantly to move in with the SO and become a housewife for who knows how long? sometimes it takes a year or even a few years to find employment in the same area without totally compromising your career. moreover, quitting your job before actually finding a new one might ruin your career on the long term... what if it takes a year or two to actually find a new job? being unemployed all that time looks bad on your cv. karenmeal's example is an excellent one. for a couple of professors it is quite difficult to find jobs in the same place *at the same time*. in academia the ultimate goal is to get a tenure-track position and eventually get tenured so that you have the luxury of life-long job stability. what usually happens is person X gets such a position, then tries to get the partner to get a similar position at the same institution (or another one located nearby), but tenure-track positions aren't out there all the time. Maybe you need to wait for someone to retire, or the department to get extra funding, or who knows what. While searching for a job in the same town, X's partner stays employed elsewhere in order to still be a desirable candidate once the opportunity arises. -
How hard is jumping when snow is on the ground?
SuperGirl replied to mnskydiver688's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
like everyone else said, depth perception is a bit of an issue, but if there's a tree or some other object reasonably close, keeping an eye on it helps a lot with figuring out when to flare (just make sure you don't go to the other extreme now... i.e. target fixation) then again if there's a lot of snow, a rough landing won't hurt as bad (I'm assuming you're not loading your canopy too much, since you have just about as many jumps as I do) now what do you mean by a slightly smaller canopy? how much would you be loading it exactly? if your wing loading is still within recommended numbers for your experience level, it shouldn't be that big of a deal. But if you're concerned, just jump something slightly bigger for a jump or two, even if it means spending a few extra bucks. remember to dress warm. a full face helmet helps. if you wear an open face one, then a ski mask is not a bad idea. oh and if the snow is pretty thick, don't try to slide in too much on landing, your feet will likely get stuck in the snow, in which case you'll just tumble p.s. I'm a newbie, so check with someone more experienced before following my advice -
excellent. thank you!!

I need a good picture of the type of freefly jump in which 2 people are holding each other's heads... one is headdown, the other in a sit... I'm sure y'all know what I'm talking about. by the way does that type of jump have a specific name? (so I can just search for it myself) the reason why I'm looking for this is that I need to draw some stuff for a printmaking class and my assignment requires a theme with some cool symmetry to it, so that kind of jump would look great, but need to study a few examples before I start drawing

a one-second google search revealed this: http://www.thecaloriecounter.com/Foods/1400/14533/1/Food.aspx you can see the nutrition facts there how interesting: 82 calories... oh wait. serving size: 1 oz?!?! wtf? nobody drinks just 1 oz! duhhh!!

imagine when she gets old and all those boobs are really saggy... the lower pair will go down to her knees
-
I should probably shut up because I don't have that many jumps so I'm not really entitled to give any advice... but let me just state what they taught me as a student: if you go below the formation, you're supposed to keep eye contact with the others till around break-off altitude otherwise, if you track away, then you only confuse the other people in the formation, because they won't know where you are any more when it's time to break off and they risk tracking towards you

oh how beautiful... nicely done, I really like it. one thing... the shadow on her left leg looks like it could be improved a little bit, I think. I'm not sure why, it just doesn't look realistic enough to me. then again, I'm no expert, so I could be totally wrong about it.
