Tandem jumping is remarkably uniform. The safety numbers are more or less the same no matter where you go. The experience is more or less the same as well. Do a search on the drop zone locator on this site, go there and check it out for yourself. If that doesn't work, come to Skydive Delmarva (I know, shameless plug, but what the hey). Lots and lots of money. A small fortune in gear and a good airplane ( a LARGE fortune there). An airport that is both relatively close to a population center AND friendly (or at least not hostile) to jumpers. And a large landing area. That would be a good start. Prior to the modification of the exemption for tandems, yes. After that, no. The training given tandem passengers are mostly for safety purposes, not for training in furtherance of getting a skydiving license. Skydivers don't knock on Death's door. I had a guy last month. I did a series of canopy spirals. On the first one he goes "that was cool. do it again.". So, I did another one. He goes "Oh man that was wild, do another." So I do one in the opposite direction. He goes: "Yeah that was co........ urrrrrrppppp!!!!" All over my just washed gear. But he was cool and tipped $20.00. Skydivers don't knock on Death's door. I am convinced that the problem of skydiver recruitment boils down to two words: Sticker Shock. People are simply not willing to pay the price of entry into the sport. They balk at the price of lessons, balk at the price of gear, balk at having to do maintenance on gear and don't want to invest the time it takes to become proficient at it. They think their tandem rides were way cool, but will never do it again because it's too expensive. Never mind that they will quickly spend far more money to get into other things, like motorcycles and boats, they simply can't understand the enormous overhead that any sport involving aviation. The number of brothers/sisters that come to my home DZ can be counted on one hand most seasons. They are few and far between. Last summer, I took a woman for a tandem and during the canopy descent, she turned her head and said : "I just remembered, I'm black, we don't do this crazy stuff." Another one, just last week, said that her mother had scolded her that "Your asses are black, You don't do that crazy cracker shit." I saw it in Tampa one day when we were weathered out at Z-hills. I was amazaed by the detal of the disections. All the stuff I learned in anatomy/physiology was right before my eyes. Truly amazing. What I came away from ther most with was an intense curiosity about how they got some of the specimens that they came up with. Just wow. Skydivers don't knock on Death's door. Don't bother talking to whuffos about it. They will never beilive you. They will always take the word of a friend who had and uncle, who had a freind, who had a sister, who had a girlfriend, who had a mother, who had an aunt, who knew someone, who had a freind who went skydiving and this awful thing happened. The prices for first time jumpers vary by only a little bit. What do you consider a "reasonable priced" dive? Your scenario of going up in your friends plane is totally unrealistic. It is, under the right circumstances, legal, but you will spend far more to get your friends plane ready for the jump and to hire an instructor who has all the gear needed than you would if you just show up at a commercial or club drop zone.
