How about an original line set? I have one on the shelf if needed. Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

Two reasons: One, when zero'd down to a straight stitch, there is usally some zig-zag componet left. Not much, but noticable. Two, the feed assembly on a zig-zag is really wide. This makes canopy repairs a little harder to do. It is just easier with a good straight stitch machine! Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

I will be there!

Jerry, I wished I had known about the 17W15's you threw away. I have some new hooks and races here! You don't happen to have a 17W15 bobbincase do you? Back to the point at hand: The "new" 20 U machines made today are all copies! Singer has not made a machine in years. Seiko now makes most of the machines today. The 20U IMHO is not a good machine because of it's bad feeding qualities. The presser bar is mounted back too far to the rear of the feed dog. This makes starting a material feed a problem as most riggers already know. My recommendations are to find two machines. A Singer 143W2 or 143W3 for Zig-Zag work. And a Pfaff 463 or 434 for Straight Stitch work. These machines can be found on EBay every day it seems. I just saw a 143 on there for $85.00 for the head only! We charge a standard line set price for all canopies, Icarus, PD, Aerodyne, Attair, PISA, etc. This applies to sport canopies that are lined with 580 Vectran or 725 Spectra. The cost forline sets installed on nine cell canopies is $280.00 USD plus S/H. Seven cell canopies are $265.00 installed plus S/H. HMA lines are a little higher in cost and also are the Tandem line sets. In regards to HMA, we now have a Technora line that is the same size as the 580 Vectran, yet stronger at 845lbs. It is available for all canopies on the market today. The cost is a little higher than the Spectra or Vectran line sets, but they will last a lot longer. Feel free to contact me for further details. Gus, It is by the FAR's wording. Local Inspectors sometimes may see it or interpret it differently that it is worded. Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

Jerry, Gone are the days of jumping with non-TSO'd gear and the FAR's not being complied with. At one time, everyone was building rigs in their basements until a couple of manufacturer's got their gear TSO'd. The new TSO owners then squealed on the ones that did not have a TSO. That started the enforcement of the FAR's to some extent. It (FAR compliance) has been growing ever since and is not going away anytime soon. Rob, Only a master rigger or the manufacturer may install a cypres kit into a rig; i.e. make a rig Cypres ready! The TSO holder(Rig Manufacturer) and the FAA only the only ones that may dictate how and who may install the AAD. The information regarding the above is located in AC 105-2C (Paragraph 2). Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
-
Eric, If the H/C assembly already has the provisions for a specific AAD( Channels, mounts, etc), a Senior rigger can install it. The part in FAR 105 (Not AC 105-2C) is assuming the H/C has no provisions for an AAD. Further clarification is located in AC 105-2C and also in the inspector's handbook. Rob, I think it is pretty much black and white here.....! Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

You are correct in your thinking! An alteration is defined as any change from it's original configuration ( the way it came from the manufacturer) AC 105-2C Paragraph 8 From FAR 105: All components of the approved auxiliary parachute must meet all the airworthiness and performance standards as stipulated in TSO C-23. Auxiliary parachutes may be altered only as specifically authorized by the Administrator or the manufacturer (FAR § 65.129(d)). B. Examples of alterations made to the auxiliary pack include: • Addition of a deployment “diaper” • Moving of the chest strap up or down for parachutist’s comfort • Installation of an automatic activation device (AAD) So, if simply moving the same strap up or down is considered an alteration, changing the type of it would also be an alteration. You can/will notice the wear. If you have 1050 lb Lowers, they should last at least 400-500 jumps. The 750 lb about 300-400. The names of the components are: Upper Control Lines (The four That attaches to the Canopy) Lower control Lines and if you have loops instead of "Cat's Eyes" for the Brake Set, there is a third piece called the Toggle Line. Actually you can replace the grommets if needed. Another method is to "reset" the grommets with a compatable Die Set. It will sometimes come out near perfect, but not always. MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

I Need some help locating a video I saw awhile back. Looked like it was in Italy???(not Sure) From a very high mountainside........ The last to open was VERY close to a farmhouse and snow was on the ground. The video was a pretty long one and at the end has a pretty low opening of two wingsuit flyers. It had two points of reference, one from the higher jumper and one from the ground. I had it on my computer that crashed and want to replace it! Making a velcro rig free flyable??
masterrigger1 replied to rideclimbfall's topic in Gear and Rigging
We have done it in the past. The problem is that we have to apply for a field approval and wait for the paperwork to come back from the FSDO for each and every container. It actually is a good mod, but probably not worth the effort now! BS, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com -
I believe if you go back through the threads you will find that I tried to convince them that Dynema lines were the wrong line material to use on that canopy. I believe the quote was "right canopy- wrong lines" Thank goodness they came around on this! It is better for everyone!
-
Dima, That all depends on where it came from and if it is UV coated or not. Also depends on the carrier and fiber count which we will not get into here. PD is getting their line material(Technora) from abroad. I have heard from some Braidworks people in South Africa. A few of their R&D people are from South Africa, so it would make some sense there. The line material that we use is coated and we quote 700 jumps for the 340lb. (Comp line) to 1200 jumps with the 700lb stuff. I do not know the recommendations from PD on their line sets. Rule of thumb here is, the larger the braid equals a greater number of jumps. Guessing,( I stress the word "guessing" here!) I would expect at least 500-600 jumps out of them.
