Why do you not add the same 5 cm to the span as well? I want to keep the span the same as I do not want the canopy to be more open spanwise. If you increase the span, on most canopies the effect is faster openings. It would be just like leaving the slider down an inch or so from the slider stops, thus giving the span of the canopy less curvature. *** The span, being greater than the chord, will have more shrink due to the sewing, won't it? So shouldn't it have some extra so that it too ends up at the correct measurement? *** Sewing shrikage is the same per inch any way you go. Just add 4-5 cm to the oringinal raw cut and the finished product will be bigger in the same direction and amount that you made the raw cut larger. It's not really about making it square. It is more like flatting out the chordwise curvature when the slider is at the slider stops just a little. Basically, it gets the nose opening out of the "direct" airstream just a bit... BS, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

That's correct. I do add about 4-5 cm to the chord if building a new one though. Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

You would be looking for Tim Tennant. I am 2.5 hours away but will be out of the shop all of October, BS, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

Anvil, First, feel free to contact me regarding your issues. Second, there is probably more bad info than good in this thread. With your size, experimenting with your canopy could be deadly...period. Sparky's recommendation of the correct slider is in order. Try only that first. Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

Yes, we do! We also have line sets for them. Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

Sometimes a person will simply tie a knot above the previous knot to shorten the closing loop also. We are coming up on cooler weather which means that the closing loops will need to be made a little longer. (low humidity) Untrying two knots is double the effort to lengthen or shorten the loops IMHO. BS, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

*** The Batwing is a Stiletto copy. *** Lisa, Actually, it is the other way around. The Stilleto came out well after the Batwing. You are correct about the openings being squirrely though. Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

You get better results using a hot knife, but a lighter will work. You can buy a cheap 40 watt soldering iron, file the tip/blade to a narrow/sharp point, and have a good knife for less than $20. Also, cutting on a glass top gives you better results. BS, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

Howard Adams would be the guy to ask. He built them. I do not have a contact number for him, but maybe someone here would know how to reach him. Last I heard, he was still in Florida..... MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

Ditto on everything that has been said so for. The -34 not only has a smaller bobbin, but also a smaller hook assembly. The -34 , -6, and -9 have the same smaller assembly designed to do lighter work than the -31 or -33. Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

Mark, from page 3 of the PTS........ The applicant should be prepared tp demonstarte ability in all TASKs included in the AREAS OF OPERATION appropriate to the ratings and/or rating(s) sought. In other words, the DPRE must select the right task from the PTS for the rating sought. The task that you posted is atask for a Master's certificate..... MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
-
Sure it does... Look at the works "has knowledge of...." versus "Demonstrates" that is in each area of operation. The senior rigger only has to have knowledge of a seam construction and a master rigger has to demonstrate the ability. BS, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
-
Lee, It is not whay the rigger can do, it is what he/she is certified to do. As per the PTS, we only test a senior rigger for a patch without seams. So that is all that the rigger is allowed to do unless supervised, or they upgrade their certificate to a Master rating. Just for clarity, a master rigger candiate is tested with several repair jobs wih seams included. Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

Bill Wood's Funeral Boogie
masterrigger1 replied to masterrigger1's topic in Events & Places to Jump
Bill Wood (former Top POP) is having a Living Funeral Boogie in Honea Path, SC August 21, 2010. He has terminal cancer and wants one more get-together with his jumping friends BEFORE he passes! He is making his grand entrance in a hearse (front seat hopefully). Contact me for more details and yes we will be jumping.... BS, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com -
Patches that incorporate a seam are considered major repairs. The required repairman is a master rigger or someone under the supervision of one. BS, MEL edited for lack of brain power today! Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

If you were using the seat the seat has a drogue (actually two) that will: 1. slow you down to safe deployment speed 2.Be used to seperateyou from the seat Well it all depends on how the service manual is written. This service manual is written/developed by the owner and mechanic and then approved by the FAA at the overseeing FSDO. The seats can be certified up to five years while the parachutes can be certified to 3 years. Sequencing of the seat and parachute will slow the deployment speeds to around 200 knots before deployment. Certified speed is somewhat different than cruise speeds. In the L-39, you would be cruising at probably 350 knots or faster. Funny, I just had a room full of the "guys" here talking about this stuff..yep...just talking like you stated. Anyway, I am just waiting on one of these newly manufactured parachutes to be used in real life. My bet is that the guy never makes it out of the aircraft in the first place! BS, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

I kow for fact that if the senior rigger is doing the sign off alone, it's not a legal packjob. ....even if it is just the parachute not the complete seat. But it still is a 450 knot plus aircraft which well exceeds the maxium deployment speed. MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

I was just having some fun with you this AM....trying to forget the fact that it is Friday the 13th AND I am undergoing a FAA survelliance today here at the shop today. Cheers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
-
Actually, They are not legal as the parachutes are not certified to the speed of the aircraft. This is why there are several different sequences odf deployments that the original parachute can go through, depending on the senerio. I must be insane then! But, the British Air Ministry gave me a letter of authorization to receive Pyro over here for the Martin Baker seats. So I quess that makes me "certified" insane. Go to microsoft.com and download the malware stuff they have. Then down load Microsoft Essentials. It's free and works great! MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com -
Yes, I do them. I have done some work for Don Kirlin and others around. I got my start doing Martin Bakers in the Folland GNat and British Provost Jets. You need to work with someone that has some experience with these things as they are somewhat complicated. Also of note, you as a rigger, do not sign them off, the A&P does that. The parachutes do not carry a TSO and are packed as per the service inspection that has been signed off by the FAA. Most of these operate under "Exibition Experimental".
