Letting that student get away was the product of two things: not "dressing for success", and not staying close enough to the student to stop the problem before she got away from them. I don't see BOC versus ripcord/spring-loaded PC as the issue here. I also don't see any reason why deploying at the correct altitude while spinning is a bad idea. The three pull priorities ALWAYS remain the same: Pull, Pull at the correct altitude, pull at the correct altitude with stability. I am wondering if the instructors had this student do both vertical and horizontal dive flows, including live throws of the pilot chute. As was earlier stated: it only takes a few seconds to re-stow the PC. Bill is also correct in stating that the correct thing to do for students who have rigs hanging down off their ass is to give them properly fitting gear. One size does definitely not fit all. I think DaGimp might be in Arizona already as well, but I forget when he said he was arriving. MonkeyLip is on the premesis full-time now and Ass Monkey is on patrol out there doing some type of menial labor. -
Who would choose skydiving as a career?
SkymonkeyONE replied to SpeedDog's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I am a full-time, professional skydiver/instructor. I don't make a lot of money doing it, but then again I don't have to; I served 21 years in the army and I have a pension. I am still young enough that my body can take full-time (when I feel like it) meat hauling and AFF, but old and wise enough to know that without some supplemental income, 99.9 percent of full-time skydivers lead a meager existence. Does this mean that they are unhappy? Some people absolutely love the simple, gypsy-like existence, but others tire of it fairly quickly and eventually skulk off into the distance. Chuck -
Canopy control course in Florida ???
SkymonkeyONE replied to freeatlast's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I would bag on the hotel idea and just stay in Rob Herrick's team house. He owns two houses, right across the street from each other and one is set up specifically to lodge visiting teams and individual skydivers. PM me for his number if you like. Chuck -
So, do you have a suit to jump in the interim?

Worst sounding concert I ever attended was Blue Oyster Cult. They sounded nothing like any of their recorded music.

It doesn't look like I personally have answered, but yes, I am definitely going to be there and Katie will be there for at least part of it. Peace, Chuck

Tom, I wish it was that way in practice, but I have seen the two page card as, simply, a way for seven-level schools to finger whip A-licenses. As a school manager I saw more than a handful of examples where visiting/transfering students clearly hadn't performed many of the tasks on even the 2-page card. The four-page card lays it out for you in a common-sense manner and makes it very hard for a person to "skip" some rudimentary, but very-important, basic skydiving tasks. I don't buy any of the reasons why other schools don't use that four-page card. Chuck Blue D-12501 AFF/SL/TM-I, BMCI, PRO, S&TA

Exactly. Tack it down, put a rubber band around it, or maybe even put some velcro on it. Like Lisa said, though: you ought to check/tighten every one of your straps before you exit.

Actually, I can't think of many places off the top of my head that won't let a licensed 16 year old skydive. Smartest business, though, is to simply not offer up your age when you sign a waiver at whatever dropzone you visit. It's my opinion that your license is in effect your emancipation when it comes to whether or not you ought to be able to jump somewhere. Others in this litigious society will argue, but I am not one of the nay-sayers. Chuck

Personally, I thought the portable shower/bathroom units were outstanding last year. I never, ever ran out of hot water. Hopefully, the permanent structure will be able to keep up. How long till we are all there again? Chuck

My only problem, ever, in winter jumping is my hands. I loathe the pain at and after pull-time. That said, I don't feel any difference at the end of the dive between "regular" freefall and wingsuit flight. I never, ever jump in gloves heavier than nomex flight gloves because I cannot stand to be without "feel." Chuck

Scariest Bm Jump ever and definitely something to think about
SkymonkeyONE replied to Rdutch's topic in Wing Suit Flying
Wow, that's nuts, Ray. Not sure how many of the rest of you have dealt with a leg-zipper blowout, but I have. All I had to do to keep straight was keep my toes pointed. Having your LQRS come undone is something entirely different though. What I would do in that instance is cross my legs to collapse the wings, then dump. I would say that this guy is VERY lucky. First jump course review here: Your pull priorities are ALWAYS, no matter what kind of skydive you are on are- -pull -pull AT THE CORRECT ALTITUDE -pull at the correct altitude with stability Chuck -
