Profits At Largest 500 Corporations Grew By 81 Percent In 2010
DougH replied to dreamdancer's topic in Speakers Corner
So lets tax them to the ground, tax those huge public oil companies too! They aren't owned by state pensions, individuals who count on their 401k's for retirement, etc etc. And they won't decide to just locate further and further overseas, they are stuck in in the US with no oppertunity to further pull out of the US. Any other great solutions? "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P -

Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz wrong. They "aren't paying taxes", but more accurately their effective tax rates are pretty low, because the tax code is currently structured in a manner that favors global multinational corporations. Fortune 500 companies are typically multinationals. It has very little to do with charitable contributions, which can only be 10% of a corporations net taxable income any way. Simplifying the corporate tax code to favor primarily US based companies, say CVS, and reducing the top rate from 35% to 20% would be excellent for some companies, and absolute crap for others. I am not complaigning, tax accounting pays my bills. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P -

Yes you are correct and yes they are But the reasons markets are more profitable over seas are varied from growth potential to other reasons But the reasons markets are less profitable here can be directly linked to regulation It can be linked to a multitude of different things. Covering each element would take a post all by itself. Do you think doing business in China has less red tape and regulation than doing business in the US. The Chinese may take you intellectual capital and claim your business for the government, but they sure have a great cheap supply of skilled highly educated labor. Fortune 500 companies are increasingly global. They aren't US companies any more. Their profits are up because they are growing over seas. Outside markets are offering a better potential for growth. Do you have a simple solution for the fact that business will seek out the most profitable oppertunities? At least my 401k has been doing well the past two years. I get a voice mail a day and several emails a day trying to place me in a tax accountant position at this or that company. Most of the voicemails say that we have spoken in the past, when in fact we haven't. It is a volume game, the recruiters cold call as many people as possible to get as many possible applicants to increase there chances of getting their placement fee. I am polite and usually take a few minutes to hear them out and tell them to keep me in mind for future positions. You never know when the cold caller will become a HR VP in some company you WANT to work for. They may not remember that you politely fielded there calls a few years back, but they will probably remember if you were rude on the phone, or blasted them with some jerky email. So how much money are is the prosecution spending on this trial, and the impending re-trial of Barry Bonds. The courts don't run on happy thoughts and puppy farts. Every trial costs dinero, seems like a pretty big waste of resources! "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

That is interesting, I never heard that before, but I don't regularly study bats. Are they missing to sonar signature and crashing into them. I don't see this as a reason to kill wind turbines but it would be a problem that needs to be looked into more detail if a windfarm was on a migration path and was taking out a large precentage of migrating bats. That could be more of a problem that local tree kills. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

I don't disagree, I worked for DOD for a little while before going back to college. There was some great managers, and some really chitty ones. Same here in corporate amerika. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

The oil was already flowing. Seems to me that the embargos, and now the pending civil war is the biggest impedement to oil production in Libya. In comparison, the West could have stood by and let the status quo kill a bunch of brown people all by themselves and enjoyed only a brief interuption in oil supply. Seems you just shot down your own argument. And which argument would that be Professor? If you read what I said within the context of the post it should be clear that I posted what is quoted above in response to Amazon's claim that concealed carry holders would turn a situation into the wild wild west where every one is gunning each other down. That obviously is not that case. The Laughner shooting proves that while CCW holders are not a SWAT team that can solve every situation they are responsible citizens that can exercise sounds judgement and restraint. The only thing that I think is apparent is that certain posters here would rather degrade the conversation to the level of personal attacks then anwser each others questions and have a constructive exchange of ideas. I don't know if that is just because of the atmosphere of the speakers corner, or if it is a reflection on certain posters social skills!

Can you back that up with quotes that prove that any of us are advocating for a completely unregulated gun industry. Here in CT there is background check and a wait period for long guns. Not unregulated. There is also a pistol permit required to purchase handguns, which requires training, fingerprinting, a complete background check. Not unregulated. It takes up to 8 weeks to get the permit, and it isn't a free process either. I have no problem with either of these measure in the state, except for the revenue generating part of the pistol permit. How do you suggest regulating the industry? The ATF handbook on Federal gun laws and regulations is the size of an average college text book. If we can keep adding laws maybe we can make it compete with the tax code... now the books at my desk for the federal tax regulations is 8 volumes deep... very eficient!!! Compared to a lecture hall of unarmed students that just had to wait for Cho to take their lives? I would rather take my chance with a group of "probably untrained idiots" than be in a group of defenseless individuals. Especially in my state since at least my "probably untrained idiots" would have had to receive some base training including live fire to get their CCW permits. Most CCW permit holders get to the gun range way more on average than our police officers in this country that only have to qualify on occasion but don't have to go to the range reguarly. Don't you mean the targets are rocket launch sites that have been placed strategically to use women and children as human shields. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

None of them unless they point a gun at me. Same thing as if I come across some one who looks like a bum shooting at a guy in a fancy suit. I am going to take cover and call the police. How do I know who is the bad guy in this situation? There were concealed carry holders at the Arizona shooting. They didn't stop Laughner but they didn't shoot up the crowd or each other either. Lets change your question to something more representative of what went down. You heard there was a shooting in a campus dorm earlier that morning. You are in a lecture hall and an armed gunman comes in and starts shooting people. Your four gunman scenario is a Strawman! "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
