Since you only have 21 jumps, I'm not sure that we should be having a discussion of a separated recording system...it's dangerous when you're a pro, let alone a newbie. For iceclimbing, I'd imagine that all snag points can be eliminated, but do you really want your helmet tethered to your body? Creating a cutaway for a camera or helmet is fairly easy, but bear in mind that a helmet or camera cutaway won't help if the camera is tethered to a belt or body pack being used for recording unless you build a quick release into the cable, and know that the quick release will have integrity until you cut it away. That's the harder part, IMO. You need a MUCH wider focal length if you're going to use this for climbing, unless you don't mind extreme closeups of rocks.

OK, it's not a POV camera, it's a POS camera.

now here is a post every one can learn from. -
SEARCH in the upper right corner can be your friend. It's a low end camera with poor optics recording to MPEG 4 (which in and of itself isn't a problem, but feed garbage to a highly compressed format, and the garbage only gets worse). This camera has horrible dynamic range, and will exhibit rolling shutter artifacts at any shutter speed faster than 1/120. It has a 4.5mm focal, which is approx the same as a 37mm width compared to a 35mm camera value/focal length. Too narrow for such a small POV cam, IMO. In short, it's great for shooting buddies during a freefly if they're not too close. You wouldn't want to use this for tandems. MP4 isn't easy to edit unless you've got a very fast, very current computer. HTH

You can't go wrong with a Bonehead or Tonfly, IMO. Having both... I think the finish is more durable on the Bonehead. My wingsuit helmet is the Bonehead Mindwarp, and my wingsuit camera helmet is a Tonfly Diablo (same finish as the Nino). The Mindwarp will stay looking good even after being dropped on the ground, bumping door frames, etc for quite a while. The Tonfly will continue protecting your head, but you'll likely end up putting a lot of stickers on it to cover "oops." FWIW, I'll forever be in Bonehead's debt. One of my very early jumps, I had a premature deployment on my rig. My head met the side of the aircraft very forcefully, enough to score the side of the helmet and leave permanent paint chips from the plane embedded in it. Coulda been my head. I don't know how a cheaper helmet may have managed that impact. Probably just fine but "no shit...there I was."

Because you tok off without getting a photo of me in the slot. If you'd only have waited til breakoff, everyone would get to see my ass in the midst of coolness and organization. Seriously, can't wait to fly w/you again, just picked up a POV helmet for WS flying. Hopefully I'll be able to figure out what I'm doing wrong (and right) from watching.

Don't know BF, but weight has gone down to 193, started at 207. 30 mins at the gym 3 times a week, cut out cereal in the a.m. and eating a very small lunch and small dinner before 7, nothing but water after 7. Seems to be working, except I get really hungry around midnight, so should probably hit bed earlier? Thanks for the pushes.

The Waycool and the Royal are about 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. At that width, no lens is "good." The focal length of the HC96 is approx equivalent to a 36mm length on a 35mm cam, so adding an .0175 or .2 to the lens is going to be damned wide, like about a 6mm lens on a 35mm cam. Be sure you order a thread size of 30mm on that...and if you might be changing cameras anytime soon, order a 37mm thread, and then downsize with a stepup ring. Make sense? I don't have a Waycool, I've only seen one. Grant was going to send me one for a comparison I did about a year ago between different lenses, but it never arrived. I do own two of the Royal, and they're plenty good, very high resolution at the center, bu the color starts to slide pretty quickly as you'd expect on such a wide, single element lense.

thanks to the electoral college, it's arguable that your vote is a waste of time, so it makes sense the primary is a waste of money. All the convoluted rules seem to be about discouraging the voters, or assuring that on the whole, individual votes don't matter. Russia has a more direct elective process than the US does, and democracy is new to them.

I never woulda thought of this. Very much appreciate the heads-up. I do check my cables during ride to altitude on every jump; it's part of my checkout procedure. But have never thought once about handles once out of the aircraft, and I've had a few good bumps on exit.
-
yeah, well...i was sliding up right behind your fat ass, you're just lucky it was time to break off, or you'd have had a Bonehead in your butt. I'm still struggling with the brakes. C'mon, cut me some slack, I was in the slot for at least 3 seconds. It's not my fault the photographer had already moved on...I was there. Really, I was. Speaking of..

Doesn't matter what the subject is, a .0175 is currently the widest lens available for small format camcorders. Add that to a very wide camcorder, ie; CX7 or similar, you can get a full body shot on a wristmount. Waycool and Royal both offer the uberwides.
-
As mentioned above. When i have both my CX7's back, I'll letcha know. I suspect it's not a problem, but not sure. However...you're going to HAVE to have a computer to store this with. Until a device is created that can dump from a card straight to a disc over USB or Firewire...you'll need a computer. Join the new century, get a laptop for the DZ.

yes, and they've asked for more, but they'll need to give me a budget first. Did I mention we purchased four of these cams? They are the bomb. I flew it at Mesquite, too. The background there simply isn't good for this level of cam, coupled with the jumpsuits that were worn, but we were just dicking around, not looking for awesome footage. I wish like hell I'd had you or Scott wear this cam for the flocks. The angle is wide enough that he might have even caught a shot of me finally sliding in. Schneider has just announced a wide for this cam, but I don't think it's necessary at all. It's only a .7 anyway, so for the added weight...screw it, IMO. I'm probably going to figure out a neoprene cover for this, but of course, it's only a special-shoots camera for us so likely won't need it. Had hoped to shoot w/it at PR and Empuria I could rant on and on about this cam...damn I love it. BTW, for those into this geeky shit...I'll have a few passes for NAB and the conference sessions. They'll be first come, first served. The conference session passes are worth $1900.00 and include full floor access to the NAB show in Las Vegas. http://www.nab.org if you want to attend. Don't you DARE think about asking for a pass if you're not 110% sure you're going to attend.

I'll settle for a spoonful of RockyRoad. I'm trying to get as slim and sexy as Scott Callantine so I can fly my wing better.
-
At Eloy. Any bird people going? Feb 15/17? they're doing night jumps, too. Hoping to meet up with someone who can coach me a bit.

Some NLE's can write back to the AVCHD camcorders, others can't. Depends on how the NLE writes the stream. I haven't yet attempted to copy from one CX7 to another over USB, both of my CX7's are out on loan for manufacturers designing accessory components. Wait'll you see what's coming Anyway...you'd still be able to grab footage, because it's just a USB transfer from the cam/card to the computer no different than CF card to computer, except it's a different card. Most card readers have memstick readers in them too. I'm *pretty* sure that doing a file to file Xfer from cam to cam will work, however, because there is no NLE involved messing with the header file. Does that make sense?

Yes, I have. it made me ill. Literally. We have a 16' screen with HDMI projector. We watched 720p on the screen. There is something *REALLY* wrong with seeing wingsuits from a standing angle, and it left all three of us (we were standing) a little queasy. Our bodies are standing, but our eyes are looking down. It's not right. Once we sat down, it was fine, but everyone we've shown this to since responds with "Oh my god, it's like you're flying right there." BTW, you owe beer, y'know. You'll forever hold the honor of being the first in the world to fly an XDCAM EX. I'm the second. Do I get any special Monkey honors for that?

Just to add one more component to that....every inch of thread is tested as well, prior to being allowed onto the cutting room floor. Again...Bill Coe designed a unit that tests every inch of thread, placing in a stress test before winding onto the spools that ultimately end up on a sewing machine.

Nope. Not one of them. Polygamy falls into a different category. Utah has a high number of internet connections (highest per capita in the USA according to Utah C of C, but sixth according to Forbes). 68% of the state uses computers in their homes vs 46% of the rest of the USA on average. About half of their busts are stings where the arrestee thinks he's chatting with 13 y/o boys/girls and arranges to meet the "child" somewhere, often parking lots or near amusement establishment. Lures of drugs, alcohol, or money are often involved. Many of the remainder are busted for either authoring or trafficking in child pornography. In the case of CleanFlicks, allegedly there will be charges next week of possession of child pornography, whereas in the Gale case, Gale was shooting and selling the photos. Thus far, every person connected to Gale's sales are members of the LDS faith. Gale was a very highly ranked leader in the LDS faith, being the approximation of a Bishop in the Catholic Church (a "Stake President" in the LDS Church) overseeing several wards, or a diocese of many congregations. Given that roughly 48% of the state of Utah is active in the LDS faith, and the church claims approximately 70% of the residents are or have been members, makes that number fairly skewed, given the percentages of arrests vs population, but it still shows a pattern. And it happens in the surrounding states that have high LDS populations. Jokes about pedophilia have *always* been common fare on some radio talk shows, and it's not related to polygamy at all. According to the AG, another reason so many arrests are surfacing is that the leadership of the LDS faith no longer tolerates the shielding of sexual predators, as they did until very recently. I freely admit a lack of objectivity on the subject. There isn't a week that goes by that we don't see a ranking member of the LDS faith arrested for some sexual misconduct with a minor. It's hard to remain objective when it's all around, reported almost daily. I hope I never become numb to it.

If on the ballot how would you vote?

And therein lies part of the heart of the problem. -
And that's what's most important, is who you feel takes the best care of you, and will offer you the best experience for the $$ you're spending with them.
-
I do admit a certain prejudice for pedophilia being common amongst the LDS culture, but that's only because it is. Please identify any state in the past 24 months that has had the number of child porn, minor-age sexual abuses that Utah has recently had. You won't be able to. We interviewed Mark Shurtleff's Crimes Against Children team recently, and learned that Utah has the highest arrest and conviction rate in these two areas, and the vast majority of those arrested are active members of the LDS church. Does that mean that all LDS people have a proclivity for sexual abuse of children? Of course not. No more than being a Catholic priest increases the likelihood of abusing little boys. But there is a pattern here, and it's quite disturbing. According to the director of the Crimes Against Children, it's not that there are more child molesters in Utah, it's that they're dumber and easier to catch. This one, i take particular interest in because I know the perpetrator very well, and have engaged in several debates with him about the legality and morality of his business actions. It's entirely coincidence that a former business partner of his has also been arrested and convicted of sexual abuse of a minor, but it's entirely worth of mention, because they were business partners, and both extremely outspoken defenders of the family values that they were perpetuating by offering cleaned up movies.

You're referring to ClearPlay, which is different. ClearPlay has not finished their legal appearances. ClearPlay does not alter the physical media nor the actual content of the disc in any way, so it's a different technology than physically removing parts of the movie. I honestly don't know how anyone can watch a ClearPlay'd movie. Jerky, jumpy...and you can easily lose the plot line in really busy action films but hey...they will turn an "R" rated film into a "G" rated film with a simple download. Legality is still to be decided. Adobe and Apple were initially part of the lawsuit because at the time, their technology, coupled with certain hardware and software, made ripping movies very easy. They were quickly released from the original complaint, however. I suspect the main reason they were enjoined was that one of Thompson's people had created a tutorial on how to rip/edit movies to remove objectionable content. I have a print of it around here somewhere, but can't find it on the web using Google.

The Phantom is a sweet cam, but impractical to use. Expect most pro cams to have phantom-like features over the next coupla years. This clip was shot with the Phantom and 2 litePanels (discussed in another thread). Yeah...a Phantom in freefall shooting a deployment!
